Applying Revolutions
The Dutch Republic is located in the present kingdom of the Netherlands. The global reach of this empire is they began following Portugal and Spain. In company with Britain, they were able to continue colonising on an indirect state, mainly with the Dutch East India Company. Natural gas and petroleum are both key resources. One constraint was the differences between being Dutch and Belgium. Over time, due to the fact that there were so much human interventions and natural disasters, their coastline has changed. “God created the world but the Dutch created the Neatherlandʻs”.
The result of the trade was insurance and retirement funds. They traded with modern Europe, mostly Amsterdam. Ever since the 1980ʻs, they have had an open and flourishing economy. Because Dutch made the smart decision of using itʻs favorable agricultural base, they were able to have more success in the fishing industry and the “North sea carrying trade” during both the 15th and 16th century. Which allowed them to prosper through the 17th century with their empire.
The reason why our group is passionate about engaging with the problem of “Life on Land”, is due to the fact that it is something we will have to face in the future. Therefore, we should take care of it now. This issue appears in our empire because the Netherlands has a high crime rate. They were listed as #14 for ”intentional homicide rate”.Itʻs beginning to appear in Hawaii. There are alot more news reports dealing with these new issues. Violent crimes has been a lot more common on the islands, and homelessness is slowly getting worse. And the worst thing about this is that the government officials have no idea how to stop these things from progressing.

The French Revolution:
The criteria that sets up a revolution, are poor government, upset and mistreated citizens. The citizens that get mistreated realize that they want to be treated with respect and decide to attack and stand up against the government. Being treated unfairly and poorly can cause citizens to revolt. This includes, being overworked, lack of food/resources, misuse of land and many other things. All citizens want fair opportunity to love the best life that they can.
We believe that revolution is seen today in modernized America and Hawaiʻi. There are people who are not satisfied nor happy with some of the leadership that is seen here in Hawaiʻi. in our opinion, we believe that some of our government could be better by listening to the people . This is due to the fact that some of the actions done by them are almost as if they just arenʻt listening to us. However, something that is positive about our people is that we can use our voice and never get violent. Kapu aloha always!
Because of the unfortunate event of the overthrow in January 17th 1893, we as a lāhui along with our government have been continuously working to get back what is ours. We think that working to obtain back our land and restoring the life back on it, is what helps us as a nation. One major issue that holds us back is that most of our everyday necessities come from the barge. If we were to put more time and learn how to sustain ourselves with the resources we already have, we would have a much better connection to our land.

Expansion Concepts
After reflecting upon the given concepts, my group and I believe that exploration globally impacted colonization for our Kahiau project topic, “Life On Land”. The most major concept that is affecting “Life on Land” is Colonization. When you search up the effects of colonization you find drastic changes made to the environment. From the Sustainable Development goals, goal 15: sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss. The effects of colonization include deforestation and depletion of nutrients from soil that halt the growth of native plants and introduce foreign plants and animal species. The way that our concept colonization reflects on our modernized Hawaiʻi is the way that everything has changed today. From early on Hawaiʻi, till now many things have been shaped and changed. In modern America we see how much everything is developed, including Hawaiʻi. We see these impacts in our everyday lives from the clothes we wear to the materials we use.
Theoretically, as mentioned earlier if Hawaiʻi were still a independent nation we would be able to focus more of our attention on such issue. We believe that our government could continue supporting and non profits, groups and the events they host to give back to the land. After all the land is what takes care of us, therefore we should take care of it. Some solutions that our government and our community could help reinforce would be

- listen to their peoples opinions and point of view
- Have trust and make relationships with their community.
- Continue to provide attention and support for our needs
- Bring back the ways of our kūpuna
Enlightenment, Industrialization, Colonization and Imperialism
Our topic for our Kahiau project is life on land, which basically deals with nature, and philosophy deals with the nature of knowledge. So unfortunately this is the only similar aspect of this topic. However, Francis Baconʻs contribution of experimenting and obtaining knowledge is similar to our concept of taking care of the land we live on, and learning new things about it everyday! Another philosopher who came to close to our topic would be Baruch Spinoza. He would use his “ethical vision to unfold a monistic metaphysics in which God and Nature are identified”.
The two biggest Industrial Revolution results that impacted our Kahiau Project were increase of production and inexpensive materials. Due to the increase of production rate workers were on higher demand and because of the wage levels decreased. That combination caused many people to suffer and only certain few to prosper. Because of the inexpensive materials, company owners gained more profit while the workers suffered. And because of that many people went into poverty because of the wage drop that they experienced. This is similar to the concept of poverty, which could lead to low

One propelling factor that occurred during the Era of Expansion, Exchange, and Colonization would be the American colonists who came to Hawaiʻi and took over our cash crops Sugar, pineapples, etc. were all cash crops of Hawaiʻi. When the colonists came here they found that sugarcane thrived in our island conditions and they made an industry out of it. Our topic is Life on Land which connects to the cash crops because so much land is taken up by it. In these modern times, theyʻve cut down the sugarcane fields and the land is just left there. Another factor is definitely tourism, which is Hawaiʻiʻs biggest industry. When colonists started arriving in Hawaiʻi that was the start of tourism which led to major changes and degradation in the land. Today most of Hawaiʻi is used for tourism and affected majorly by the amount of people coming to Hawaiʻi
The two propelling factors are that there is an issue of national vs native rights surfacing. And there was a major switch in culture. The national vs native rights came from when the Americans overthrew Hawaii and a division between Hawaiian and White became an issue. This is a huge reason as to why many natives are homeless and many whites/foreigners have land, because they have the benefit. The culture switch really sent Hawaii into a depression, our culture was switched and many things were taken out and replaced for their enjoyment. We as Hawaiians can no longer practice cultural experiences in a peaceful manner. A lot of natives have been relocated due to the culture being switched.
