The Industrial age and the revolutions because of it impacted my kahiau project topic because with capital, it created various classes amongst the people. With the class system, this caused people to be furious about the inequality amongst each other. Nowadays, money still affects our community and our societies. People feel more powerful when they possess more money in their pockets. With this "power" they feel it is okay to demean others and this is what causes outrages. This relates to my kahiau project topic because everyone we try to help are also feeling disconnected and they donʻt feel they have the power to be equal with others. |
Understanding all this history and understanding our own culture will help us to find solutions to our problems in Hawaii because we can build off of past knowledge and make it better in a sense. We can modify things of the past and make it so that we can solve our problems of today. One example of this is through medicine. When we feel ill or we just donʻt feel that good, we can look to the past and use any kinds of ointments or medicinal plants to help us fight the sickness. Another example is using what we can from the revolutions and the Industrial Age and make it better and make it more useful. We can build off of past knowledge during this time and learn what to do and what not to do when it comes to power and politics. |

What I learned about how art can be used to highlight various concerns is that you can convey so much through art. Itʻs like the saying goes: "a picture is worth a thousand words." When everyone comes together for 1 purpose and collaborate, they can make a huge difference. You can see so much symbolism in art and I think art can sometimes be better than speaking out because you can see a visual of whatʻs going on. By seeing something physical, you can connect to it on a deeper level and you can get a good sense of what is really going on. Art is not something uniform and same as everyone elseʻs. You convey your concerns and your purpose your own way and people see that through your art. Art can be anything you want it to be. Art is what you make of it, not what others tell you to do. |
My poem is all about my groupʻs advocacy topic of gender inequality. This topic actually does not just mean what gender you classify as, but also your sexuality. Nowadays, you can be anything you want and think anything you want. You can always find people who are like you, but at the same time, you can always find others who despise people like you. My poem covers this topic and it talks about how you can be whatever you want and how sometimes people still donʻt want to accept you. You make the choice. Although you do risk being ridiculed and hated by some... donʻt hide. Show your true yourself. Donʻt be afraid to be you. Nobody has to succumb to the pressure and feel like they have to be just like everyone else. Be the uniqueness that this world needs! |

I think the most important connection is that a lot of the current events nowadays are almost like backlashes or aftereffects of what people did in the past. One major thing is the BLM movement. In the past, many people advocated for black people to be treated equally. Some of these people include MLK, Rosa Parks, and Abe Lincoln who helped to abolish slavery. Black people used to be the minority and for some reason, history caught up and still yet, some people view black people as the minority. In the past, there was not much advocacy for black people equality but now many people are doing so and because of technology, we are able to spread the word to more parts of the world. We can really make the biggest difference and the biggest impact in our world today. |
The most impactful idea I got from the Rock Your World speakers is to not be afraid to advocate and speak out for what you believe in. You donʻt have to be scared to speak your opinion because there could be many others out there who feel the same way as you. You can spread the word for your issue through art, pictures, speech, social media, and more. If you donʻt spread awareness for your cause, it may never be spoken up about. You have to take action and be the change that the world needs. If we do not cower in fear of speaking up and actually speak out, change can be made and you may find that some other people will join in. |

The events of the Silk Road, Exploration, Expansion, and the Enlightenment connect to our UN Goal because back then, people were in a ranked economy. If you were more rich, you were known as someone who was higher ranking and the poorer people were seen as low ranking. The Silk Road was the thing that allowed all people to gain and trade amongst others equally. With our UN Goal or gender equality, it connects because now and even in the past, genders were not treated equally. It wasnʻt until someone decided they were going to make a change that there was a little more equality amongst genders. However, some people still donʻt agree with this and thatʻs why there is still gender inequality in our world today. |
The events of the Silk Road especially, gave people the chance to meet others and gain more and more. It was something that was able to bring even the slightest bit of equality for everyone because everyone had the chance to trade and gain more wealth and resources. Nowadays, we have most of the men and women equality problems under control but now more are being introduced. Now we have more genders and sexualities than previously before. With the introducing of more genders and sexualities, we are having more problems which are kind of relative to how it used to be when it was just 2 genders. Even though more problems are being brought, many people are trying to do their best in bringing equality for all people no matter gender or sexuality. |
