If the state of Hawaiʻi were to be decolonized there would be many positive side effects. For one there would be fewer people taking up space. There would be more job possibilities for people in Hawaiʻi, and these jobs will be for them and them only. The current state of Hawaiʻi is pretty good, things here are very well organized. Other than the traffic and overpopulation life here couldn’t be better. Decolonization is the action or process of a state withdrawing from a former colony, leaving it independent. We could be independent but then again we need to think about how we will be able to adapt. Would we be willing to give up things? Would we be able to sustain ourselves? There are many things to consider when thinking about decolonization.

Some examples of how stores like Walmart have been creating challenges on my island by making things really cheap. This makes us want to go there instead of local businesses because of the price of everyday items. There are many big stores like Walmart, Walgreens, and Target all over the island. They take away from little businesses whose prices just cannot compete. With all of these stores they all produce trash but with a lot of them, they create more trash than all of the local stores. This bad because a lot of that trash will end up in the oceans. I do see a specific person in my life that is struggling with poverty. His name is Uncle Tony, he sleeps outside of Mcdonalds at Kam shop. He has a job and a cell phone but he mostly uses all of the money he has for food and his cell phone bill. He uses his phone to look at pictures of his kids and to call them. He cannot afford to buy a house here on this island and that is a real struggle for him. And because of the way he looks a lot of people don’t feel inclined to help him, so that is a social challenge Something that I have learned about how economic trends impact my global issue is that they all lead to mass trash pollution. And a lot of that trash don’t even make it to the landfill. They somehow get into our oceans. My understanding of the impacts of this has influenced the way I see my groups topic as a worthwhile challenge or problem that does need to be addressed. The trash that ends up in our oceans is affecting marine life as well. It kills our fish that we eat, it is also affecting our coral reefs where the fish live, and if they have no home, they won’t just stay here to die, they will go find a new home. So this is a problem that I think needs to be addressed. Some examples of how imperialization has been creating issues in my own island are that they are shutting down roads so that the military can practice whatever they need to practice, this is creating more traffic that is already bad. The military just being there is creating a lot of problems. And when Donald Trump shuts down the government it creates problems for the locals all over Hawaiʻi. When people go through TSA it takes longer because the men and women are not getting paid for working. This is a very serious issue. Those who think that they are stronger and better than others are trying to show that they have power by taking over. That is what happened to the native Americans when Britain came. The same thing happened when the Haole came to Hawaiʻi they thought that they were more superior than the Hawaiians. And in the end, they used their superior weaponry. They took away our culture, they took away our identity. The outsiders didn't even clean up their mess when they got here, they just left it here, and the same thing is happening today. Many tourist are littering all over our beautiful beaches, and we aren’t any better. My mom has a personal connection, my mom works at TSA in the airport, and she doesn’t get paid to work, and yet she still goes, she outs in a lot of effort for nothing. She is just doing this out of the kindness of her heart, she doesn’t have to show up but she does. Something that I learned about Imperialization /globalization is that many people that have been affected from this are still recovering. Globalization has a big impact on the world it changes the perspective that other countries have on their necessities. Globalization is a big problem in this world it changes so many things like how people view what they really need. People think that they need plastic but they really don’t, and globalization is responsible for this. Its influence has been very strong in the US. Some examples of colonization or globalization on my island are phones. They are everywhere almost everyone has one. And big companies like Apple are pushing these new items on us that makes us want to buy their products. Because of this everyone is now addicted and they are distanced from other people. Another example of colonization or globalization is plastic, big companies make a lot of plastic to use for our everyday use, we use plastic bags and there is even plastic in our bottles. A lot of the plastic today goes into the trash without being recycled, and a lot of it ends up in the trash. Reducing the amount of plastic that goes into the waters today is something that needs to be considered. I do see a personal connection to this to me this a serious problem that needs to be resolved. I do not want to swim in a ocean that is polluted with plastic, the same plastic that is killing many marine animals today. I really want my children to grow up in a world where they can enjoy the beach like I do today. Somethings that I am learning about globalization is that the big companies don’t care about anything, they just want to get more money in any way possible. Globalization has a strong influence on us today. Take plastic, for example, many big companies make plastic bags which end up in the trash, and from the trash, a lot of the plastic ends up in the waters. And Hawaiʻi is known for its beautiful beaches, and with all of the trash that goes into the water, it is making our beautiful beaches ugly. On my island Kauaʻi, there is a lot of water pollution/trash all over our beaches. On the beach called Lidgate, there is a lot of trash in the water and on the beach whenever there are heavy rains. This is a big problem because that beach is a fish pond with many different species of fish, so there is an organization that focuses on cleaning up Lidgate. The community participates in beach cleanups all over the island which is really good, and we should continue to practice this. In our state, there is a lot of trash in our waters and a lot of it comes from us. It doesn’t take a lot to put something in the trash cans but we don’t. Our nation is suffering the consequences of water pollution, the great garbage patch is a great example. This topic was chosen by our group because we needed to but we also care about our island chain and we thought that we should at least try to take part in taking care of it. This topic can change Hawaiʻi because we there will be less trash in the water. We will also improve the quality of trash in the water reducing the amount of fish death decrease. I want the future generations to grow up in a place where they don’t need to worry about this problem. My family could be an audience in this. My ability to make an impact in the community and possibly make a difference in this issue is pretty strong, as long as I continue to bring awareness to this issue. I think it will be important because our world is falling apart, and I think that it’s about time I do something about this. some lessons I think I will learn from this project is that I will learn what it is like to care about something so much that I am willing to do anything to make it better. I will also learn what it means to be responsible and respectful to the ʻaina. Many water bodies near urban areas (cities and towns) are highly polluted. This is the result of both garbage dumped by individuals and dangerous chemicals legally or illegally dumped by manufacturing industries, health centers, schools, and marketplaces. The main problem caused by water pollution is that it kills organisms that depend on these water bodies. Dead fish, crabs, birds and seagulls, dolphins, and many other animals often wind up on beaches, killed by pollutants in their habitat.
In a global approach, there are a lot of problems given to us that shows water pollution is on the rise. So far in the past three decades, there has been a 10%-15% increase of nitrogen in coastal ecosystems. Nitrogen and phosphorus are the most prevalent due to eutrophication, which impairs beneficial uses of water. Every day 2 million tons of sewage and industrial and agricultural waste are put in the world’s water, and the wastewater produced annually is six times more water than in all the rivers in the world. In some local approach, Kamilo Beach, also nicknamed “Trash Beach”, is home to the dirtiest beach on Earth. Naʻahelu, Hawaiʻi is home to this dirty beach where people would most likely never swim. In fact, 90% of its garbage is all plastic which is why people in Hawaiʻi should crack down on its usage. But it is also found that most of its garbage is from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is roughly the size of Texas. Millions of colorful plastic pieces are found inside the sand which can make this beach terribly depressing. Luckily people are taking action on this problem and have started to clean the beach up. The Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund picked up roughly 15,000 pounds of trash in April 2017. On December 1st. 1018 my dorm (Kaleiopapa) and my group mates went to the west side of Oʻahu to Zablans beach. There we took out invasive species out of the ground so that the water flow would be stronger and reach the native plants that we were going to plant. it was a long process and after abut forty-five minutes we pulled a lot of the invasive plants out of the ground. We needed to take out all the the weeds, because then it would be a waste of time to pull them out, just to grow again. After we pulled them out we took a break. Aunty Chelsey taught us a lot about the native plants that we were going to be planting, one of them is called Milo. She gave us specific instructions on how to plant every type of plant. After we finished planting, we started to hear towards the beach to start the beach clean-up. We picked up as much trash as possible. We did this so that we could help get rid of the trash that is harming wildlife and making the beach look prettier.
