EVOLUTION TO REVELOUTION

Throughout history, we have seen groups of people who are much better off than others simply because of where they started off in the world. Different areas of the globe have access to different natural resources and cash crops. An example of this is the people of Papua New Guinea who are still struggling to maintain enough resources for their people and move forward as a society. If you were to compare this to the people of Europe who use machines for everyday needs such as the printing press for the mass spread of information, you could see how Europe's advantages help set them up for success in the long run.
These circumstances can also help determine a group’s lifestyle and value systems. An instance of this is through the Catholic and Protestant religions. While the Catholic Church values the pope as a strong connection to heaven, the Protestant Church sees him as just another figure. Differences in geography additionally affect the way a civilization acts towards another group. For example, during the Black Lives Matter movement, we were able to truly see how people of color were poorly treated and judged based on the color of their skin.

Resources and ʻaina can help a group leader gain leverage in the middle ages because it was the main source of power and income. Owning land also helped show wealth in the middle ages which helped set people up for success in the long run. An intelligent leader could have the forethought to use their power and land to set their people up for success. If a leader had land with fertile soil, the civilizations could use their land to advance their society to set themselves up for success. Land could also be used as a form of trade, and the leader could exchange a piece of land for the needs of their people. They could also use the profit that they earned for expansions of their property, and increase their wealth.
However, just as a leader can use their land and their wealth to gain leverage for their people and their community, they can also use it to benefit only themselves. An egotistical leader could use their fertile land to only benefit themselves by making his people pay a hefty cost and taxation to work on their land. Attitudes like this can lead to poverty and the downfall of an empire. For example, Adolf Hitler decided that the best way for his reign and country to thrive was to kill all of the Jews, gays, hippies, and people that he felt were unfit to live in the perfect world he imagined. In Ancient Hawaii, when King Kamehameha was trying to conquer all eight Hawaiian Islands, the island chiefs were willing to put their land, people, resources, and wealth at risk to improve their ego, and push their image of glory onto others.

Sustainability rights play a huge role in telling which civilizations were able to grow and evolve, and which were dragged down by their actions. Throughout history, we have found remains of communities that were left behind because they had depleted all of their resources. An example of this is when the Roman Empire was running out of cash crops and resources to use from the land that they had conquered, and as a result, had fewer funds to invest in obtaining more cities. However, we were able to see how Native Hawaiians and other indigenous people had values put into place such as when we take things from the ocean or the land. We make sure that the decisions we make today should result in a sustainable world seven generations in the future.
Even in today’s society, this mindset is still in play. In Hawaii, we have removed invasive species from killing our unique ecosystem so future keiki have a way to connect with their ancestors. This is also why we have laws for hunting seasons to produce enough food to meet our needs now without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Using this logic, we can also reason that civilizations that prosper today are also places that used the seven-generation method to help gain power over unprosperous nations. For example, The United States, which is one of the biggest food aid suppliers, has donated food to nations struggling to support their own needs such as Turkey, Poland, Cyprus, etc.

A leader's character traits can affect the value system of a community in a positive and negative way. Leaders can make their civilizations thrive by setting up systems that influence the expansion of resources and cash crops. For example, Cleopatra built up their empire by trading with different nations. This resulted in a boost in their economies' well-being. We can also see the benefits of great leadership through Pauahi. She was caring and had the foresight to build a school to benefit Native Hawaiians. Her hope was that education would be the answer to help our lahui thrive in the future with an incoming western society influencing people's everyday lives. As the students of Kamehameha Schools, we are living proof of Pauahi's success in helping many generations past her own times.
However, just as a leader's traits can help an empire thrive, it can also lead to its demise. If a leader focuses solely on their personal success, colonizing other nations, and starting wars, their people will start to feel the effects of their actions. For example, throughout World War, I and World War II, the population of countries across the globe felt many harsh impacts such as a lack of resources, jobs, trades, and much more. Even after the World Wars, there were many other issues that arose such as overpopulation, lack of food, poverty, and much more. We can also see how bad leadership can lead a community to its downfall through Adolf Hitler. He decided the most efficient way to make the best empire was to eliminate all the people he felt were dragging it down such as the Jews, gays, hippies, etc.
