Evolution to Revolution

The character traits of a leader of a group can affect the value system of a group of people because values are what the group sees as important. If a leader sees something that is important but others donʻt see it as important then it will change the value system. For example a leader that is persuasive can change the value system by getting his people to do something that he knows is right but his people donʻt see it. In history this is seen in the actions of Alexander the Great of Macedonia and Asoka of The Murayan Empire. Alexander beat many armies and he led through power. Alexander made people follow him in fear and power. Asoka on the other hand led through peace, but this wasn't always the case (Alexander, 2021). At first Asoka killed and went to war until one day he went to war but felt so bad for the people he killed that he went to Buddhism (Alexander, 2021). Asoka then started to lead through peace and his people followed (Alexander, 2021). This all goes back to how the traits of a leader can affect the value system of a group of people because when Asoka was killing people and being violent that is what everyone else did that was the value system. But when Asoka went to peace, so did everyone else and his values and traits started to change the group of peopleʻs value systems.
Another character trait that would affect the value system of a group could also be inspirational. For example in the Kingdom of Heaven there is a king, King Balian. King Balian is left by himself to fight a very powerful man named Saladin, everyone in Jerusalem (which is where they were fighting) wanted to run away but Balian said no. Balian changed everyone's mind and he gave them a speech and inspired people to stay and fight for their families, friends, uncles, and for all of Jerusalem. he was in control, he was inspirational, and all of these traits are what changed the beliefs of the people (Copy of FL 5 [Template] Kingdom of Heaven - Discussion & Viewing Guide, 2021).

Geography can impact how people live and how they act and see the world. Most of the resources used in the world usually come from the ʻāina. Geography can impact the kind of land an area is on and what resources a group of people can live off of. Geography could also impact the resources or ‘āina a group controls based on the geographical theme of location. In this sense, location is knowledge of the absolute or relative location of something and/or somewhere. It can also be knowledge about that certain place. Because location is such a big part of geography and survival, it can be fought for in war and could possibly be taken away from the original leaders of that certain land. If a kingdom is built on poor land then not a lot of valuable will come from it. This will lead to a leader not having good control over the land and his/her people. Geography is also the principal factor when it comes to trade or language. A civilization's relations with another civilization can be determined on the color, culture, religion and where the civilizations are from. In flip lecture guns germ and steel it says “Villages were abandoned, climate was too dry,, unable to farm their land they were forced out”. This tells me that since the climate was so dry, those people had to leave home because of the land being bad for that civilization to thrive.

People want to control over other empires or societies for power and for resources because having resources or natural resources is what makes you powerful and in control. For example In Guns Germs and Steel natural resources that The Middle East had were crops, farm animals, and they had water (Kanaʻi 2021). The New World didnʻt have these luxuries, and this would be one of the reasons that would motivate a society or nation to want to control another or for The New World to control The Middle East. The New World didnʻt have crops or animals but The Middle East did which would be a good reason for why The New World would want to control The Middle East. In the lecture Guns Germs and Steel the Spanish people or Spanians had horses, these horses helped fight battles helped transport people and overall were just good to have. The Spanish having horses caught the Incaʻs peopleʻs eye and they invited the Spanians into their empire soon after they attacked them. The natural resource they had were horses and this is what motivated them to attack, why would they attack them? They attacked them to gain power and to obtain certain natural resources that they didnʻt have (Kanaʻi 2021).
An example of why one society or nation might want to control another is for the natural resources of land. For example in the flip lecture Dark Ages and Crusades it talked about the crusades and why they happened. The crusades happened because people wanted power but they also wanted control of the land and of the empire. The land is the natural resource and the motivation for why one empire might want to control another, taking that land and that empire is what motivated the crusades. The crusades also happened because of their religious beliefs and systems, the land that was being fought for or Jerusalem had many religious things on it which then made people fight over this land. In the Kingdom of Heaven Balian was a crusader noble and he fought in the crusades. Balian had to fight Saladin for the land of Jerusalem. This example is similar to the Dark Ages and Crusades flip notes because they are both fighting for the natural resource of land. In the Kingdom of Heaven Balian and Saladinʻs natural resources or land is what is motivating them to fight and to control one another. Overall the main reason for why one empire might want to control another is because of power and because they want control over the resources, land, and people.

Considering one's value system or religion, yes one's societyʻs value system can impact their decisions and policies over another society. For example In the flip lecture Guns Germs and Steel it talks about how the Spaniards always try to convert people to christian before fighting. In the battle between the Spaniards and the Inca when the priest yelled that the Inca would not convert to Christianity it was the signal to go fight(Kanaʻi, 2021). This evidence proves that one's belief system or religion impacts their decisions because in this fight the Spanish army chose to have mercy and to ask if their enemy would like to join christianity and this decision of having mercy is based off of their religion and or their belief system. Another example of this would be from the flip lecture about the movie Kingdom of Heaven, In the movie Kingdom of Heaven God is motivating the Muslims to fight, they believe if God is on their side they will not lose. The christians want to fight to protect Jerusalem and their sacred places. This proves that religion or one's belief system impacts their decisions because the people would not be fighting if they didnʻt have that belief that God was on their side.
There are many reasons about how one's religion or belief system can affect your decisions of control over another society. When you are fighting in a war you are doing it for what you believe in and you are fighting to take control over another country or society. An example about how your religion and belief systems impact your decisions and policies of control over another society would be from the flip lecture Dark Ages and Crusades. In the flip lecture the crusaders were fighting because they had a common enemy, they were also fighting to protect Christ and his kingdom. Leadership for the crusaders was chosen sometimes by who brought the most people but there were no main leaders. The Sunni/Shiʻa split in islam helped the Christians win the first crusade because they didnʻt join the Egyptians(CRASH COURSE, 2021). The Fourth Crusade changed the notion of a crusade because people were not doing it for religion anymore they wanted money and power. The 4th Crusade legitimized the idea that crusading didnʻt have to be about pilgrimage. This example from the flip lecture has to do with how your religion and belief system affects your decisions because the crusaders were fighting for their religion and for what they believed in this is solid evidence that religion affects your decisions and also control over another society.

One society’s value system could impact our society’s policies of control over another society depending on the other’s goals. Every society and individual person of those societies has one or more things that they desire to obtain. Some wants could be as simple as money and land. But, the things they do in order to obtain these things that they want could cause either a positive or negative impact towards another society. For example, the Europeans saw that Africa was rich in resources and decided to enslave Africans because they wanted money. The crusaders fought other societies because they wanted to take their Holy Land and keep it to themselves. “The Crusades were a series of religious wars... started primarily to secure control of holy sites considered sacred…” (History.com Editors, 2010). In the end of Kingdom of Heaven, Balian surrendered to Saladin because he wanted peace for his people. These actions were caused because of the desires of everyone in the battle and their vision of the Holy land. In conclusion, societies could impact another society because of an opposing society’s goals.

There are logical steps that people could take to progress after the enlightenment period. The enlightenment period brought knowledge, philosophy and new technology. The next logical step would be to follow through on the new knowledge gained from the enlightenment period. When talking about homelessness, people shouldn’t talk about what should be done. They should actually do it. It is time for action and not time for talking about knowledge or philosophy.

In the #8 flip lecture notes because the industrial revolution wages were high and energy was cheap. These prices led directly to the industrial revolution by giving firms incentives to invent technologies that substituted capital and coal for labor. The industrial revolution was an increase in production brought about by the use of machines and characterized by the use of new energy sources. Coal was the main thing that impacted energy. The industrial revolution was all about using different forms of energy to automate production. Coal quickly replaced wood for heating and cooking etc. Some examples of new energy today that continue to use and build upon old energy would be windmills, solar panels, and dams. People mainly wanted these natural resources and things because it would bring them power and it would bring them wealth. People wanted to make cash crops and according to Karl Marx people would abuse industrialization and over do things/go too far just for power or to get things done faster and more efficiently(Copy of Room 3 - Personal Age of Revolutions Comparison Chart & Notes, 2021). For example the use of coal, the use of coal and also fossil fuels are bad for our environment but because we are so power greedy we burn it anyways killing our ecosystems and over all our world. Just as Karl Marx said we are abusing the act of industrialization.
The silk road was used basically as a huge trade or the route that people would take to get to places and trade. The route would link China to the west and this would make it so they could trade goods and ideas. Between Rome and China, the silk road went westward, wool, gold, and silver went east. China would also receive different religions such as Christianity and Buddhism from India. Cash crops were also starting to get utilized and used. Cash crops are a crop produced for its commercial value rather than for use by the grower and this was traded using the silk road. This has to do with the industrial revolution because first of all they are trading things that they had domesticated or made such as clothing, goods, etc. This silk road also relates to scientific revolution because it is a whole new trading technology and route. The silk road may not be a gun or something with actual technology in it but it is something that was carefully planned out and a sophisticated plan about how to get from point a to point b in the fastest and most efficient way possible. During the revolutions such as Haitian Revolution, French Revolution and pretty much all the revolutions people were treated unfairly. This was the main cause of these revolutions, Inequality. People were traded and they were owned and were forced to work or in other words they were slaves. These slaves were mainly black and they have been miss treated through a long period of history. Overall the main reason for trading, industrializing, using cash crops, and even scientific revolution is to gain power and grow their empires(Copy of Room 3 - personal Age of Revolutions Comparison Chart & Notes, 2021).

One factor that could contribute to inciting the age of revolutions could be exploration because the Europeans have traveled far and wide and explored many different places and gained tons of resources which are resources that we still use today. Another factor that contributes to inciting the age of revolutions are the people of color or POC as well as leaders from the past that have created a path for the future of mankind by creating many rights that we still use today. POC have also contributed to inciting the age of revolutions because of how they are treated and seen back in the day when slavery was a thing compared to nowadays. But people still discriminate against the POC. The Black Lives Matter movement was and currently is known throughout the globe therefore affecting Hawaiʻi with having many rights that we have now came from the leaders from these revolutions. One right that a lot of people use to the fullest is the freedom of speech meaning that we as people are free to speak out about certain problems facing the world and give our opinion about these certain situations. These factors continue to appear in both America and Hawaiʻi today.
