Colonization could play a major role in the impact or set up of my Kahiau project. Some of the impacts of colonization were Human rights violation, poverty, and loss of land for cash crops. An example would be Africa as we could see many of these impacts affect them for centuries. Europeans also did not want to modernize or industrialize the continent leaving it in an impoverished state which means it impacts my Kahiau project of clean and affordable energy. The living conditions still are very bad to the point where most people can't even afford electricity. These impacts left from those long gone still affect and hurt the people today who are trying to help these people and get them out of the post-poor colonial states. These impacts of Colonization and Imperialism can really impact our points of view of culture and impact language and activism within our state. We can see the ways how people of the past used to be forced to take our lands back in 1893. Also we can see how Christian Missionaries were able to force their religion onto the leper by their isolation. The US military is another way we can see the impacts of imperialization as they have most of the land in the state to use for their purposes which destroy sacred land. This can both fuel us in our ways to try bring these current issues up with the state or deter us as there has been so much damage already that it seems hopeless to try and undo the wrongs. Even though the topics of the Industrial Revolution and French Revolution are from a bygone era, we can see that the issues formed from them are very similar to what is happening right now in our current era. In the Industrial Revolution, it allowed for great innovations, yes, but it also caused more major problems as well as it gave poor working conditions and minimum pay for the workers. The French Revolution was the cause of poor treatment and neglect to the lower class and commoners of the French Empire. This neglect led to violent protests and eventually a revolution that overthrew the current government at the time. These topics although from a different era have problems that we even see at home in our own state. In the past 3 years or more Native Hawaiians have been seen on the mage stage due to neglect of the management of sacred lands by the state for the sake of innovations in science. This way of thinking has caused unrest within major communities of Hawaiian descent. Also with the state's major expensive livings it is hard for locals to just scrape by with decent pay making poverty a major issue in our modernized society. It also affects my Kahiau Project of Clean and Affordable energy because if we find a solution to clean affordable energy the jobs to work those solution must have good pay and working conditions for the workers as well as having good impact to those who live near the solutions. I think that we can use these as stepping stones to help us find a solution that has plighted our people for a very long time. We can use the information that people of other regions have dealt with and find our own way to solve the issue. Then we can add in our own values of culture and ideals like how the protests in recent years have been in a more knowledgeable way and non-violent to try and find a solution. An example could be to gain more power and influence within the state government so that we can have more control over what goes within our lands. However, we must be mindful that we are not the only ethnicity within our lands now and must find a way to also compromise and co-exist with the others as well so that we can all benefit from our solutions. It also takes the forms of many things from music to paintings to even writing. One example I could use was a guest speaker who came to our class on Monday. Her name was Dania and she was a Syrian-American who used poetry to get her concerns and opinions about current issues. It was an interesting experience to get to know her experiences as a poet activist and how she uses this art to bring a voice to her minority in the country. The Poem I created I wanted to focus on the perspective of the wind. I chose the wind to be the perspective of the poem to show the world from its point of view and how it sees man hurting the world and those that live in it instead of using itself for help. This is because as you know, we can use the wind as a clean energy source but my main focus was show how most people refuse that and instead use the alternative source of fossil fuels. My point was to bring awareness to more people to consider converting to clean energy sources instead of using fossil fuels.
The most important connection between World History and current event advocacy is how these subjects relate to each other. The actions of the past can affect current events that are happening today. The events that are taking place now can relate to what is happening today. An example of this is the Ku Kia’i Mauna protest that happened due to the neglection of Native Hawaiian opinions about Mauna Kea and how it should be treated. The most important idea I got from the Rock Your World curriculum and the guest speaker is that anyone can voice their opinions. These people from the program are telling me that anyone can come together and bring change to their communities. It does not matter if it is big or small, all that matters is that there is an issue and it needs to be solved. |
