The leaders I researched were Masa Keita and George helm. Masa Keita was a leader in the Mali empire from 1312-1327. He helped his community to great riches and opened up trade routes to boost the economy. Gorge Helm was a leader in the more modern Hawaii and he lived from 1950 - 1977. George advocated against the bombing of Kahoolawe and sacrificed his life by doing so. He showed Hawaiians to step up for themselves and fight for what is right. The symbols I chose to represent Masa Keita were gold bars and African mosques. He was known to be the richest man in history and created the first University in Mali. For George Helm I gave him the picture of Kahoolawe and his guitar. George used his guitar to express how he felt about Kahoolawe. The leadership traits I associate with them are Inspires respect, wise investments, politically shrewd, ha’aha’a (humble), ho’okipa (hospitality), and mana (spiritual power). I chose this because I see these traits in everything that they do.

The 2 leaders I chose to research were Pauahi and Amenhotep. Amenhotep was the leader of Egypt from 1493 BC - 1514 BC, during the18th dynasty which he founded. Pauahi was born in 1831 to Abner Pākī and Konia Pākī, she was a leader without having to be given the title leader. Amenhotepʻs impact was that he gained the kingdom when it was all rich and powerful but he still showed every single person in his kingdom the respect they deserved, thats what made him a good king. Same with Pauahi, everybody liked Pauahi because she was always thinking about others more than herself. I chose Amenthop because when we did our research I saw that he was a good king and he was the grandson of King Tut. I chose Pauahi because she is a big name in our school and she has similar traits as Amenthop. For Amenhotep I chose humility, fairness, and integrity because he showed all of these traits during his work. Same with Pauahi but the traits I chose for her was obedience, honesty, and patience

The leader that I researched for our empires project in the first semester was Abbas The Great. He was considered the strongest leader of the Safavid empire in Persia from 1588 to 1629. Abbas the first or Abbas The Great was born January 27th 1571 and died January 19th 1629. He was known as the strongest leader of the Safavid empire because he made major advancements in the military force and drove out rival armies from the land. The leader chose that related to modern Hawaiʻi was Prince Kuhio. He was born March 27 1871 and died January 7th 1922. He was adopted by King Kalakaua’s wife and attended the Hawaiian royal school. He was a politician who was known for introducing the statehood act in Hawaiʻi. The icons I chose were a coin for Abbas and the Hawaiian flag for Prince Kuhio. I chose the coin for Abbas because it depicts and honors him and that was the main way his image was passed on since there were no traditional portraits, paintings,or sculptures of him at the time. I chose the Hawaiian flag for Prince Kuhio because he was a politician for Hawaiʻi and has done a lot for Hawaiʻi.

The leader I researched was Emperor Taizu of Song. He was born in 927 and died in November of 976, he was the Emperor of China from 960 to his death 976. He impacted China by starting to reunify it, he was the one who set it in motion while his younger brother/successor was the one who completed it. He also established the Song Dynasty which is known for its peacefulness and artistic achievements, it would go on from 960 to 1279. The icon I chose for him was someone bowing which relates to a Chinese proverb that says, “Be like the bamboo, the higher you grow the deeper you bow.” Which represents humility, he was known for being very kind and humble. The Hawaiian leader I researched was Prince Kūhiō, he was born on March 26 1871 and died on January 7 1922. He was a Hawaiian politician known for pushing the Hawaiian Homesteads Act, and creating the hospital at Kalaupapa for lepers. The icon I chose for him was the symbol for the United States Congress since he was the first Hawaiian in Congress.

Leadership Traits Reflection
Based on my classmates posters and responses, the traits of leadership that stands out to me the most in these people are humility, patience, and honesty, and fairness. These traits also seem to have the greatest impact on the people that these leaders have served. I believe that the traits that I already have are fairness and humility. On the other hand, I could work on being more honest and patient when I'm working with my group. I think that the traits of fairness, honesty, and humility are the most important to develop to help with the issues we may face in our smaller communities. A leader that is fair, honest, and humble is very important and if they don't have these significant traits or characteristics when leading a group, they might not have a good impact on the issues facing our lāhui.
