The people in Africa can't grow agricultural foods because of recurring droughts. Even though they have very rich soil they canʻt grow any food because of barely any rain. And food prices are going up so most African people or communities can't afford to buy these foods. 27.4% of Africaʻs population is severely food insecure. And 42% of Africaʻs wealth is held by high net worth individuals from Africa. The land is dying so the people and animals on it arenʻt able to survive there. The people in Africa donʻt have enough food to feed themselves. Which means they donʻt have enough money and are in poverty. The reason why Africaʻs food prices are going up is because in places where the food is grown like Zimbabwe are having crop failures. Meaning they canʻt produce enough food to be affordable for the people to buy. Like in the flipped lecture talking about civilizations Africa doesnʻt have some of those characteristics like a good economic system within the civilization. In the movie Kingdom of Heaven Balian goes to Jerusalem and I saw that there were a lot of people who didnʻt have a home and not enough food to eat. A connection I can make is that Africa and Hawaii have too many people on the land. And that means there are limited resources to go to everyone. - Reid, Kathryn. “Africa Hunger, Famine: Facts, FAQs, and How to Help | World Vision.” World Vision, 21 May 2021, https://www.worldvision.org/hunger-news-stories/africa-hunger-famine-facts - Facts, FAQs, and How to Help | World Vision.” World Vision, 21 May 2021, https://www.worldvision.org/hunger-news-stories/africa-hunger-famine-facts Travis:
An organization that is addressing this issue in the local community is a non-profit called Aloha Harvest. It is a food rescue and redistribution organization, taking quality excess food from donors such as grocery stores, hotels, and restaurants, and feeding the hungry. The organization website says, “In 2020, we worked with 360 food donors and 273 recipient agencies to redistribute over 2.7 million pounds of good food that would have otherwise been wasted!” (“Home | Aloha Harvest | Rescuing Food to Feed Hawaii”). This organization seems to be doing a good job in that it is helping a lot of people with food that would have otherwise been thrown away and gone to waste. A problem with this organization is that they can only distribute as much food as that people have extra or can afford to donate. There is only so much people they can distribute to so they cannot help everyone. However, they are helping and providing for who they can. This type of leadership is servant leadership. This is seen in Gandhi as the people who peacefully protested are similar to the people who donate food. Both of these groups of people took things in their own hands and helped the cause. There was also a similarity between the situations of the non-profit and the French Revolution. The rich ate wastefully and they could have given excess food to the people who needed it but they chose not to, unlike the Aloha Harvest. This type of leadership, where everyone can be a leader and can contribute, is powerful because together, we are even stronger. - “Home | Aloha Harvest | Rescuing Food to Feed Hawaii.” Aloha Harvest, alohaharvest.org/ Accessed 7 July 2021. - Covington, Richard. “Marie Antoinette.” Smithsonian, Nov. 2006, www.smithsonianmag.com/history/marie-antoinette-134629573/. |

Many people around the world or suffering because of Covid-19. One of the spots where it is the worst is Africa. People over there donʻt have the supplies to take care of themselves or others. The people that are trying to help is the US because we have the supplies and medical help for us and others. In Niger people are starting to step up to help others, they are trying to help the poor people to get better. They are tying to do cash transfers which is basically money given to them by private donors. These people are stepping in one by one to show their support for their community around them. Yes there are a lot of challenges to this aid because a lot of people in the community are suffering which doesnʻt leave many people to help get the sick people better. So this may mean that they might pull a lot of younger kids from their sick families and teach them how to take care of themselves and their families. This type of leadership can impact Africa because once people start to notice whats going on they will want to take action to help save their people and have a better future for the next generation. People are now starting to step in and help their people. - Covid Surge in Africa Raises Fears of a Calamity Like India’s. (2021). The New York Times. Yes the issue of Hunger does impact our aina. Impacts that hunger has on our aina is the loss of native Hawaiians and locals. They affect Hawaii as a community also because without our local people not getting enough food there will be alot more deaths killing off our aina one by one. In Hawaii today there are over 160,000 people going through hunger issues and 54,000 of those people are kids. That means ⅕ kids in Hawaii are facing hunger problems. This is so important because even at a young age our keikis are suffering from this. However this can be explained ever since the colonization of Hawaii becoming a state more and more Hawaiians were pushed to be homeless and hungry because of the costs going up. Not only for food but housing too, that's why so many Hawaiians move out of Hawaii so they can live a regular life at a regular cost. Hawaii has become a luxury for tourists that's why everything got expensive, however for the people already living here it sucked because the Hawaiian government saw how much money they were making and raised the prices of food and housing not only for tourists but the Hawaiians too(The people that BEEN staying in Hawaii). However there could be a lot of explanations for this. But this one is a under- talked about reason - “Hawaii | Feeding America.” Www.feedingamerica.org, www.feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/hawaii#:~:text=In%20Hawaii%2C%20162%2C220%20people%20are . Our UN goal plays a very important role in the current issues happening in Africa. I say this because our goal is zero hunger and the people in Africa are starving. In this article it says that 20% of the African population are in hunger. It also says that 33.8 million people face acute food insecurity. This means that they have the highest percentage of people in starvation in the whole world. And that is why our goal, zero hunger, plays a big role there. Our goal plays a big role because it is trying to help that 20% of the population to have food to survive with. In this article it says that education is the best way to stop hunger. This means that if they have an education then they can get income to buy food for themselves and their families. In Africa if all the children were able to go to school then they would be able to get their job and be able to pay for food and a home. So even though our goal was zero hunger, education is important for us to survive. - Reid, Kathryn. “Africa Hunger, Famine: Facts, FAQs, and How to Help | World Vision.” World Vision, 21 May 2021, https://www.worldvision.org/hunger-news-stories/africa-hunger-famine-facts - Project, Borgen. “10 Effective World Hunger Solutions | The Borgen Project.” The Borgen Project, 2 Oct. 2016, https://borgenproject.org/10-ways-stop-world-hunger/ |

In Hawaiʻi there are a lot of homeless people spread around Oʻahu. With these homeless people they have no food and are starving to death. There are a little over 4,400 homeless sheltered and unsheltered people living on the streets of Oʻahu. Some homeless people that live on the streets refuse to be taken care of or having help given to them. They say that they need to live and survive on the streets. To help the homeless we need to reach out to the first service providers and see what will truly help the homeless problem on Oʻahu. It would be better if they served meals at shelters because they would have more comfort and feel more safe. When they are done eating they canʻt liter because there will be people them to watch them to make sure they throw away all of their trash. Our goal is to feed the homeless and to make sure they get off of the streets and find a better place to live. - Denby Fawcett. (2019, April 2). Are there suggested Solutions for the of this goal to address it globally in your location? If so, what are they? A good solution to this problem would be donating food to shelters. This would be a good solution because when you are donating food all the food you donate is going straight to the ones in need. I know this because on the Hawaii foodbank website they are a 100% non-profit organization meaning everything you donate is put to helping the ones in need. Especially since it's such a big amount of Hawaii that is suffering from hunger they shouldn’t be getting profit because little profit they could have took would be taking away from helping the ones in need. Another good solution for us reaching our goal would be to not waste food. Hawaii is a small island. We should use every part of what we have to its fullest use counting in food. If you are wasting food you are throwing away perfectly good food that could've been eaten which is contributing to the problem. A website from the usda showed that 40% of the food in America is wasted. However 820 million people in the world suffer from hunger problems. If we want to help we need to make sure if we are buying to much food to be generous and donate, And those are things that could help contribute to our goal. - “Our Story.” Hawaii Foodbank, hawaiifoodbank.org/about/. Currently, one of the solutions being implemented right now and will continue in the future are food banks. Food banks work to transport unwanted food that would be otherwise wasted, to those in hunger. While this is a good solution, it is limited because there is only so much food that can be donated. If the amount of food donated is less than the amount of people in need, then there will still be people starving. Also, this solution is more short term, and while it may provide a meal to someone on a day, it will not necessarily help them in the long run. One of the possible long term solutions could go in hand with one of the solutions for homelessness. This solution is providing homes/shelters for people to live in while working to save money to move out. The biggest cause of hunger is poverty, and if people do not have enough money to buy food or a home, it will be hard to find or keep a job, which would allow them to get out of poverty. If they are given these things, through programs and food banks, they are better geared towards making it out of poverty. However, a downside to this solution is that it takes longer, and is not guaranteed - “A Day in the Life of Aloha Harvest.” Hawaii Magazine, 29 Sept. 2018, www.hawaiimagazine.com/a-day-in-the-life-of-aloha-harvest/ .
