Civilizations and Resources
Sources suggest the leadership character traits of a group leader affect the value system of a group of people. It is evident from many examples in previous lessons, like Balian and his leadership skills and current events like the war in Ukraine. When looking at Balianʻs leadership skills, he is a servant leader who has the self-determination to lead his followers to continue to fight alongside him. The evidence signifies the power one has by showing positive leadership character. Balian served amongst his people, which gained the trust of everyone. With this in mind, it is evident that the positive lead of one like Balian can affect a group of people in a positive way.

It can be argued that the leadership character traits of the leader of a group do affect the value system of a group of people. For example, according to “Flipped Lecture Notes #2 - Lā 7C Great Leaders Alexander vs Asoka” Alexander the Great ruled during a time of many wars. Throughout this time, Alexander the Great was very confident and somewhat cocky. This led the people that he was ruling to become confident in their victory. Led by this confidence, Alexander the Great and his army created the largest empire in the world (at the time). This demonstrates that the confidence passed from Alexander to his people allowed for success throughout his empire.

Another example of leadership character traits of the leader affecting a group's value system is Princess Pauahiʻs beliefs. Princess Pauahi, Queen Kaʻahumanu, and Queen Keʻōpūolani were some of the first Hawaiians to hear, read, love, and wholeheartedly embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ and were among the first to be baptized, converting fully to Christianity. Although princess Pauahi is no longer alive, her beliefs affect her “people” to this day. In Pauahi’s will, she stated that she wanted the children of Kamehameha schools to come from a “Christian foundation”. To this day, students of Kamehameha schools are required to take Christian ed, and attend chapel. From this, it can be concluded that the leadership character traits of the leader of a group do affect the value system of a group of people.

Resources can be hoarded and locked away to give power to those with the key, making it very easy to manipulate those in need. In the time of Johannes, Gutenburg priests were using the bible to manipulate the public. In that period the bible was viewed as law, but all the bibles were written in Latin, priests were the only ones who spoke Latin so they would translate the bible for the public, twist a few things here and there and no one knew any better. Johannes Gutenburg eventually used a printing press to print english copies of the bible and put an end to the manipulation. This applies to the middle ages resource hoarding because back then what they were doing was quite similar. In the middle ages many new religions were brought into existence. People used religion to manipulate others, like they still do today.

It is vital that people recognize how geography can positively or negatively impact the resources a group of people controls. The videos in flipped Lecture #5, “Guns, Germs, and Steel,” confirm that people in the old world had more access to useful resources than people in the new world did. For example, the Spaniards and people of the old world had access to metals and steel which meant that they were able to produce guns and higher-tech weapons than the people in the old world could produce. It is clear from this evidence that the geographic location of the Spaniards positively impacted the resources they controlled. In conclusion, advantages and disadvantages in regards to resources can be gained from the geographic location of a group of people. The resources a civilization either has or lacks can also affect the way they interact with other civilizations around the world.

Sources suggest that access to resources can affect the way one civilization evolves and behaves towards others. For example, in flipped lecture #1, “Ancient Civilizations and Their Characteristics”, we were introduced to trades. The economy of the Egyptians was heavily dependent on their farming and trading up and down the Nile. This demonstrates that in order to make up for their lack of resources, they had to behave in some type of way to come up with trading arrangements with other civilizations. In conclusion, the resources that a civilization possesses or lacks can affect the way that the people must behave toward other civilizations.

It is vital that Sustainability plays a strong role in leveraging such resources as civilizations grow and evolve because sustainability means to exist and develop without using up natural resources for the future. For example, for civilizations to grow and evolve we need to improve on technology and other things without diminishing natural resources that are important to hold everything together. This shows that natural Resources are important because future generations need to have a chance to learn about them instead of them going away and the future generations are left with nothing but only the new and improved technology and resources. From this it can be concluded that it is very important to protect and save our Natural resources for the future generations and to keep it for the foundation of civilization.
