The empire that I had researched was the Ottoman empire which is now most commonly referred to as Turkey. The leader from the Ottoman Empire that I researched was Orhan Gazi. Orhan Gazi was born in 1281 in Sogut town, ascended to the throne in 1324, and died in Bursa in 1360. The icon I chose to research was queen Liliʻuokalani. I chose her because she was an advocate for her people and, just like Orhan, put them as her first priority. The Hawaiian leadership terms that I chose for Orhan Gazi was Heʻōpu aliʻi (generous), Balance nā akau (many perspectives), and i aliʻi ke aliʻi ke kanaka (the chief is chief because of the people. I chose generosity because he would often give his own possessions to those who were less fortunate. I choice balance nā akau because, during his free time, Gazi would go out into the street and talk to the people he served. He wanted to know their experiences first hand, understand their struggles, and what he could do to better himself as a leader. The last trait I chose was i aliʻi ke aliʻi ke kanaka because, with Gaziʻs frequent interaction with the people he served, we can tell that he understood his place. He understood the power he had but also why he had it and who gave it to him. He, just like queen Liliʻuokalani, never took advantage of their power for their personal need but only used it for their people.

The Empire I was assigned to research was the Safavid Empire, which is located in Iran. The leader I chose to represent the Safavid Empire was Shah Abbas I because he was also known as “the great”. Abbas I was the 5th shah (leader) of Iran and one of the leaders who impacted the most by strengthening the economy. Abbas was the one who established the global trade links between Asia and Europe. He was born in 1571 and then later died in 1629. The Hawaiian leader I had chosen was Haunani K. Trask. She was born in 1949 and is still alive today. Haunani was a graduate of Kamehameha schools and is a Native Hawaiian activist who is a documentarist and writer. The Hawaiian leadership terms I had chosen to represent them were Naʻauao, Kūlia I Ka Nuʻu and Koa. These terms represent them because it shows how strong of a leader they were. They never backed down and always got stuff done. Now the english leadership traits I had chosen were Vision, Dedication and Perseverance.

Malina:
The empire I was assigned to was the Russian Empire. The leader I chose was Catherine the first. Her real name is Yekaterina Alekseyvna or Marta Skowronsk. She was born on April 5 1684 and passed on May 17 1727. She was crowned empress of Russia on May 18, 1724 and reigned till 1727. Second wife of Peter 1 the Great who reigned in 1682-1725 and was also a peasant woman of Baltic. The Hawaiian leader I chose was Princess Pauahi Bishop. Born on December 19, 1831 and passed on October 16, 1884. She is the daughter of Abner Pākī and Laura Kōnia Pākī and is the great granddaughter of Kamehameha the Great and later inherited land from him and her cousin Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani. Her estate has 317,500 acres of land assessed at about $474,000. As of June 30, 2014 Her estate is about $11.0 Billion. I chose to honor these two women because they are both very powerful and I appreciate seeing women take over the throne and rule. Catherine and Princess Pauahi were very loved by their people.

The empire that I researched about was the Mayan empire. Yikʻin Chan Kʻawiil, Tikal’s most successful ruler, was the leader I chose to research about. He was named the 27th ruler of Tikal, reigning from A.D 734-751. He was known to be a very powerful and successful ruler because he followed after his father’s footsteps. He was also known to be a successful leader because he was able to win many battles and take over many lands for his people. The icon I chose to represent him was a symbol that represents his father who was also once a ruler. I chose this icon because his father was one of the many reasons he was a good leader. The Hawaiian leadership I chose was Kumu Hina Wong-Kalu, who once said, I am Hawaiian first. The icon I chose for her was an ipu, because she is a well known hula dancer who teaches many other people today. The leadership qualities I chose poʻokela, Kuleana, Paʻahana, Dedication, Creativity, and vision. All of the qualities are exemplified by both of these leaders.
