This project helped me become an action researcher and global citizen because it shows traits of leadership and taking action. We did a blood drive because blood is a necescity on our island. When you take action, you are becoming a global citizen. A global citizen is someone that wants to help and thatʻs what me and my group are doing. This is connected to pono leadership because anyone can be a leader. You donʻt have to be elected or have royal blood, but you can just be a regular person and taking action in a problem and being a role model. Our perspectives are different in the research process because we learned a lot more about the blood that they need and how some bloods are rarer than others. Also, we learn about how blood is scarce on this island and we need about 30 people to donate blood everyday. My predictions was that it would be more harder than it actually was because everything was already set up and all we had to do was give patients food and water. For a long term plan, we try to let everyone to know. We want to keep informing people and to get new people to donate blood because we need at least 30 people to donate everyday.

First, we set up a sign outside of the news building so that everyone driving and walking past by could see it. In order for this blood drive to happen, Devinʻs Mom had arranged it at her work place on level 4 of the Hawaii News Now building. We helped remove the tables out of the room so that the Nurses could lay down the beds for the patients. We bought snacks and drinks for the patients. Also, we put up flyers around the news building so that people would know where we were holding the blood drive.
We helped prepare the participants for their transaction of blood by talking to them and giving them what they needed. After they finished giving blood, they had to wait and rest for a little because of the side effects they might have from losing blood. So, we each interviewed a person on why they were doing this and donating blood. One of the people that I interviewed told me that she was donating blood because sho once got into a very bad accident, and she was saved from blood that was donated. So, she said that she is donating it because she would want and had someone do the same for her.
In order to get people to donate blood, we had to go each store around the News building and give them flyers with the blood bank manager. We gave each restaurant a stack of Blood bank flyers so that they could give flyers to their customers. We also went to the Fire station near the building. We asked if we could put up flyers on their flag pole but they said we needed some type of license in order to do that so we just gave them flyers.
We have finished the blood bank and we are now evaluating how many people donated blood and how many of them actually signed up to donate. We also had some people walk in and donate even though they never sign up because the seen our flyers around the building. Blog #5
Next week, we are going to the blood bank of hawaii so we can see how they store their blood. we are going on a tour around the bank to see the process of the blood. Since there is different types of blood, they have to have a certain supply of each kind because some are rarer than others. |
