The leaders I chose to do for the Empire Project was George Helm and Fyodor III. George Helm, POK activist, musician, and a role model in Hawaiʻi. Fyodor III, Tsar of Russia in the year 1605. Fyodor was born in 1589 in Moscow, Russia to his parents, Boris Godunov and Maria Skuratova- Belskaya. During his short rule, he managed to cause ruckus and was overthrown. “His rule was immediately challenged...by the first False Dmitry, a pretender to the throne, who, claiming to be the son of Ivan IV the Terrible...the legitimate heir to the throne, had invaded Russia in October 1604 in an effort to overthrow Boris Godunov. After Fyodor’s military commander shifted his support to the pretender, Fyodor’s mother tried to take power and control the situation. Her action, however, aroused the hostility of the boyars (members of the powerful Russian aristocracy), who provoked a Moscow mob to riot and to murder Fyodor and his mother; immediately afterward the first False Dmitry entered Moscow and assumed the throne of Russia”. Fyodor expressed the leadership trait of koa, courage. George Jarett Helm Jr. was a Native Hawaiian Activist, creator of POK, and hawaiian musician. Born March 23, 1950 on the island of Molokaʻi and mysteriously disappeared on March 7, 1977 on a voyage to Kahoʻolawe. George Helm impacted Hawaiʻi in a way of expressing change. As one of the leaders of the People of Kahoʻolawe, he stood up for the people of Hawaiʻi in the war against the testing of bombs on Kahoʻolawe. He wanted to prove and build a community on Kahoʻolawe to oppose the bombings. He was a sign and leader of advocacy in Hawaiʻi. He represented the traits of koa, kuleana, and being he ʻōpū aliʻi.

The leaders I chose to do my Ileader project were Bajal Chan Kawili, one of the first rulers of Dos Pilas, and Walter Ritte, a Hawaiian activist. Walter Ritte was born on April 12, 1945 and is 76 today. No one knows when Bajal Kawili was born or when he died but it was around 800-1000 AD. I choose the words Ho’okipa (hospitality), Ho’omanawanui (patience), and Koa (brave/warrior) to describe my leaders because Walter ritte was one of the first people on the Mauna and he was helping others get up there and protest, he waited and slept on the Mauna for a couple days, and he fought with the rest of the Kanaka on the Mauna. For Bajal Kawaili, he was welcoming to all travelers and wanted to make his territory as good as possible, he was in a war with people that wanted his land and he waited to see if there was a non-violent outcome, and he fought when he needed to, however it lead to his death and the turnover of land. The icons I chose for Walter Ritte was his organization and pictures of him in speeches or etc and for Bajal Kawili, I choose pictures of newer pictures of where Dos Pilas is today.

The empire I did was the Mayan empire that was in the geographical area of what is now known as southern mexico, guatemala, northern Belize and western Honduras. The leader I chose to research is Jasaw K’awill. Jasaw’s reign was not only great but was very impactful for the empire at the time. K'awiil was the 26th ruler in the royal line at Tikal which began with the dynastic founder Yax Ehb' Xook. He ruled for 52 years from 682 to 734 and was responsible for regaining power of Tikal after the Hiatus Period. Jasaw Chan Kʼawiil's reign came at the end of a 130-year-long hiatus in Tikal's historical record, and his defeat of the rival Maya city of Calakmul in 695 is seen to represent a resurgence in the strength and influence of Tikal this was put for the descriptive word of conqueror. WIth this I chose the Icon of the Tikal temple which was his royal tomb which was a giant building for Jasaw leading into the innovative description.
