We know that humans preserved the information they collected and shared it with others. All of the information was passed down and grew more complex over time. Agrarian societies were communities centered on farmland and agriculture. These factors work together to create the issue of poverty because of the fact that they grew more complex over time causing their population to go up and that’s what caused the poverty. The lack of resources also caused poverty because of overpopulation. Poverty is a major and common issue that presents itself all around the world. We know that in history there were always people less fortunate than others either due to race, rank system, or they just didn’t have a good economic system. This shows that even back then people were facing poverty. Poverty looks like parents not being able to feed their family or not being able to buy enough clothes or pay off the bills. Sometimes people don’t even live in a house or a decent shelter.

From Agrarian to the Scientific Revolution (Research Post 2)
Collective Learning, Agrarian Societies, the Agricultural Revolution, the Scientific Revolution, and the Age of Enlightenment work together to create or make worse the issue of "poverty" that correlates to the UN Development Goal. These things work together to create or make worse the issue of "poverty" that correlates to the UN Development Goal because it increased the population which led to some of these poverty issues. There are many UN Develop goals that go with the topic of poverty. We know that poverty is an ongoing issue all around the world and that it affects many people. An important development goal in Ashanti would be goal 6 “Clean Water and Sanitation”. For example, according to wateraid.org, more than 6 million people in the world do not have access to clean water and 23 million or eight in every ten people don't have a decent toilet. Poor access to clean water has been an ongoing issue for a long time now and we want to help those who need it.
A factor that created this issue in history that carried on to modern society was how the natives were used as a workforce for the whites. They were basically used as slaves to do what the whites and the foreigners wanted. Something they did was create cash crops and harvest plants and gather food. This shows how inequality and unfairness carried on to modern-day society and how people all over the world are facing poverty. An example in modern-day society is the non-violent civil disobedience movement of the black lives. This is a perfect way to show how equality needs to be restored and revived to make the welfare of humanity better. The UN development goal this relates to is, “No Poverty,” because it shows how it is not only about wealth but the well-being of humans and the colonization and relations between them. It is bigger than just money, it is about connection and bonds. The topic that our group is doing our kahiau research on is poverty in Africa. We know that poverty is an ongoing issue all around the world and that it affects many people. Poverty can be defined in many different ways. According to investopedia.com, “Poverty is the state in which a person lacks the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living.” This is what we believe poverty is too. As hunger relates to poverty, in some research that we have done, we have found that more than a quarter of the hungry population lives on the African continent. Africa holds the highest number of people who are malnourished in the entire world. A strategy that is in the works to reduce poverty in Africa is to increase their agricultural productivity. A solution that is being tried all over the world is to remove barriers so impoverished people have equal access to resources and services. We feel that both of these strategies will help to reduce poverty not only in Africa, but the world too. Works Cited: What is poverty? (n.d.). Guns Germs & Steel’s presentation connects with the factors that are working together to create the issue of "poverty" that correlates to the UN Development Goals. It connects with the factors that are working together to create the issue of "poverty" because they both relied on technology to help improve their economy. In our presentation, it showed how people weren’t productive farmers then became more productive through technology. For example, if we didn’t have this technology we would not be able to find easier ways to farm crops like how Ashanti farms their crops. Guns Germs and Steel also connect with the factors that are working together to create the issue of "poverty" that correlates to the UN Development Goals, because the purpose the Guns Germs & Steel was so that it could prove a point that history followed different courses for different people because of differences among otherʻs environments, not because of biological differences among the peoples themselves. This connect to the goals because one of the goals are about equality which makes them relatable.
The issue of poverty presents itself globally. Resources correlates to the issue of poverty because without resources, there is nothing. What we mean by this is like having resources are crucial. Humans rely on resources such as grocery stores and farms. If there were no grocery stores and farms, we would have a very difficult time surviving. Most people go to stores to buy the things they need whenever they want but in Africa, their situation is a little different. Some areas in Africa are not as developed as others. Many people there have to walk miles to fetch water that is barely even clean. We think that sometimes, people forget how fortunate they really are. We want to use the resources that we have to teach others about what is happening in Africa. Hopefully, we are able to create change. Works Cited: Guns, Germs, and Steel [Video file]. (n.d.). Gandhi handled the onslaught of colonization and imperialism to win back India and relates to the Black Lives Matter movement. In the movie Gandhi, he handled the onslaught of colonization and imperialism to win back India through peaceful protest. In the Gandhi movie, one of the protests he led, the men walked holding up signs and protesting peacefully and the white men started hitting them with sticks. Even though people were getting hurt, everybody stood up for themselves, having people help them along the way. The movie of Gandhi it relates to Black Lives Matter movement. For example, in an article we read, it says that during the peaceful protest, policemen were seen using unlawful force. This included beatings just like in the Gandhi movie.
Gandhi is a model of decolonization in modern society across the globe because he believes in peaceful protest and non-violence. He shows us that we can create change through peace. This correlates to the protests that have been happening on Mauna Kea. There are many leaders like Hinaleimoana Wong that aid in the lead of these peaceful protests on the Mauna. Even when the police officers arrested and restrained the kiaʻi for protesting, they still kept the peace. Works Cited: Attenborough, R. (Director). (1982). Gandhi[Motion picture]. Imperialism, Modern Warfare & Identity Crisis
(Research Post 5)
Colonization & Imperialism work together to make our Kahiau topic worse that correlates to the UN Development Goal. Colonization & Imperialism had many negative effects on Africa, like the cruel treatment of natives. This correlates to the UN Development Goal because the way people were treated caused poverty. For example, from an article, it says, “It developed in the nineteenth century following the collapse of the profitability of the slave trade.” This shows that in the 19th century people profited through slaves. Also in an article it says, “Slaveholders whipped, shackled, hanged, beat, burned, mutilated, branded, and imprisoned slaves. Slave women were often subject to rape and sexual abuse.” This just goes to show the way they treated people caused people many poverty problems.
The way colonization and imperialism can connect to poverty is how they share inequality and unfairness. Back then the Ashanti, Africans loved gold and they loved to trade. So when the whites came, the King would trade his own people to the whites as slaves, for goods and gold. This shows how the whites thought of Africans or humans in general as something that has a price on it. No human should ever have a price of themselves. This also shows neocolonialism because the Ashanti King would trade in his own people for gold and goods. This shows how unfortunate and unequal life was back then for the natives and how the whites would always cause conflicts and problems. Colonization & Imperialism contributes or worsens modern revolutions happening currently because in society right now, the white community has power. For centuries, the white community has had power and control and colored people have been oppressed. The Black Lives Matter movement is an example of a modern revolution and colonization and imperialism have worsened this. Another example of colonization and imperialism would be the spread of diseases. This can relate today because of things like COVID-19. This can relate to Hawaiʻi because these things are also happening here. Colonization alone brings lots of issues to face. Colonization not only caused the white community to think that they have more power over everyone else but also ruptured many ecosystems, by bringing in new organisms while eliminating others. We can clearly see this all around the world with the “endangered species” list. Colonization also brought many diseases upon us that decimated the Native American populations with no ure for some. Imperialism played a role in the war as people fought because they wanted to have more power over another country to prove themselves as “the best.” Imperialism is also one of the major reasons for slavery and the control of people with color. It has many more impacts on our world today in which most arenʻt good. Cite/Sources: (-n.d.). Developments of World War I in scientific, modern warfare tactics, and the results of the Treaty of Versailles work together to make worse our Kahiau topic of poverty and correlates our UN Development Goal. The developments of WWI, modern warfare tactics, and the results of the Treaty of Versailles work together to make worse the topic of poverty because these three factors only bring violence and destruction. Although Africa has not seen the effects of war, they do face an issue which is poverty. Widespread poverty was also seen in Germany after the first world war had ended. Germany, Hungary, and Austria were the allied countries that lost the war. The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to lose territories, decrease their army, and they paid over two billion in funds to their allied countries.
Technology has improved since World War and the political shift in the Treaty of Versailles contribute to happening currently. New technology has been a big part of Word War 1. For example, things like flamethrowers, poison gas, tracer bullets, interrupter gear, aircraft carrier, and etc where all new technologies. These new technologies used in the war is worsening what is happening today because these new technologies are being used for horrible things. For example, from an article, it talks about how a person was shot by a gun here in Hawaiʻi. This just goes to show how technology is being used for bad things, not only here in Hawaiʻi, but all over the world. Works Cited: -12 Technological Advancements of World War I. (2017, April 30). Between WW1 & WW2 & The Great Depression
(Research Post 7)
Developments of World War and the resulting Great Depression in scientific, modern warfare tactics, economic and political impacts of the Treaty of Versailles work together to make worse your Kahiau topic and correlates to the UN Development Goal. Developments of World War and the resulting Great Depression in scientific, modern warfare tactics, economic and political impacts of the Treaty of Versailles work together to make worse your Kahiau topic of poverty because it brought fear and poverty. Even though Africa did not have effects in the war it still faced poverty problems just like the Great Depression. In the Great Depression, they faced a demand, imbalances, and weaknesses in the economy and faltering demand for housing. This worsens and relates to our Kahiau project because just like in the Great Depression Africa faces similar things like demand for housing.
There were many connections that we see today because of the World Wars, the Great Depression, and the political shift in the treaty of Versailles. In todayʻs military, there are lots of weapons that are still used as a result of the World Wars. there are still guns, bombs, tanks, gasses, etc. Although most weapons have “upgraded” since then, they still have a big impact on our world today. The Great Depression took a toll for the worse in the world. There was an increase in homelessness, unemployment, less produces for markets in stock, and the list continues. I believe that if the Great depression hadnʻt took place, that there would be a less amount of these issues happening in the world, let alone Hawaiʻi. The treaty of Versailles, which was the treaty that pretty much ended the war, is in a way a good thing, because without that treaty, who knows how long this war couldʻve continued on to. It made Germany pay for the harmful doings that theyʻve imposed on everyone, and it overall was a great thing for us now and people back then. The factors, causes, and impacts of the World Wars can really connect and correlate to the Kahiau Project. My group's empire in Africa and our issue is poverty. An example from WW2 is how when America reached its highest unemployment level. This caused a lot of people to live in poverty. This puts people in major economic depression. Nuclear warfare can connect to poverty because not only does it cause mass destruction to the land, but also the people. Whenever an atomic bomb is dropped it causes severe damage, destroying buildings, houses and killing and injuring many people. Due to this destruction, it causes economic depression because money is used to rebuild and fix these things. This makes people live in poverty because if they have no houses they will live on the streets with little to no money.
Another example is how new technologies were created. This can relate to not poverty, but how we can help poverty. Instead of these new technologies being used for warfare, it will be used for care and assistance. Maybe robots can be created to give out food to the people who are facing poverty and they can provide helpful knowledge. Or maybe the younger generation and the kids that are facing poverty who don’t have an opportunity to go to a school can be involved in an education program with laptops. These new ideas and innovations can positively impact the people and their lives. Overall, the causes and impacts of the World Wars can connect to the Kahiau project in many ways. There were many connections today that relate to the events of World War 2 and ongoing threats of safety to imperialism. An example that relates to the events of World War 2 and ongoing threats of safety to imperialism is the amount of knowledge we are enduring to make these new technologies. This is an example of modern society as well as here in Hawaii, and it connects to World War II because like in World War II these new technologies are making a big impact on society and maybe even for World War 3. In World War II, new technologies came out like the nuclear bomb and it was tested on Bikini Atoll. After the bomb was tested in the lives of the people were exposed and endangered to the radiation and contamination that was caused by the bombs. Because of this more research is being conducted about these nuclear bombs and how they can be improved, fixed, and more advanced. This could also possibly lead to a WW3 because if a test goes wrong and one of the other big empires see it as a threat, then that means that WW3 could break out. Works Cited: History.com Editors. Impacts of the Cold War (Research Post 9)
In the Cold War, America handled foreign policy with Cuba, Korea, and Vietnam connects with the political impacts of America as the new dominant Empire. Although America has lost a few wars, it connects with the political impacts of America as a dominant Empire. For example, in an article it states the Cold War shaped American foreign policy and political ideology and impacted the domestic economy and the presidency. It also affected the personal lives of Americans, creating a climate of expected conformity and normalcy. This relates to our kahiau project because even though Africa had nothing to do with the Cold War, they still face the issues which the world wars created. An issue that modern warfare has created is the issue of poverty. Although Africa did not play a part in the wars, the effects of the wars are seen worldwide.
Although the Cold War has helped with the advantage of more weaponry in the world and increased the development of nuclear weapons for the military, after the war, studies say that there had been more developments of nuclear technology in science, energy, industry, and especially in the medical field. This situation is a connection with ongoing threats of the safety of imperialism of America because with the new nuclear energy and the technology there is, anyone could get ahold of it. The wrong person potentially could ruin the world. When a nuclear source is exploded, it causes an extreme release of radiation into the environment which not only affects the earth but human lives as well. It can leave hundreds of thousands of people hurt and worse, dead. With this being, the military shouldnʻt have even begun with this war in the first place or came up with nuclear devices. All that nuclear devices and technology have brought is pain and destruction. Works Cited: Naranjo, R. (n.d.). Historical analysis of the Cold War. Current society in the 21st Century impacts our Kahiau topic that correlates to the UN Development Goal because poverty still occurs today. Poverty is a state or condition in which a person or community lacks the financial resources and essentials for a minimum standard of living. Poverty has been an ongoing issue all around the world, but especially in the 21st Century. According to an article, the poverty rate could rise by 0.3 to 0.7 percentage points, to around 9 percent in 2020. This shows how Current society in the 21st Century impacts our Kahiau topic that correlates to the UN Development Goal of poverty.
We prepare our Lāhui and the future generations of people of color to contend with the ongoing issues of Global Empires and their impacts on our global society. We can prepare our Lāhui and the future generations of people of color to contend with the ongoing issues of Global Empires and their impacts on our global society by spreading awareness through peaceful protest and social media. Today we face an issue that's been going on for years which is the mistreatment of people of color. The way we as a Lāhui are working together to fix or spread awareness about this problem is forming peaceful protests and social media. For example, an article recorded that could have been as many as 20,000 people that protested for black lives matter. Also for example, from an article, it states, “In the past week, social media has been flooded with posts surrounding George Floyd’s murder but every time Black American’s raise awareness”.
