"ALTERNATIVE FUTURES: HEARING VOICES OF RESISTANCE BECOMING VOICES OF CHANGE FOR OUR LAHUI"
Part 1:
One good example of decolonization in history was when the founding fathers of America separated from Britain. When British people set sail to find new land and explore new areas for new materials, they found what was soon to be called America. Over the years spent there, Britain abused their power over the colonies and the colonies rebelled. They soon began to start a revolution and become their own nation, that nation was to be called the United States of America and it is home to where I live this day. This decolonization connects to us here in Hawaii because soon maybe one day if Hawaii, if able to sustain itself, we’ll be able to “decolonize” from America and be able to provide our own food for the people that live here. We may not be actually decolonizing from America but we are metaphorically decolonizing from the dependence on America giving us shipments everyday. This’ll also help us with another problem, pollution. Since the use of shipments wouldn’t be necessary, our lives of pollution free oceans could help our ecosystem and native wildlife drastically.
Part 2:
One negative example of a colonization that went wrong was the decolonization of Africa. Contributing to the factor of its ultimate demise were corrupt leaders, the little care that European power had for the nation, the tribal divisions and hatred between tribes, bad political legacies, and continued western meddling. For many of these reasons shown I can find that the decolonization of Africa is very similar to our situation right now with America. For example, Hawai’i had to deal with little care from the other powers; Hawai’i was shown little regard when annexed and taken over by America when literally told that they wouldn’t be taken over by America. Queen Liliuokalani was thrown into jail and we were forced to live life as if we were Americans, we were also treated horribly and much more. For those reasons our anger towards America grew and the only thing that they gave us was an apology. Another way that the decolonization of Africa can relate to Hawai’i is the continuation of western meddling. It is well known that America is known for exploring the globe and trying to take over, but the ways that they did it was inhumane and unethical. Like what I talked about in the last example, Hawai’i was illegally annexed and over the years we’ve taken a dependence on America and its shipments for our survival. This also relates to our kahiau project because the globalization of America spreading throughout the globe has created pounds of trash through the making of materials, etc. Throughout Africa’s many problems they’ve faced things that America hasn’t really had to deal with, and in my opinion the way that I think they would solve problems isn’t very well. I believe that when faced with a problem Africa would ask for help from another country, for example, America. With problems like poverty Africa has problems with that all the time, and their solution is to ask for help from other countries. Although it may help the problem in some ways, it also devalued the their currency and caused a dependence on those places.
Part 3:
The three topics that I chose to relate to the “pending fall of America” are Gandhi, Africa, and the Iron Curtain. The first one that I will talk about is Gandhi. Gandhi and his decolonization from Britain relates to our impending fall in four ways. The first way Gandhi relates to our situation right now is the fact that Gandhi brought a whole nation down, and we do have someone like that this day. The person that seems to be the biggest burden on our nation is our president, Donald Trump, Trump has been able to do so many negative things repeatedly to our nation over the two years that he’s been with us. The second reason is about Gandhi’s passion to stop racism. A big contributing factor of our impending doom was something relating to racism, and Galtung stated that as one of the main factors contributing to our fall. So if somehow we’re able to bring down an anchor on our nation that would help us a lot. The third reason is because Gandhi fought for what he believed. Although that thought process might be true, the thought process of Trump’s agreements with other nations isn’t directly helping us in a good way. He thinks that everything’s about him, he tries to put the nation first, and maybe that is a good idea, but the way he does it isn’t exactly what other nation like about him. The fourth reason our fall can be connected to Gandhi is about something every nation should learn; non-violence. A contributing factor that doesn’t only bring our nation down but brings the whole world down is war, war is the biggest problem that doesn't fix anything and nations always try to find ways to go into it. The second topic is about Africa and its independence/decolonization. Africa had many contributing factors to why it failed but a big reason why was because of its dictators. The dictators that they had were addicted to power and abused that is many ways. Another way Africa connects to our downfall is through people not caring, it may seem like a small reason but it means a lot. The nations that were supposed to support Africa didn’t seem to care too much and that is something that contributes to our own people not caring too much about our future. The third reason is a dependency, dependency on other nations to take care of you and Africa definitely showed that they couldn’t fend for themselves. The American Government right now is at about 6 trillion dollars in debt and the fact that we have to put a dependency on other nation for loans and much more makes us weak to the fact that we’re wasting so much money and things that we probably won’t need. The last reason we compare to Africa is because of our waste of money, although we have a good team of people that monitor our money sufficiently there are times where we can’t even depend on them to make the right decisions for our country. The last thing that I will relate to our fall is the iron curtain. The first reason is the fight between the two ideologies, communism and capitalism has been a debate for a while on which one is better and many people have their own opinion on that. But what would we have without that? We’d have peace, without the fight we wouldn’t even have to worry about it at all. The second reason how the iron curtain relates to our downfall is about the fact that some nations don’t forgive, there has been a tension between nations due to their past opinions and arguments. If Donald Trump doesn’t find it in himself to apologize to the people/nations/things that he offended we’ll have a lot of things against us just because of one person. The third reason is about communication, if we take a part of the globe out and generalize people in that area because of their leader and someone else asks who the bad guy in the person is we can only find that the person who put labels on someone they didn’t meet is in the wrong. Communication is key to keeping relationships and if we repeat history by ignoring someone who could be an ally then America could just be speeding up its own downfall. And finally the last reason why the iron curtain relates to America’s downfall is because of one simple thing, war. They think that war will solve problems, but if we look down in our past we can find that war only makes more war. It is history repeating itself. Donald Trump thinks that he can just engage wars or take down treaties because he doesn’t entirely agree with it, well he must come to realize that the world isn’t fair and he should find that what he’s doing isn’t exactly what anybody wants.

Economic Impacts
Capitalism is the idea that economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. And communism is a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. So ideas like this that can cause many problems that today’s society. This can cause things issues like poverty because when the two ideas clash this can cause war, and this war can lead to poverty. During war, the stock markets crash causing money to plummet. Making more and more people poor.
Although people can make the idea that Communism is a utopia because people can do whatever they want to do in life and not have to worry about what they’re getting paid is not fair in this kind of society. By nature humans are greedy, not in a bad way, but when we succeed and get that reward it makes us want to get that reward more, and the only way we can do that is with capitalism. Communism doesn’t help the people that work day to night because they get the same pay as someone like a waiter, on the other hand Capitalism supports the hard work and allows power to be held. It supports the people who work for their success rather than people, like in North Korea, who suffer because they can’t afford to make enough to survive.
Capitalism is based on private ownership of the means of production and on individual economic freedom. Most of the means of production, such as factories and businesses, are owned by private individuals and not by the government. In the developed world, capitalism did transform almost everyone into a wage laborer, but it also lifted them out of poverty and made them more prosperous than Marx could have imagined. However, in poverty-stricken Bolivia, Francis criticized “the mentality of profit at any price, with no concern for social exclusion or the destruction of nature,” along with “a crude and naive trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system.”.
Karl Marx was a born in Trier, Germany. He studied law and philosophy at a university. He became a German philosopher, economist, historian, sociologist, political theorist, journalist, and socialist revolutionary. His economic theory stated that “the value of a produced economic good can be measured objectively by the average number of labor-hours required to produce it. Marx says that he feels capitalism is merely a stepping stone for the progression of man. He stated that capital means “a social, economic relation” between people, not people and things.
As private businesses have the means of economic freedom, which means they can do what they want. Since there was a war, that means there was a surge of war needs. This kind of mass production just creates pollution and that pollution finds its way to the ocean, which affects the whole entire world. Another good example of this being shown was during the cold war when nations would test bombs or when America bombed Bikini Atoll, that kind of radiation goes throughout the ocean and makes its way everywhere around the world.

Impacts on Modern Warfare - World History
Some of the effects of Modern Warfare on our Kahiau project has produced a lot of trash. And a lot of the trash ends up in the waters. Also when the US tested their nuclear warheads in the Pacific it affected a lot of people and caused a lot of damage. It made the water and the land radioactive. With the water infected a lot of the marine life has been killed or deformed. With the use of warheads, a lot of trash has been produced from the cleanup and those that have been affected. The amount of trash that has been produced has affected the surrounding water. And marine life that has not been killed by the nuclear testing have been killed by the trash that is in the water.
In relation to military impacts in Hawaii, militarism and colonialism have worked hand in hand to shape modern Hawaii. Militarism in Hawaii is the product of “manifest destiny” which is the US expansion into the Pacific and Caribbean in the nineteenth-century caused by the racist ideology. Due to the geopolitical importance of our position, the Hawaiian kingdom was overthrown by the US military in order to make it the centerpiece of itʻs military strategy. Since and prior to this, militarism has distorted cultural practices and the political environment of our kingdom.
The media has portrayed the military as they “only do good” it never talks about the harmful things that they have done. They mostly talk about how the military has stopped a lot of horrible things from happening in other countries, and all of that is a good thing. But they need to inform the people of the bad things that they have done if they are afraid of telling us the truth what does that say about them. To us that says that they are ashamed of their actions and are afraid of facing their problems head-on. It also says that they don’t like to take responsibility for their actions, which shows that they aren’t as good as the media portrays them to be.
There are many reasons why the military presence in Hawai’i is so high, but the most important ones include Pearl Harbor, our ability to hold all biomes in the world, and that we are the border of the US. Pearl Harbor was a significant event in history and was the main reason we joined the war against Germany. Since we don’t want a repeat in history, the US learned from this and bumped our military up to be at least 8% of Hawaii's population in 1988-2010. Another reason why military presence is so high in Hawai’i is because our islands contain all of the biomes needed for necessary military training and military experiments. The last reason is that we are the farthest point away from U S. We are the border and since we are “part” of America the essence of our safety is on America’s hands.
Within the state of Hawaii, there are a total of eight military bases. These are the Marine Corps Base, Camp H. M. Smith, Fort Shafter, Schofield Barracks, Wheeler Army Airfield, Tripler Army Medical Center, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, and Hickam Air Force Base. When the total landmass of the bases is put together, it adds up to about 230,280 acres of land. The use of property the U.S. military uses is 50% of Hawaii which has caused an uproar in Hawaiian activists. When the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom took place, the U.S. took control over Pearl Harbor. This has eliminated our access to Pearl Harbor. Originally, we would use this once considered sacred place as a food source. Due to the U.S.’s impact, we no longer are able to have that privilege.

Colonization
Colonization is the action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area. And imperialization is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. Finally globalization the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale. Colonization and imperialization are working together to enforce or influence other countries making them think that they need something from other countries. Which is basically globalization. We have talked about how globalization has affected our home today. Things like plastic and fast food. These are things that a lot of people rely on daily. Many people go to fast food places because it is easy for them to get there food and go, but those fast food places are taking over local businesses which are damaging our culture.
A global non-European example of colonization is in Australia. In 1788, the 18th century, Britain seized the continent we know as Australia and settled it as a penal colony. In other words, the British used Australia as a remote prison for prisoners so they could serve time in isolation. In addition to the established penal colony, British imperialism added a semi-peasant colony to maintain itʻs inhabitants. Over the remaining part of the 18th century and throughout the 19th century (and indeed to the present day) the native people of Australia have been ruthlessly pushed aside as capitalism has developed. One of the methods the British used to instate imperialism was forceful methods including: shooting, starving, etc. In addition to this method of establishing imperialism, they also used other ways such as assimilation and equal rights.
The first sign of globalization shown in Hawaii is in Waikiki, due to tourism and diverse cultures we’ve had to expand our diverse language to asian cultures which will provide an easier time for our tourists when visiting our beautiful island. This kind of stuff is what we’re born with so we’re used to it when something like that is very unnatural. Another problem that we have is when in homogenization. A good example of this is when we have local restaurants being replaced by recognizable franchises like McDonalds, Jack in the Box, KFC, Starbucks, etc. It makes places like Waianae become more like Hawai’i Kai in a recognizable sense that these places are taking what makes a certain place special into some kind of city. Bringing it back to tourism we have a lot of problems with that as well. The effect that tourism on our small island is massive and we depend on it so much that without tourism, our island would slowly decline into almost nothing. Out of the many effects globalization has had on us another one that we don’t think about a lot is gas. Saudi Arabia, one of the biggest oil suppliers in the world, and many other countries have given us low prices on gas which allows us to sell it for cheap. This kind of action makes places like 7-11 because they have to sell their gas at a lower price which makes their profit close to none.
Within the modern Hawaiʻi that we live in, it is a completely different picture than what we saw in the past. Through colonization and imperialism, Hawaii has reached globalization. As we stated before, there is much tourism in Hawaiʻi but more specifically in Waikiki. As the tourism increases our state continues to broaden our understanding of other languages. This is a part of globalization because it is also causing us to increase the number of buildings for the attraction of tourists such as hotels, malls, and more. Through this process, the state of Hawaiʻi is interacting more and more on an international scale. Another way Hawaiʻi is going through globalization is through imperialization. In the previous paragraph we speak of big food chains coming to Hawaiʻi. These companies coming here affect the local businesses that keep our money in our community. Due to these companies we are becoming greatly impacted and affected by the different continental things.

United Nations
The name “United Nations” was originally used on January 1st, 1942, by the United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the Declaration by United Nations during the Second World War, when representatives of 26 nations pledged their governments continuous fight against the Axis Powers. Later, in 1945 representatives of 50 countries met in San Francisco at the United Nations Conference on International Organization to draw up the United Nations Charter. The Charter was then signed on June 26th, 1945, by the representatives of the 50 countries, later to become 51 after Poland signed becoming the original 51 member states. Due to the powers vested in the Charter drawn up as well as its unique character international character, the United Nations handles issues confronting humanity in the 21st century. Some of these issues being peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, etc. In addition to this, the UN also allow their members to express their views on the other bodies and committees by providing a forum. The organization has become a mechanism for governments to work together in solving global problems.
The number one goal we strive for is that everyone decreases water pollution. And the UN has the same goal, water pollution is a very serious problem, soon we may not even be able to swim in our oceans because of hazardous materials in our oceans. This is UN’s goal #14. A very similar goal to goal #14 is goal #15, Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss. They do not want deforestation to be a thing, but it is. This goal is for the betterment of humanity because forests provide a lot of the oxygen that we breathe today. Goal #6 is also very similar to goal #14. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. This goal wants to provide necessities that we as humans need to survive. This is for the betterment of humanity because we should take care of each other and this is the way to do it. And by making the water clean it will help everyone.
Goal #14 is a goal to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.” What are we without our beautiful beaches? What are we without people bathing in the sun on the beach? Our group strives to protect our native environment and produce a healthier place for people, animals, and plants to live in our ocean. The reason that this connects to us is because it talks about our number one problem, pollution. Pollution is probably the biggest factor when mentioning problems found in the ocean. It affects our land, it affects our habitat, and it affects our wildlife. But what do we do? Nothing. So what we try to do as a group is make our ecosystem better by doing that small contribution in our community. Our small contribution can drastically affect others, but no one takes that time out of their day to try and make that change. So that is why goal #14 a goal to conserve and sustainably use our oceans connects to what we want to be changed inside of our small island.
In the city of Johannesburg, South Africa, there are many small countryside areas containing much pollution. These places are on the outer part of the city. Due to the pollution that has been done, the people within these areas rely on the Vaal Dam for their water. The towns along with Johannesburg are to blame for this pollution that is contaminating their water. The water contaminated with bacteria and parasites causing the people who drink of this water to become ill. More than 8,000 people who live near the dam have been affected negatively by the water. Unfortunately, this is becoming a bigger problem due to the widespread distribution of the water. Although this situation is terrible, it is being treated. The water that is contaminated is being put through a system in which it is cleaned. This is addressing the polluted water problem and supplying people with clean drinking water.

Basic Info
Many water bodies near urban areas (cities and towns) are highly polluted. This is the result of both garbage dumped by individuals and dangerous chemicals legally or illegally dumped by manufacturing industries, health centers, schools, and marketplaces. The main problem caused by water pollution is that it kills organisms that depend on these water bodies. Dead fish, crabs, birds and seagulls, dolphins, and many other animals often wind up on beaches, killed by pollutants in their habitat.
In a global approach, there are a lot of problems given to us that shows water pollution is on the rise. So far in the past three decades, there has been a 10%-15% increase of nitrogen in coastal ecosystems. Nitrogen and phosphorus are the most prevalent due to eutrophication, which impairs beneficial uses of water. Every day 2 million tons of sewage and industrial and agricultural waste are put in the world’s water, and the wastewater produced annually is six times more water than in all the rivers in the world.
In some local approach, Kamilo Beach, also nicknamed “Trash Beach”, is home to the dirtiest beach on Earth. Naʻahelu, Hawaiʻi is home to this dirty beach where people would most likely never swim. In fact, 90% of its garbage is all plastic which is why people in Hawaiʻi should crack down on its usage. But it is also found that most of its garbage is from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is roughly the size of Texas. Millions of colorful plastic pieces are found inside the sand which can make this beach terribly depressing. Luckily people are taking action on this problem and have started to clean the beach up. The Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund picked up roughly 15,000 pounds of trash in April 2017.

Here in Hawaiʻi we have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. From the South shores of Kauaʻi to the North of Hawaiʻi island our beaches are beautiful, except some of them are polluted with trash.
Summary:
Every year The Great Garbage Patch continues to grow bigger and bigger until it grows too big, we need to do something now.
Nonprofit Organization
The nonprofit organization our group decided to work with for this Kahiau project is the Mālama Learning center. The vision that the Mālama Learning Center had when creating their organization was to educate the West Oʻahu region about art, science, conservation, and weather in order to reconnect with their community and ʻāina. One of the ways that the Mālama Learning Center is able to reach an audience is by partnering with teachers and assisting them in lesson plans to educate their students about their communities and the kuleana that comes with living there. Their inspiration comes from wanting to leave Hawaii as a place that is worthy of future generations to inhabit and, most importantly, enjoy. Although this is a very common thought and goal, it is becoming noticeably more difficult to manifest for Mālama Learning Center, causing them to partner with Mālama Hawaiʻi to become a living laboratory of understanding for ways to care for our island and, in turn, ourselves as Hawaiians.
Within the islands of Hawaii, there lies Kamilo Beach, one of the dirtiest beaches in the world. It is sometimes it is referred to as “Plastic Beach” due to the large amounts of debris that gather on the sand and in the water. Things such as hair brushes, fishing nets, cigarette lighters, discarded bottles, and more have been found on the beach. Thanks to the Hawaii Wildlife Fund, over the course of a few months, they were able to gather 15,000 pounds of trash consisting of nets and fishing lines. An estimate of 8 million metric tons of discarded plastics appears in the ocean every year. According to the DLNR, over 20,000 pieces of debris have been found.
The Mālama learning center is a non-profit organization that brings art, science, conservation, and culture to promote sustainable living in Hawaiʻi. The Mālama Learning center is located in West Oʻahu in the city of Kapolei. They provide primary service from Waipahu through Waianae. They MLC tries to involve students and adults so that they can promote the idea of sustainable living. They are trying to unify schools, residents, and businesses around them to share the ethic of caring and conservation. The reason the MLC is doing this is that they care about the land that they live on. The MLC believes that Hawaiʻi can be self-sustaining. And they also want where we live to be restored to its natural. They believe that this can be done by educating others and hoping that the message spreads. By educating others information can be spread and used to its fullest potential. Very similar to the quote “You give a poor man a fish and you feed him for a day. You teach him to fish and you an occupation that will feed him for a lifetime.” (Chinese proverb.)
For our project, we got to work with a Kamehameha alumni, Aunty Chelsea, who had a mindset to give back by supporting our ecosystem with the removal of one big problem; trash. Malama Learning Center, our nonprofit organization, connects to what we’re trying to do because their mission is to teach and inspire communities to create healthy living environments. So that is what we strived for, to help others and our ecosystem by removing invasive plants and trash that could potentially cause harm to natural plants or kill off endangered animals like the Hawaiian monk seal. When we learned about MLC, their cause and mission was something that we were looking for because what we saw is the same kind of hope that we want to be put into others.
