Colonization impacts my Kahiau project because throughout history the displacement of people has been an age old tale. When colonizers come in and take what they want they have no regard for those who were there first. The overall theme of our project is homelessness. It's something any native culture has dealt with because of colonization. In my opinion, colonization does nothing to help the world's homelessness issues. It's something that continues to leave people homeless and suffering. Taking resources away from those who need them. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/23/us/native-americans-homeless-minneapolis-reservations.html Imperialism changes our understanding of these things in History through the lens of our cultural history of language, culture, and activism in the community by reminding us no matter what power is what matters most. At the end of the day whoever has the most power is in charge. It's one of the main reasons why the United States of America has been able to get away with its crimes against the Hawaiian Kingdom. Because they had the stronger military. If the world continues to live with its idea of “money = power and power = in charge” then the world will never get better. https://www.studentsofhistory.com/forms-of-imperialism The Impacts of RevolutionThe industrial age and the french revolution affects my Kahiau project because of the need to gather more resources. Because of the idea that workers are expendable. In Hawaiʻi one of the leading problems which cause homelessness is the high living cost. The cost of living doesnt line up with people's work pay. So most end up living paycheck to paycheck if theyʻre lucky. The industrial age also brought about the idea of a class system revolving around money. Because of this money is now seen as one of the most important things needed to survive. By understanding what happened in the Industrial Age and the French Revolution help us understand many of the problems we face here in Hawaiʻi today. The more we continue to work people without paying them enough to live the worse the conditions get. No one wants to work without proper pay. Many homeless people are homeless because they can't find a job or they can't find a job that pays enough to keep a roof over their head. We can use the events of the Industrial Age and French Revolution to remind us and make sure we dont treat the working class like expendable things rather than people with need. The Art of ActivismI learnt that art has many different forms. And it can be used in many different ways. Music, painting, clothes, dances, movies, all of these things are some form of art. And all of these leave an impression on people in some way. Art can be shared and multiplied. It can be big or small. Art is something that catches your eye and makes you interested in what's going on. I think art plays a huge role in raising awareness about social issues these days. Not only because it gives people something to look at and use to spread the word. But also because art can last forever. Art can be used as reminders of what was lost and what we're fighting for. It can be used to shift perspectives and gives a body to the words we speak. It brings the issues, the fighting, the protesting, the lost and hurt, and most importantly the message, a visual representation. Something people remember. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/15/t-magazine/most-influential-protest-art.html For me my sacred place that I wrote about is death in general. It's something many people fear, and it's also something many people long for. It's around us 24/7 whether it be people or nature. To me I think of death as something untouchable and unchangeable. You can avoid death as long as possible but in the end youʻll die eventually. I wanted to highlight that death isn't as scary as many make it to be. Growing up being religiously abused I was taught death was something I needed to fear. When people I knew died I would cry, not because I missed them but because I was scared for them. Having gotten out of that situation I've learnt death doesn't have to be scary. It offers some sense of relief and peace for most. When you die theyʻll always be people on the other side waiting for you. I wanted to show the beauty that can be brought about by something “terrifying”. Kahiau AdvocacyThe most important connection between world history and advocacy would be the ability to use history as an example. Many of the problems we face today and advocate on behalf of are problems weʻve faced in the past. Things we have been through and can take notes from. The quote “those who do not know history are destined to repeat it” is the perfect summary for this. When we fight for change in the world it's because we want to see the world change. If it doesnt we may end up in situations like the past or worse. The past is our outline, notes, and blueprint all in one. If you dont know it, how can you change the future? The most important thing I've learned so far is just how far the media can go. How the media is able to decide and filter what it wants and doesnt want to show. The media is a powerful tool when it comes to advocacy. If you want to reach a certain demographic there's most likely somewhere online where you can. The media allows people to like and share things with people from around the world. I think that's something this generation understands a lot. We were raised with the media all around us. We grew alongside technology. To us media advocacy has always been there. I think our generations ability to navigate the internet the way we do will most definitely help in the future of advocacy. The Silk Road and Colonizations ImpactFor our UN goal No Poverty, the silk road offered a lot of beneficial opportunities. It had a very positive impact when it came to no poverty. The Silk Road allowed people the ability to trade things such as agricultural resources. It also allowed people to grow their understanding of the world outside of their homeland. With how many different people who would go through the Silk Road stories and knowledge were often traded. I think the Silk Road definitely played a role in keeping poverty from spreading. On the flip side Colonization did the opposite. Probably having the biggest and worst impact on our UN goal. Colonization as we've seen it throughout history has always been the act of forcing native people out of their homes and taking whatever resources you want. Colonization has been proven to leave many native people displaced and homeless. In my opinion colonization has done more harm than good. The obvious boost in homelessness being one of them.
