Impacts of the Human Species and factors of the Agricultural Revolution & Agrarian Empires6/16/2020 My group's UN development goal is Life on Land, but specifically deforestation. Agricultural Revolution has a big impact on deforestation. This is because agriculture requires open lands, so they clear out forests to get the space. Deforestation can be seen worldwide. One example of this is in the Amazon Rainforest. The forest is filled with endangered and unique species just like the ones here in Hawai'i. An example of deforestation on the island of O'ahu is in Urban Honolulu. Over 76,000 trees were cleared out in the past 4 years for more buildings. One solution made in Hawai'i was on the island of Kaua'i. They passed a law that said nothing can be built taller than a palm tree. Also, 97% of Kaua'i is used for conservation and agriculture. From Agrarian to the Scientific Revolution Deforestation can be seen in most places in the world. This is because of the advancements made to society. Agriculture affected this issue because it requires a lot of space which caused the clearing of forests. The jobs and economy wouldn't be the same without the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment Period. A lot of this requires land and this land is created by deforestation. Deforestation can be seen in Hawai'i because things such as sugar cane fields and buildings in Urban Honolulu require open land. These things again relate to agriculture, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment period. What Would Happen If All The Trees Were Cut Down? (n.d.). They took over great amounts of land by using these three weapons. This plays a role into the issue of deforestation because without European colonization, deforestation most likely wouldn't have been a problem. An example is in Hawaiʻi, if they didnʻt take over our lands, great amounts of trees wouldnʻt get cut down. https://youtu.be/GFewQBPlFIU Leadership Model of Gandhi Gandhi saw the problems in India and how people were being treated unfairly. He decided to do something about it by peacefully protesting. He realized that violence would only escalate the problem. Unfortunately, violence is something that people liked when they were protesting, but Gandhi stuck with his idea of peaceful protesting. The protests in India remind me of the Black Lives Matter movement. This is because they are both caused by people being treated unfairly because of their skin color. An example in Hawaiʻi is Kū Kiaʻi Mauna. Although these protests arenʻt about skin color, they are important to people protesting. This issue is about the land and its importance to the Hawaiian culture. Mahatma Gandhi. (2019, September 04). This talks about how resources affect society greatly. This affects modern-day society because overpopulation causes people to fight over limited resources which results in more conflicts. This plays a role in the Black Lives Matter movement because people in the black or African-American community feel that they don't have the same resources as other races. Because of this, it causes conflict over the resources or rights they don't have. The Malthusian Flux also plays a role in my group's research issue of deforestation. Deforestation is caused mainly by agriculture or modern city area. People create lands to create resources in which they lack. Colonialism and Imperialism also play a role in deforestation. These two ideas bring people to become controlling over the land and use it to their full benefit. In this case, it is creating open land for business and profit. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Malthusian#:~:text=Medical%20Definition%20of%20Malthusian,poverty%20and%20degradation%20inevitably%20result In Between WW1 and WW2 The Treaty of Versailles was an agreement to have a truce between the Allies (France, Britain, Russia, and America) and the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman empire). This was the official end of the first World War. However, this treaty also made Germany very upset because they lost a lot in war and had to lose extra because of the contract. In the contract, it said that Germany had to pay a lot of money that they didn't have and they had to accept that they were responsible for the war. This made Germany want to get revenge because they felt that they got peace without victory. Hitler then rose as a leader seeking revenge against the Allied forces. He created new strategies and wanted more advanced technologies for weapons. He also showed no mercy. If the treaty wasn't so hard towards Germany, they may not have come seeking revenge. Not only did the Treaty of Versailles affect those fighting in the war, but it also affected other nations that weren't involved. Some of these nations include Hawai'i, Tahiti, and New Zealand. These three nations were taken over by America, France, and Britain to be used as bases in the Pacific. This changed the future of those nations permanently. The first World War also affected my group's Kahiau Research issue of deforestation. This is because during the war, many resources were lost including the business of agriculture. This caused people to cut down vegetation in order to gain back lost resources. Pruitt, S. (2018, June 29). How the Treaty of Versailles and German Guilt Led to World War II. They feel mistreated by the government, police, and the people who took their land many years ago. The protests have inspired them to speak up for the disrespectfulness they have received. The article also has an example of this about a 17-year-old indigenous boy who was arrested by the police. His feet were kicked back from underneath him causing him severe pain as he landed on the concrete. Stories like this have started a revolution in Australia for their rights and justice. Geography Theme This event fits the geography theme of Location. This is because the mistreatment of the indigenous people is in one specific place (Australia). This sort of event could happen elsewhere, but the people are protesting for a specific reason. They want their rights and justice as the indigenous people of Australia. Reaction I thought that this article is very similar to situations in Hawai’i. This is because we both feel, as native people, that we and our land are being mistreated. Australia was colonized by foreigners just like Hawai’i was. This story also reminded me of the book Following the Rabbit Proof Fence that we read in class. This is because both were related to the mistreatment because of race in Australia. Connections/Analysis This event deals with the world history theme of power and authority. This is because whoever is in charge makes all of the decisions. The indigenous people of Australia feel that their rights are being taken away from the people in power. They feel that they have been overruled by someone who isn’t even a native to the land. This is just like many smaller nations that were ruled over, such as Hawai’i. Work Cited Hollingsworth, J. It can be in any area of interest such as government, education, law, or religion. Although things change, the present is just the pieces of the past put together. For example, America wasn't always here. It was made from the ancient empires of its past. The ancient empires didn't have as much structure because they just started a new civilization. Some of the differences in America compared to the ancient empires has to do with the areas of interest I talked about earlier. For example, the laws today are much more different than they were many years ago. The laws have changed to fit modern-day society, just like many other things that create our civilization. Hawai'i was once its own nation living peacefully on its own. However, that all changed when the U.S. took over our nation illegally. When they took over, not only did they own our land, but they also used it to their advantage. For example, they brought immigrants to Hawai'i to work on the sugar cane plantations. This connects to my group's UN issue of deforestation. They had to clear land so that there would be space for plantations, which caused deforestation. Another example of the U.S. government is also mistreating our land by trying to put the TMT on Mauna Kea. Current Event Analysis - GlobalWhy facing our feelings is essential for tackling our climate crisis by Renée Lertzman Global Issue - July 7th, 2020 Summary The article talks about how we as humans have a major impact on climate change. This is because our choices affect the environment and how it reacts. For example, pollution and the materials we use and throw away, have made global warming go up because it is disturbing the atmosphere. The article also talks about how our feelings as individuals makes an impact. This is because however we care or feel for the environment and the world’s safety impacts our choices. These choices will determine the outcome of climate change. Geography Theme This article relates to the geography theme of human-environment interaction. This is because our choices affect our environment. As I mentioned before, our waste has a huge impact on climate change. When we make that choice between, reusable or non-reusable materials, it makes a difference. There are many choices that affect climate change, whether we realize it or not. Reaction I thought that this article is very eye-opening. This is because it doesn’t just talk about how our choices impact climate change. It also talked about how our feelings affect our choices which then affect the environment. This made me think on a deeper level about everyone’s and my individual choices that impact our globe. This has made me want to be more careful about making decisions that will contribute to the health and safety of our earth. Connections/Analysis I believe that this event connects to the World History theme of human-environment interaction. As I explained before, our choices impact the environment. More specifically, our feelings do as well. If you think about the deeper meaning of climate change, it is only changing because of what humans are doing to the planet. This is why the human-environment interaction is key to understanding climate change and how the environment reacts to us. Work Cited Lertzman, R. (2020, July 07). Why facing our feelings is essential for tackling our climate crisis. We are more westernized than ever. However, this doesn't mean that we just forget our past. We, as native Hawaiians, need to be able to balance the modern world with our history. For example, we may participate in modern activities such as sports, but it is important to practice our culture too, such as playing Makahiki games. With balance, we can live in the future while practicing our past. We also need to speak up in government or politics and not forget our rights as Hawaiian people. Otherwise, we will be ruled over and be disrespected. It is a privilege to go to Kamehameha schools. This is because we have so many resources to help us learn more about our Hawaiian culture. I believe that students should use this knowledge to help others to be educated as well. This way, we can all be leaders of Hawai'i. Kahiau Project, Digital Learning via Distance & Student Lāhui Leadership I would rate myself a 4/5 on my improvement of quality work throughout the course. I would rate myself a 5/5 for improvement in digital application because before this course I didn't really know how to use photoshop. I would rate myself a 5/5 on independence and self-organization/direction because this course has a lot of work and I completed every single assignment on time. I also believe that the work/learning was very valuable because I know more about history and that will be very valuable in the future. Something I felt was valuable was learning about WW1 and WW2 because they were 2 very important parts in history for everyone worldwide. Making connections to the events in history will help me in the future because it will relate to current events. The Kahiau Project has been very valuable because it has helped me made connections to a modern-day issue and helped me connect it to events in history. It also helped me figure out solutions to solve the issue. One thing I have learned in this class is that anyone can be a leader. In our first week, we learned about leadership traits and what it takes to be a leader. This made me realize that you don't have to change the world to be a leader. I also made the connection to Hawai'i and how we have the potential to control the future of Hawai'i.
