I researched Native Hawaiian Activist, Walter Ritte. Along with Myan leader, Jasaw Chan Kʻawiil. Ritte was born on April 12, 1945 in Molokaʻi, HI. Kʻawiil was born in 682 AD and passed in 734 AD. Walter Ritte had a huge impact on the peservation of hawaiian lands and culture. He was at every Hawaiian protest and supports his community till this day. Jasaw Chan Kʻawiil was a great leader and warrior. He protected his people and fought for them. I chose Ritte because he's my uncle and I already knew a lot of information about him. I chose Kʻawiil because I think he realted to Rittte.
This can relate to my Project 911 challenge of homelessness and hunger. Since many people were both poor and wealthy during this time in history. I can relate this to the different classes in Hawaii. I can also relate this to how us as Hawaiians, and other minority races are more likely to be homeless. Even though this is our home. Knowing this from the past can connect to things today. for example, this year the BLM protests and riots have been happening a lot, for good reason. Like the french, they are fed up with the government mistreating them. In Hawaii, with the Kū Kiaʻi Mauna Movement, although we do not use violence to solve these problems we face against our culture and sacred places, we are fed up with the mistreatment of us Native Hawaiians. I learned about how activists use their art to express oppressions and social concerns in our world. These artists use different, from simple paintings and pictures, to murals on buildings and whole rooms of art created digitally. These artists put their feelings of hurt and hope into their pieces, Spreading awareness and educating others on these problems we face. My poem discusses our privilege of having a home and food. This talks about how we take things for granted, things that some people don't have. Having shelter and food is a basic human need. Many are not able to have these things. This captures the feelings of people who are homeless to the best of my ability. Vector Unity Holding Hands - Holding Hands Circle Vector PNG Image | Transparent PNG Free Download on SeekPNG. (2021). These aspects effect our topic of hunger and homelessness because the silk road era was a time of abundance and the economy was thriving. I cant find a way that it directs effects our goal of hunger and homelessness. But since this was a time of trade, new things, and economic growth, this could have effected people who were homeless, hungry, or poor at the time. The silk road and expansion gave them a way to change their lives for the better. People may have been inspired to move to different places during this time as well. The Silk Road. (2003).
