United Nations Goal: Poverty
The main focus of our research was poverty in South/Central America. I found that this issue impacted many people in this area. According to a article called, Addressing the Causes of Poverty in South America, “74 million South Americans (about 12.4 percent of the region’s population) live on less than $2 per day.” This is a significant amount of people that are in poverty, especially because most of these people are native to the area. The main causes of poverty in South America are unequal distribution of wealth, colonialism/racism, political turmoil, and the difficult access to a quality education. In lots of South America, the unequal distribution of wealth causes there to be homeless run-down areas right next to wealthy suburbs. This is due to the wealth being hoarded by the top 1 or 2 percent of citizens. The impacts on the ʻāina from poverty is that the land is not well nurtured and is not producing many crops and food. The impacts on the people from poverty is that many people are unhealthy. 74 million people live off of less than $2 a day. This is not enough money to pay for food, water, and shelter. In the low locations in South/Central America, it cost around $800 USD per month for housing. At the rate $1.90, they do not get enough money in one year to pay for one months cost. The poverty in South/Central America is connected to the many of the topics that we discussed like the homelessness problem in Hawaiʻi, the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom, and the rabbit proof fence movie. They are connected because they all have to do with Western contact and colonization. Before Western contact in the 1400s, there were many indiginous people of South/Central America and were many different groups that thrived in their lands. Because of Western Contact, many of those people now live in Poverty, as the Foreign people are at the top of the social hierarchy. This is the same as Hawaiʻi and as many other native places. Hawaiʻi was illegally annexed by the US and was forced to adjust to the Western way. Many of the Western people took the land in Hawaiʻi for no price, which left many of the Hawaiian people with no home. The Western way of living has affected many people all over the world and still does in todays society. - Kuhina Lunn

The issue that was discussed and researched was poverty and our global location is the South/Central Americas. In this continent there are many issues and factors that lead to the major poverty that forces many people that live in that area to try to immigrate to the United States. According to the article Poverty in South America, “Poverty in South America is considered living on $4 per day. The northern tip of the continent (the countries closest to Panama) are the countries with the largest headcount of impoverished people in South America; they range from 20 percent to 40 percent of the population. Guyanaand Suriname range between 46 percent and 53 percent of the continent’s population living on $4 per day; some live on less than that amount. The southern half of South America has a much lower percentile of the population living below the poverty line, excluding Bolivia, which is at a steep 48 percent. Chile and Uruguay are at 11 percent and Argentina is at 7 percent. Poverty in South America has declined within the last two decades. In 1990, 12.2 percent of the population was living on $1.25 per day; that number has dropped to 5.5 percent despite the population’s rising from 422.3 million in 1990 to approximately 581.4 million.” This shows how bad the problem of poverty affects the community and how 50% of the population live off of $4 a day, while some live off of even less. Although this problem has grown and not really depleted much in the past few years, there are many people and communities (like Concern Worldwide) that notice the issues that South America faces and post articles on the issue to spread awareness. For example the article Addressing the Causes of Poverty in South America states that a cause of poverty is due an unequal distribution of wealth among the region. As it says in the article, “According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Latin and South America are the most unequal regions in the world in terms of wealth. Corporations, politicians and unequal opportunities contribute in part to high poverty rates among the majority of the population.” This shows how the wealth that is distributed among the people is unequal and how it has become the most unequal region in the world, due to the people of bigger power that distribute that kind of unfair wealth among the community. This kind of leadership can be shown in the flipped lecture about the French Revolution. King Louis was a very immature and oblivious leader to his people and France and never cared for the economic and political issues, leaving the community in poverty and hunger since he and Marie Antionette raised the taxes and used them to buy the bread and make cake, which shows how selfish they were. This can be similar to the issues of poverty in South America since one of the reasons they are in poverty is also due to the unfair distribution of wealth among the people. The people who were in charge of the money did not fairly give the community all an equal amount. Another factor that contributed to this was racism as well. The people were all put in a caste system that divided them into different wealth and job classes based on their ethnicity and appearance. Some historical content from the movies that were shown to us for example, in Gandhi, the man himself noticed how the government was unfair to the natives of India, and he constantly tried to stand against them to make everyone equal and no one will live in poverty. - Kyan Ulloa

The issue that was researched is poverty. Hawaii is addressing poverty by giving money to schools. Some solutions to poverty are lowering taxes, ect. Hawaii is giving money to low income schools to support students and teachers there. The solutions that Hawaii should be using are lowering taxes on poor families and making houses affordable. It’s possible to make connections based on other events. A note to make is that in the French Revolution that King Henry XVI made decisions that put his country in poverty. Another note to make is that Gandhi on the other hand was trying to do the opposite. King Henry XVI raised the taxes on the poor people while the rich collected their taxes and partied with it. Gandhi used peaceful attempts to remove Britain's rule India along with their taxes. - Aaron Hirota

The issue that we discussed is poverty, taking a look into poverty we see that it is a common problem in Hawaiʻi. Project Hawai'i Inc is wanting to help address this problem. They work to reduce these public costs by supporting, caring for, and educating our children throughout the year that helps them stay healthy and gain the life and social skills they need to succeed. There are many ways to reduce poverty, like Increasing employment. Although there is a lot of work to be done, workers won't generate much of a profit and the government can help with this. Investments in infrastructure, fixing old structures, buildings, converting to clean energy source and investments in vital services such as schools, childcare and elder care can generate both public benefits and jobs. With people in Hawaii having a large dept and massive expenses it sounds like a connection with France when Loui XVI was a king. The French economy struggled under Louis XVI also due to large dept and massive expenses. And people began to revolt against him. - Konale Horswill

Kyan Ulloa: The UN goal of Poverty plays a huge role in many current issues happening in our global location of South America. Some issues that come with the UN Goal of No Poverty is racism. According to the article Addressing the Causes of Poverty in South America, one of the problems that poverty leads to is, “In South and Latin America, poverty can become a generational epidemic because of leftover institutions and sentiments from the Casta system. Casta was a complex system of written rules based on racial segregation similar to the Hindu Caste, where people were separated into societal classes based on appearance and ethnic makeup that determined where they could live, who they could marry, what jobs they could work and more. The system was popularized by early white colonialists in the region and the lingering effects of it have been among the causes of poverty in South America.” This shows how racism has affected the Natives and forced them into poverty since the classes that they are forced into are unfair, and the only people that get a good enough salary or amount of money are the richer people, leaving the other locals to stay in their state of poverty. We can see this kind of problem happening in Hawaii, for example, homelessness. This is a huge issue today and many of the locals are homeless in Hawaii. Hawaii also has one of the highest rates of homelessness around the United States and is not getting any better. This issue is caused due to the high prices of housing and how expensive it is to live in the state.
