Colonization had a large impact on gender equality and breaking but also enhancing those “gender norms”. In our hawaiian history, men and women both shared different (at times separated) kuleana. We can also see this pattern when looking into different parts of history and different cultures. The colonization of Hawaiʻi brought not only different opportunities for women but also affected how the women were treated for these foreign people with new customs being introduced. The mana women of hawaiʻi were given all kinds of kuleana and the impact the english women had on them were both similar and different to what they knew. This history and this impact on our culture here hurt our modern efforts because they were “normal” and they were what everyone knew/lived by. Although, they also help our efforts to meet these challenges because we know now how to go about these ways and women have a voice to speak out about these problems. Imperialism continues to take a toll on our culture and how we see things in history because the way history is written. We learn about our history and what happened from the perspective from the “winner” or the “good guy” and we donʻt necessarily learn things from the other perspectives. Therefore, when we learn about our past culture issues and the things that really took a toll on our language, culture, etc. we don't learn the root of the problem/what caused it, we learn about it from the “good guys'' tale. From this, it now affects us as hawaiians and our culture today because we have those missing gaps and that unsolid hawaiian foundation due to these events. For example, the language ban. Our own language was banned from being spoken in schools by students because they wanted to make english the top priority. Although, that resulted in tons and tons of native hawaiians not knowing how to even properly speak their native language. Another example is the entering of the missionaries. We learn the stories of the missionaries coming to “improve” our economy and our land when they also took a giant toll on our native populations autonomy. Therefore, this does help us to navigate a solution from these problems because we can learn from these past events and not make the same mistakes twice. Apa citations:

During the Industrial age and the Revolutions, the roles of men and women were similar to what we seen in other historica events. As usual, men were the “heads” of the household where women had their own responsibilities to upkeep. Although, the industrialization and industrial revolution “redefined the roles of women” in the household. Many opportunities opened up for women as well as “new opportunities for them as industrial wage earners”. This set up our Kahiau Project topic because we still see this common occurrence today. Women have many more opportunities but there is still the stigma separating them from men as we see in past history. Understanding these things in history can help us to prepare for the future. Looking back at the different cultural events that we have studied we can see a common theme of women being put in a “box” and following the same “lines”. Connecting to Hawaiʻi and knowing all of those cultural aspects will help us to look and navigate solutions to our problems here. In our hawaiian culture, women were also given their own kuleana, different from the men. Men and women were also separated in some cases but they also do have similar tasks. Coming back to present day Hawaiʻi, we can learn from these things and navigate solutions by doing the opposite of what the “gender norms” state. Citations

This is also used today in our own society. With all the guest speakers that had presented to us this past semester, I learned that different art forms are used all around the world to showcase those different events and historical/modern figures that really play a big role today. Just like in history where they use paintings to showcase that specific event or person, today in our modern society people utilize so many other forms of art to advocate. We can see that in protests/movements, signs and art pieces are made to bring attention to causes or videography is used to bring life and creativity to situations. When learning about other peopleʻs outlets we have seen cartoon work to large murals to phototograohy all around the world. Art can by used by incorporating different elements and portraying them in a different way. My project topic is Gender Equality. I created my poem, “The Injustice is Real” to talk about the issues women face today in our society. My poem highlights the unfairness of women being overlooked all of the time and not getting that same treatment they deserve. In the piece, one specific line that stood out to me was “Some may say the future is female. / But why wait?/ The future is now.” I feel this line really points out that women are so powerful that they should not be heald in a box nor treated with any less respect than men get treated with. The next generation of Female leaders cant wait until the future, it is time for them to stand up now and lead NOW. I am very passionate about my poem and it overall just reflects that this is a serious topic and people need to learn that the injustice is serious. Citations:

The most important connection between World History and current event advocacy is connecting the past to the present. When looking at current events today, we can see both similarities and differences to the problems in our current times compared to the events that already happened. Observing and learning about our history can help us to understand how things came to be and how we can go about it or what the future of it could be. We can learn many lessons from history that could possibly allow us to solve problems nowadays with modern solutions. For example, we look at the events like the civil rights movement (1954-1968) and see how the current BLM protests/movements are similar. Therefore, taking what we know about the first black movement we can use that knowledge to not only build our understanding but also develop those ideas for new and modern solutions. The most impactful idea that I have gained, is to use our ideas and create modern solutions to modern problems. When learning about the different creative outlets that people utilize, it made me realize that there are so many different ways to bring advocacy to something whether it is through art, media, etc. In our current times, we can see that people from all around use things like drawing, film making, protests, cartoon images, etc. to communicate to kids and adults about the problems. In this generation, children are way more familiar with technology and using those media outlets to communicate. The use of media can be important to communicate because using social media, videos, articles, can be more efficient and easier for students to understand and comprehend. Also, media is a humangeous part of our society today wether itʻs social media, tv, commercials, youtube videos, etc. those outlets are key to expressing your ideas and using your voice because itʻs what the people will see/understand. When looking at the goods being exchanged, the products like silk were manufactured by women for they worked in the process of creating these goods. Although, women were also traders who traveled with the men on their journey and took part in exchanging for goods like spices, cinnamon, peppercorn, etc. Another kuleana the women had was to take care of ones family along the journey and keep the household together while either at home or traveling with their husbands. From the East to West route, Silk was one of the most valued items being traded. Although, the manufacturing of the silk was done by the women. The men would take care of the silk production process regarding the animal and the women would carry the responsibility of feeding the worms and operating the treadle loom that would create the silk material. This relates to our UN Goal of equality because we can see that women also took part in the journey and acquired the same job as a man. The women had equal responsibilities that they also needed to take care of during this time. Mark, J. J. (2021, February 22). Silk Road.
