Colonization sets up poverty since colonization is rooted in capitalism which is the system that causes poverty. In addition to that

During the Industrial Revolution there were inventions that essentially sped up certain processes and made it cost less resources and effort to do things. Which meant that the owners of factories, mills, and mines had their output doubled with little to no effort. This created class stratification which further separated the working class from the rich industrialists. Which can be connected to Amazon. The working class being, well, the working class, the warehouse employees at Amazon and the rich industrialist being Jeff Bezos (or whoever the CEO is since he's stepping down) who just accumulates billions of dollars, furthering the gap between the impoverished workers and capitalist mega-corporation. The French Revolution also happened during the Industrial Revolution and its a good example of poverty and how its created. So the peasants in France were extremely poor and they'd have to pay these extremely messed up taxes to the king, aristocrats and literally just anyone who demanded money from them. Which that itself would make anyone mad but the people saw that King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette spent all of the money on themselves which got the people extremely angry. Which shows that those in power and those with the money don't care about the poor/working class as long as they get what they want (which will most likely be more money). This problem persists today and perpetuates poverty and homelessness. Like the minimum wage in America is so low, the people in charge don't want to change that because then they won't be making as much money. People should be able to live off of minimum wage, live as in have access to shelter, clothes, food, water and so much more. I think the most important connection between World History and current events would be the fact that History repeats itself. Like BLM is connected to slavery. (kind of, idk how to explain this without it sounding weird) Although POC are no longer owned as slaves, they are still beaten and abused, not by their owners, but the police. We even had this conversation 50-ish years ago with Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. Mankind never learns, and thus History repeats itself.
I really like the concept of “Even you can cause awareness and create change” that they keep pushing so much. This might just be an idealized version of it, but the thought that a normal person could change the world just feels nice. This affects how our generation will create solutions to problems, we’ll cause awareness and solve problems through creative activism. Using the Internet as a platform to connect with people all around the world who care. |
