From Evolution to Revolution
Compare & Contrast the "native" traditions of foraging/Hunter-Gathering (give examples from native people you are familiar with: Hawaiians, Alaskans, Indians, or even Molly and Mudu in FRPF) AND the transition to settled Agricultural societies (give examples from modern society) - what are the pros and cons of each regarding being independent & sustainable.
The majority of hunter-gatherers participated in hunting and fishing animals. They also foraged for nutrients like honey. This also benefited them because they didn’t have to travel or move around as much. They found a way to be sustainable and live a comfortable life. Some examples of traditions of foraging/Hunter-Gathering here in Hawaiʻi are fishing and our agriculture system. Our kūpuna were great thinkers and created the Ahupuaʻa system which guided our self-sustainability. A pro of being independent and sustainable is having the ability to survive by yourself, and not relying on others to provide for you. A con is that you are losing out on that help and if the worse case comes, you are kind of stuck and that’s why it’s important to always have backup plans. And for modern societies they are not completely in touch with their environment. Like how more tribal societies are. But for modern societies it is a lot more easier in most aspects one big one is fresh water and how it is mostly very accessible. Then there is also better healthcare for certain things such as a broken leg. Then there is how there is a lot of knowledge because of how the world is connected because of technology. And now for the cons of this one major one is overpopulation. Other things that fall under overpopulation is the big deforestation to make land for more buildings.
Why is it so important to understand the shift from the native skill set of being "hunter/gatherer & farming our own food"? How does this understanding help us to balance & navigate the push to buy what we need from the store (dependent on outsourcing being brought in from Matson) and getting a good education to get a good career and how all of this supports the needs of our ʻohana in 2020/2021 and beyond?
It is important to understand the shift from the native skill set of being able to hunt, gather, or farm our own food in a cultural and civilized way. Understanding this and the shift helps us to navigate how we live and how we get what we need. The overall shift happened when our culture started to fade away and when things started to civilize. When foreigners came to Hawaiʻi and over through our queen, our culture started to fade since then and we started to become more modern and civilized. As time went on our farms, loʻi, and fish ponds started to disappear and were taken over my homes and buildings. With this big change, it made us rely on Matson and outsourcing more than we had before. So understanding the shift from ancient Hawaiian times to modernization will help you understand the balance and navigation on why we buy what we need. Before the arrival of Captain Cook, Hawaii did not have these restrictions and laws in the land and ocean that we have today. They had vast knowledge of the ocean and how to hunt and knew where the good spots were. For example, Waikiki was a major fishing ground and had loʻi and fishponds as well. Nowadays, Waikiki is super restricted and all around the island, some fishing grounds are off-limits. They also limit how much and how big of a fish we can take. For land restrictions, there are property lines and properties restricting access to hunting grounds. Not to mention lots of the land being built on destroying animals' homes. Over time the number of fishermen and hunters decreased because of the people relying more on the mainland and the imported food which costs money instead of going out hunting and fishing which is free. The issue of poverty and hunger relates to this because with us relying on ajn outside source that we need to pay for with money as well as a system which is literally made against natives. This causes poverty because the natives can't rely on what they used to due to lack of knowledge and all of the restrictions nowadays. They cannot go out to hunt for themselves as Hawaiians used to, now they have to work a 9 to 5 job providing for their families and either barely making it by or living on the streets.
What is your Kahiau topic - How does the opposing ideas of "native traditions of foraging/hunter-gathering" and "modern Agricultural societies" impact your Kahiau topic?
Our Kahiau topic is based on poverty in Hawaiʻi and how it is affecting our economy. The opposing ideas of native traditions of foraging/hunter-gathering impact our topic because that is what people in poverty rely on. They have to find ways to survive and do exactly what foragers did. They don’t have all the resources and necessities that most of us are blessed with. Modern agricultural societies can impact our topic in a positive way if we do it right. We can use those resources to help the people of Hawaiʻi who are less fortunate. If it’s feeding them or using the benefits of agriculture to help them in any way possible, big or small. Any little gesture will help those who need the help and are willing to accept the help.

Dark Ages & Enlightenment
Given what we learned about Europeʻs Dark Ages, were other parts of the world experiencing their own "Dark Ages" as well? Why or why not? What made Europeʻs Dark ages so dark? Give examples.
The Dark Ages, also known as the Medieval period, was a tortuous time period for communities and society. A major factor was that there was stress in religion. There was also a fall in society due to people going missing and also dying. In the Christian West, and the Eastern and Western of the Roman Empire, Christianity was seriously guarded. One of the reasons for all of this starting is that barbarians were destroying knowledge and churches were outlawing reason as the means to knowledge. In addition, there was a lack of culture and advancing in Europe. This was not good for society because a lot of people depended on going to church for spiritual help and assistance. The “Dark Ages” also brought us Renaissance. There was also a stress on Latin literature and cultural development during this time.

How do the opposite ideas of religion vs culture as controlled by the church, contribute to this shift in mindset from Dark Ages to Enlightenment? Does this thinking impact your modern Kahiau issue at all? Why or why not?
Religion and culture are probably the 2 most important and known things in the world today. With so many countries comes many different religions and many different cultures. Every city or every state has different people, races, and beliefs. There are many different cultures and religions everywhere you go. But these things have changed over the years and as society advanced and as time passed. Churches had control over basically life during the Dark Ages. During this time religion and culture were kinda like the rulers of the world and church as well. Catholic religion and Christian Churches started to become powerful and the only religion accepted was Catholic. Also during this time there were only 3 cultures Germanic invaders, Christianity, and Islam. But as time went on and the Enlightenment happened, which changed the religion, cultures, and the churches. During the Enlightenment many Christians used this to support the benevolence of God. But many others went into another direction, into other religions. Other people also came up with the saying “Ghost in the Machine”, these people thought that God created the world and let it function. Although, religion changed society and culture also changed. The main thing was it was an intellectual and cultural movement in the eighteenth century that emphasized reason over superstition and science over blind faith. Many consider the Enlightenment a major turning point in Western civilization, an age of light replacing an age of darkness, which impacted todayʻs world of culture and religion. This way of thinking has definitely impacted my Kahiau issues especially in todayʻs world. With the way that society is today, poverty is a big issue in this world and is not really at the top of anybodyʻs priorities. But since the enlightenment and the new way of thinking, the mindset changed also caused poverty and can fix poverty. This is why the shift in mindset is important and impacted my Kahiau issue.

How do the events of Exploration and Exchanges that occur during the period of the Silk Roads impact your Kahiau Issue globally? How does it impact the local version of this issue? Give examples
The way that the events of the Exploration and Exchanges that happened during the Silk Road that also impact our Kahiau issue. It affects our Kahiau issue by removing poverty in certain areas of the world that are connected to the trade roots. Because places along the trade roots would receive more traffic through their towns that were otherwise pore. But the Silk Road also left places in poverty because of how people exploited other people and the land. And ways this fits here in Hawaii is the sugar cane plantations when they were here. It was bad because of how the land was miss managed because the big industry only cared about the money that they could get. But at the same time It also brought more people on to the islands to work here but that could be a good or bad thing it just depends on you. But it also made Hawaii a more accepting place because of all the different cultures that are here in one place.

Does understanding history have value or contribute in finding solutions to our modern-day challenges? Why or why not?
Using what had already happened in the past has a lot of value today. We can use the lessons and information from the past to solve a deal with problems happening today. For example we can use information from the silk road and the Dark ages to see how people were driven into poverty and the solutions they had. For example in the Dark ages the poor were treated harshly and basically given no help at all by the government. Today the government has systems in place to help the poor and keep them with enough resources and food to stay alive unlike the other times. We also see how they got into poverty in the first place and today we have corrected most of those causes. Also with poverty today we can look to the past to find solutions and/or come up with new solutions based on information from today and the past.

Competition for Resources in a Global Society
The “War to End all Wars” or World War 1 is really ironic. The war that was meant to end all wars caused many casualties and destroyed many homes and lives. After all of that they signed a peace treaty because both sides finally realized that they had lost so much and decided to end the war. However the conflict never really ended because there continued to be disagreements and everything they learned of what comes of war which is death and destruction went in one ear and flew out the other. The conflict and disagreements never ended with the war, humans tend to hold grudges and with all of what countries had lost, many people held grudges and were angry. That is what led to more wars and more death and destruction.

The agricultural revolution started in the 18th century but if this is the other one then it started a long time ago when things were really written down. But this was when there was great agricultural growth to provide food for people. The Scientific revolution began in 1543-1687. By the name alone this was a time of many scientific discoveries and methods. Then the Industrial revolution began in 1760 and ended in 1840. This was when most of the world went industrial and built factories almost everywhere. Then finally the age of Enlightenment which started in 1715 and ended in 1789. This was the time of philosophers.
These events that happened and that caused change donʻt make sense or justify why we would almost eliminate ourselves. During the Agricultural/Scientific/Industrial Revolutions many changes occurred to humans and especially during the Enlightenment change happened. We learned new things and were introduced to different things as well. With this new knowledge, the new resources, the change and evolution it does not make sense that humans would use these skills to eliminate us. Although it does make sense that humans used the new skills and discoveries to compete for resources to survive during the wars. Why would we use the same skills to eliminate ourselves? The World War and these events have affected poverty in many different ways that lead to poverty and are causing poverty.

There are many lessons to take away from what we learned about the World Wars and how the people and land were affected by the different choices and mistakes. This knowledge impacts the local version of this issue because Hawaiʻi will always be affected by the bombing of Pearl Harbor. From that point on, we also became an attraction and that caused our lands to forcefully go into the hands of foreigners. During the World Wars, technology was also being developed and new things were being tested. I feel like this is happening to Hawaiʻi today because there is the rail and so much money, effort, and time is being wasted. We, and our government especially, need to put our focus on the true problems.

Jennae Leleo-
As a future graduate of Kamehameha Schools, I understand that I have been blessed with so many opportunities that are once in a lifetime. And to best utilize these opportunities, I need to make sure that I advocate and I help support the problems that our people face daily. It is up to me and our generation to all do our part in saving our people and land. With what our ancestors and our sacred lands have went through and are still going through, we need to put an end to the suffering and we need to be the solution. We cannot depend on anybody or anything else other than ourselves. I know with the advantages we have as KS students and future alumni, we will always have a voice and it will be heard. So with that, we can use our different platforms to help our communities strive for health and wellness. |

Keola Lonetti-
All that I have learnt of my role is nothing other than being a helping hand in small ways because I ain't that great or known I am just there that is my role. For within the community it is the same thing I am just there that is how I know how to explain it.One of the best ways that I can use the teaching from the whole UN sustainability things is by. Of course using what was taught which was mostly stand up and speak up. Those were the things that I heard the most from the speakers that came in. But for the goose themselves the one that I want to see come true for my community that I live in is for there to be no poverty. Because I live in an old nabere hood that is past its prime. You just go down the street for a little while then you are in the old and rundown places. It is a recikl of the past for how it looks the building over there. But that is all that I could write for the topic at hand until the next question comes in. I will be a weight agen. |

Kamahao Umiamaka -
Over the school year I learned a lot about activism and the issues around the world and lots of issues here in Hawaii. I learned that my role in my own community is to speak up and address the issues I see and if its in my ability I can also help however I can. With the knowledge I gained from the rock your world speakers I can now advocate on the issues in my community and share a message with lots of people about the issues in my community. |

Cody Branco -
Ever since I came to Kamehameha I have learned new things from history to my role over the past years. I have learned my role in both my school community and my community in general. Both of these roles are similar in ways and I try to fill them. With such a big community, my role is just to spread awareness. As a teenager right now I donʻt have access to all of the resources, so my role is to just spread awareness. In both school and in my community I need to share about the issues that are going on and affecting us in different ways. With what I have learned this year about activism from all the guest speakers and all the lessons we have learned, I know that we can all make a change even if it is small. I learned how to advocate, I learned how to start small and work your way up, and how to share about the issues. With this knowledge I can advocate for the issues being discussed and make a change in both of the communities I live in. |
