For improvement of quality work, I would give myself a 4.6 because I feel I have greatly improved in my quality work, but I can do a little better. For improvement of digital application, I would give myself a 5 because I have learned a lot in this class about how to make photoshop edits and how to write blogs like this. For improvement of self organization, I would give myself a 3.4 because I improved slightly, but itʻs been i bit hectic lately. I feel that the things i learned in this class are valuable because they have taught me the qualities of a good leader. Making strong connections to historical events can help in the future because they would give me insight into what is happening and could help me to solve an issue. I feel this project has improved my sense of organization and help to improve my ability to defend my point. I have learned that to be a good leader, you need to be rooted in the past and have a deep connection with your culture. I have definitely improved my ability to defend and prove my point eloquently and professionally because of this class. I have improved my conversational ability and my ability to speak up to get my question heard. Citations: Sari, T. (2020, March 08). Hawaiian State Flag Upside Down. I believe that it is important to mesh our native teachings and values with modern society and itʻs western thinking. something I think needs to happen however is that we need to embrace our native side more because in order to build a better hawaii for our future generations, we must pull from the past as our ancestors did. In this modern world, I feel we are more focused on western ideas and beliefs which shouldnʻt be so, we should be looking back to our roots, where we came from because it makes us as a people unique and different from others. This uniqueness and bring more ideas and possibilities to the table than if we only thought about the now and modern western thinking. I think that being a student at Kamehameha Schools is important and gives us more opportunities and knowledge about current events and problems. This means that we should be able to stand up for the Lāhui, but it doesnʻt have to be us. it could be any well educated and well articulated native person, it has nothing to do with the school. I believe that if a young adult that went out and researched on their own about our culture and race will feel a better connection to it, Iʻm not saying that kids at Kamehameha donʻt feel a connection, itʻs just that some think the school is shoving this down our throats. Personaly, I love learning about my culture and history and I have no hard feelings against those who donʻt, but I belive someone that has a very deep connection to the culture will be a great leader of out Lāhui. More specifically to the Boston Massacre. I compare these two events because both were about the people being unhappy with the government at the time and protesting and rioting. Now the BLM protests havenʻt been met with any massive loss of life by the US Government or the police force, but I am just comparing the fact that the BLM movement and the American Revolution are drawing some simalarities. The way that American occupation has effected my groupʻs UN Development goal, Clean Water and Sanitation, can be traced back to the introduction and practice of western ideologies on our ʻĀina. They introduced new technologies that require factories or other unsustainable sources of power to operate. Citations: American Flag: US Flag: Outdoor Nylon American Flag. (2017, July 08). This would have changed the entire course of history because WWII caused so many things to happen and caused new discoveries. Itʻs actualy very hard to tell how much this would change the course of history. For Hitler, he wouldnʻt have been able to gain as much of an influence as he did because nothing would have to had been fixed if Germany was given better treatment from the treaty. The way WWi has effected my groupʻs UN Development goal, Clean water and sanitation, would be that the war needed supplies, which results in factories and factory run off. But the treaty of Versailles was the reason Hitler started WWII which resulted in the US making the Atomic bomb and atomic energy. this again pollutes the water sources around it. World War One. (2013, October 23). Retrieved July 02, 2020, from https://www.bl.uk/world-war-one The Malthusian Flux impacts the BLM movement because the Government is unaware or not willing to fix this problem because of everything that is happening in the world right now. This problem was left alone for quite some time now, hundreds of years actually, and over that time it has grown into a serious issue that the government doesnʻt want to of know how to face. Something else I would like to bring up would be the Civil War. As we know, this war was what ended slavery in America, but after the war the government was worried about an economic collapse because there was no work force to work on plantations. but if they were able to arrest black people back into servitude they could have people to work those plantations and make them money legally. This is why black people were arrested for petty crimes like loitering and then were forced back into the slave industry. My groupʻs UN Development goal is Clean Water and Sanitation. They way the Malthusian Flux theory effects this issue is that Chinaʻs population is rising and rising over time, even reaching 1.393 billion in 2018. This then leads to need for resources to feed all those people, and thatʻs when the huge wheat farms come into play. China was expected to produce 130 million tonnes in 2016/17. But the problem then comes from maintaining those farms. To ensure the safety of the crops, China uses pesticides to keep the bugs away from the crops, but these pesticides can be harmful to humans and can be leaked or washed out into local fresh water sources, polluting them even further. This quote from the article Pesticide use and health outcomes: Evidence from agricultural water pollution in China explains this issue well "However, according to the China Pollution Source Census (2010), agriculture is now a bigger source of water contamination in China. " this shows that that the pesticides used to maintain the crops are a huge source of water pollution. Citations: Wellemeyer, J. (2020, June 05). Something else I wanted to add was about peaceful protesting. THis connects back to Liliʻu because she did not believe in violence. A quote from Gandhi that explains this well would be "An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind. " An example of this would be the peaceful BLM marches that took place a few weeks back here in Hawaii. Something else this reminds me of is the Mauna Kea Protests because no one fought or enacted any violence, the way the protesting happened was the people camped and lived on the mauna, trying to prevent people from going up to the telescopes. Mahatma Gandhi. (2020, June 18). Retrieved June 26, 2020, from https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahatma_Gandhi The Industrial revolution of course introduced factories and factories runoff that pollutes surrounding. water sources. An example of this back in the early industrial revolution would be the coal mines that would produce run off and flow out into local water sources. But this isnʻt the only way water can be contaminated by factories and their byproducts. This quote is from the article Environmental Pollution Caused by Factories "Factories contribute to water and land pollution by acidifying rain, chemical spills and disposal of toxic waste." This means that factories also produce acid rain that can be devastating to both land and water. Factories are all over the place, in america, and even here in Hawaii we have a power plant that burns coal. as previously stated the burning of coal can cause pollution. This quote from a U.S. Energy Administration profile analysis shows how Hawaii plans to do about this problem "Currently, coal is consumed only by Hawaii's electric power sector... The plant has a planned retirement date in 2022." This would be a great way to help stop pollution. Citations:

The industrial revolution had introduced large factories and in turn, factory runoff. This runoff usually followed unto natural freshwater sources, polluting them and making them un drinkable. This quote is from the article Toxic Water: Across Much of China, Huge Harvests Irrigated with Industrial and Agricultural Runoff "The moment the engines roar, the ingenious makeshift machine fills the hose with turbid water from the nearby canal where a pharmaceutical factory has just dumped its rancid effluent. ʻThere’s no water source except for this dirty water,ʻ the farmer says. ʻWe have to use it.ʻ" This shows that the runoff from these factories are harming nearby water sources and one of Chinaʻs main food sources. In Hawaii, runoff from urban areas and cesspools occasionally create runoff that flows into local rivers and then the ocean. This problem is currently trying to be combated by the "Watershed Planning and Polluted Runoff Control". This quote from the article POLLUTED RUNOFF CONTROL PROGRAM best describes how the system would work "The watershed planning process uses a series of cooperative, iterative steps to characterize existing conditions, identify and prioritize problems, define management objectives, and develop and implement protection or remediation strategies." This is basically a system that should be implemented in all watersheds to help prioritize and organize what needs to be done to protect the area. The effects of river and ocean pollution could be devastating to the local wildlife. Citations:

In China, people don't have enough money to buy essentials of life being food water and shelter. This leads to them having to drink out of unsanitized public bodies of water. These bodies of water are polluted and aren't always cleaned out. We have very clean drinking water here in Hawaii. But the oceans surrounding our islands are not so clean. We sit just east of the Pacific Garbage Patch which spans about 617,763 sq miles. Being this close means we will get a lot of trash on our shores as well. Today, people are helping to clear the garbage that washes up on our shore, and clear out the Pacific Garbage Patch. |
