Colonization heavily impacted gender roles within our nation. Before colonization of Hawaiʻi, men and women were nearly equals. The only real differences were when it came to eating. How men and women, each weren’t allowed to eat certain foods or eat together. Though besides that women were able to have the same occupations as men, battle in wars, be aliʻi, and many other things. After colonization though, our people were forced to assimilate to these Western masculine dominated ideals. I think it hurts our modern efforts to achieve gender equality, because the adoption of the colonizer beliefs set our people very far back. I think imperialism caused many Native Hawaiians to lose their cultural roots when it comes to our culture and language. Throughout the history of imperialism and colonialism in Hawaiʻi, we see how our people were often discouraged from taking part in cultural activities. For example, the ban on hula or expression of our religion, or the ban on ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi. Those acts of discouragement still have ill-effects on our people til this day, which is quite sad. I hope one day that all Kānaka Maoli will be able to freely express themselves and indulge in cultural practices without feeling discouraged. Akana, H. (n.d.). Women throughout history have hardly been given equal or similar treatment and chances to that of a man. The case is also the same for the French Revolution. Women were very confined and restricted as to what they were allowed to do. Yet women were eager to break out of this barrier and voice their opinions. Though during the Industrial Age, sparked a wave of feminism that was before unknown by the world. Somewhat socialist ideologies and values were spreading widely, causing more and more women to join men dominated occupations and begin to fight for equal rights. It was also during the Industrial Age that women throughout many countries were allowed the right to vote. Which was a huge advancement at the time to gender equality. Overall the events that occurred during the Industrial Age brought about many improvements in gender equality. Being aware of the history of the world is extremely beneficial. We're able to see how past events have affected society. Things that could work and things that couldn't. From past societies of our world, we are able to see a plethora of things that have benefited gender equality. While we have also seen things that made many drawbacks in the fight for gender equality. For example, we've seen how laws like the Educational Equity Act and the 19th Amendment. How these two actions helped greatly to give women chances in life equal to that of men. Detailed timeline. (2018, October 23). How do you think the events of the Silk Road, Exploration, Expansion & Enlightenment impact the UN Goal & Kahiau Topic that you chose to study? I think the events that have taken place in the past such as the Silk Road, Exploration, Expansion & Enlightenment heavily impact my UN Goal which is Gender Equality. From early on, society has inflicted gender roles/norms upon humans. We've been told from early on in life what is socially acceptable for someone of a certain gender to do. Though during the Age of Enlightenment, women began to demand equality, natural rights, and liberty amongst both sexes. Ushering in a new, never before seen feminist movement. That with time would evolve into modern day feminism. Also, during the colonial and exploration period of the world. This community was heavily dominated by men with very well known names such as Christopher Columbus or Captain Cooke. Though, there were woman explorers and woman who ran their own businesses during the colonial times. |
