Final Group Reflection
Jordyn K - I’ve learned, as a future graduate of Kamehameha and a Pua a Pauahi, that my role is to always know your place; when is the appropriate time to be silent, and when is the appropriate time to speak up for what is right and just. In my own community outside of school, whether it be at home, with family, or during hula, it’s absolutely essential to be involved in current events happening in our own community - city, state, or country. However, we also must be able to have respect to know our place and where we stand in certain issues. Although our peers may not see eye to eye on some things, in today’s day and age, it has never been more clear that we must have kapu aloha for each other. Therefore, knowing our place has proven to be a key factor. We should never immediately jump to conclusions if we don’t fully understand what we are talking about. On that note, we should also be critical when evaluating our sources and our information. Embracing information that is false is unacceptable. Being ignorant is not an excuse for spreading false information, either. We must be vigililant and careful when we choose to share information with others - we should be sharing 100% facts, and we should be doing this with confidence. Overall, this all relates back to knowing where we stand in our society today.
Given all I've learned this year from World History, I can best utilize my personal talents as well as the gift of education to advocate for my ideals and beliefs in my own community. I can do this by spreading awareness about the LGBTQ+ community through platforms like social media or even through community service. By sharing good information with others, it can help to educate my friends and family to create a more harmonius society. I can also take action by paritipating in hands-on activities. My mom's good friend feeds the homeless at a shelter every month, and prior to covid, we helped to serve their food every so often. My parents and I also make it a priority to recycle all plastic bottles if we use any. Another great habit that my own family participates in is the donation of old toys, clothes that we've outgrown, and other well-kept items and donating them to goodwill or other companies so that those who are less fortunate will be able to use them. These things in which I particpate in cover all UN Sustainability Goals - I will continue to do this and even do more to help positvely benefit my community. |

Haku - As a Pua a Pauahi and a future graduate of Kamehameha, I learned that we have to all learn to get along. As a kid, I had friends of all backgrounds and ethnicities and really thought nothing of it, but growing up, I saw that there were many people who did not treat everyone respectfully. I can best utilize the gifts and knowledge that I learned from school by advocating for many different things that I feel are important to have today. What I mean by this is that I feel that I should try to be the change in the world, starting with my community and doing what I can to help them better the world as well. Already, me and my group were advocating for something that we felt needed to be changed in our community and I think that it made a really great impact on ourselves as well as others. When we apply what we learned from school to our everyday lives and shoot for change, we can make things happen.
Tessia - Throughout this class I have learned many different idea, the most important is respect. So many issues and horrible events could have been avoided if we all just learned to respect all humans the same, not because you identify that person with a loved one but simply because they are human beings. Growing up I was taught that no matter where you go in life to treat the people around you with respect. My community has a bad reputation but this is only because nobody stands for disrespect. My family and I volunteer almost every month at the free food distribution as a way to give back to those in need. We are fortunate enough to be comfortable during this terrifying time, but we will never be too good to volunteer. While we are not buying each and every grocery given away, those food drives will not be possible without the people who volunteer time. If we were not the ones then there is less hands helping to pack backs and fill cars, less people can be helped, more stress for other helpers, it is simply a start to a long future of helping in my community.
Competition for Resources in a Global Society
Paragraph 2, Jordyn K - Mankind’s evolution evolved through agricultural, scientific and industrial revolutions because new technologies, ideologies and methods had been invented during the period which further advanced our understanding of science and agriculture. In the era of enlightenment, thinkers learned to utilize these skills by further developing it and taking advantage of these new discoveries so that we could apply ourselves to this new knowledge. For example, with the manufacturing of goods, we were able to create new and accessible machines to be able to mass-produce certain products. As a result of this, mankind realized that we could take what we already have and develop it even further. This turn of events absolutely makes sense that humans used these skills to almost eliminate ourselves because humans have a tendency to want to strive for bigger and better, even if it may pose a dangerous threat. Because of this willpower that we possess, this obviously developed into WWII technology, such as bombs and nuclear weapons which can be used against our own human race. This impacts my Kahiau Topic at a global level because with the development of certain technologies came the advancement of businesses which opened the doors for new opportunities in the economy. However, women were not in the spotlight in history - they didn’t have much of a say regarding the development of technology and science: the beliefs during that time was highly tipped towards the favor of men. They wanted women to raise families, while the men went to work. In the midst of all these dangerous advancements, women, especially women of color, did not have much of a say in anything. This shows how different the result of today’s technology would be if we actually had the opinion of women in history.

Paragraph 1, Haku S - The war did not end. I say this because we can see so many effects of the War upon us today. Behaviors, attitudes, and actions still kind of resemble what we have learned about from the first world war which should have ended all wars. Already we can tell that the wars were not all ended because we also had a WWII. There were still many wars after the first world war such as WWII, the Cold War, Korean War, Vietnam War, etc. The second world war occurred after the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a time of economic downfall and stock markets were crashing. The second world war was supposed to help everyone get back up and try to gain back economic wealth. The Great Depression for America ended when they entered WWII. We can still see some effects and similarities to the Great Depression because with Covid, everything shut down, and many people were seeing a decrease in earnings and overall wealth. We can see that whenever our country has to endure something horrible, we end up getting into a kind of state of depression.

Paragraph 3, Tessia M - Hawai’i is know for is beautiful landscapes however as time moves forward we are experiencing a rapid decrease in our islands natural resources. Addressing the lessons we learned in the past can show how we might deal with this problem in the future. One lesson as seen in Schindler’s list and many other accounts from World War two is greed. Due to Nazi Germany, and its hatred millions lost their lives, but from that (as seen in schindlers List ) they kept human beings in horrible conditions for no other reason other than free labor. However Greed is also a major problem here in Hawai’i because we are such a small island chain. Greed has been a problem in our islands for hundreds of years, it encouraged the exploitation of our land for profit, but also the fueled the illegal annexation of Hawaii. In the past people have kept other humans, land, and properties all our of greed, however that needs to stop. For our people to move forward in appreciation for one another. His generation is the future of Hawaii and I like to think we are caring and empathetic but we are not perfect, using the events of the past will help future generations. One way we will tackle this issue is by starting now, and at the source. By eliminating greed, and hatred and replacing that with equality and mutual resect will only benefit our people and home.

From Evolution to Revolution
Jordyn K, Paragraph 3 - Our Kahiau topic is gender equality, which can be discussed and applied in comparison to both native traditions as well as modern agricultural society. In native traditions of foraging/hunter-gathering societies, gender roles were applied to this even millions of years ago. The men would do the hunting while the duties of foraging would fall upon the women. These duties were assigned accordingly because while the men hunted, the women needed to be taking care of the children because they bear the responsibility of birthing children. Because hunting requires certain skills, they believed that women would not be able to acquire as well as perform these needed skills if they had an unborn child, or were pregnant because it affects the bodyʻs balance. With that being said, hunting and foraging could not be combined in the same expedition, so the foraging assignments would fall on the women while the men hunted. However, just because women bear children absolutely does not mean they are not capable of hunting as well. As civilization progresses, I believe that these gender roles or “stereotypes” persist until modern agricultural societies, and even today during COVID-19. Women can definitely acquire the same skills as men, and they can work just as hard. And just because women birth children doesnʻt mean that it is solely their responsibility to take care of the child; men can also do that as well. It is clear that today we STILL need to strive for a balance and break away from the ancient stereotypes that were present in the hunting/gathering community.
The gender roles of hunting/gathering were with purpose, and I say so, not because women are incapable of hunting, but because pregnancy would probably be very difficult to handle while trying to capture and kill game. These roles in ancient civilizations make sense - however, as time progressed, these beliefs were blown out of proportion, leading to strong stereotypical judgements and prejudice. |

Haku S, Paragraph 1 - Back then people like Hawaiians would go out and while the men were the ones hunting for food, the women were always the ones who stayed behind and took care of the kids or would gather some plants. Although both men and women had their own respective parts in the society, they would still help each other out and would take turns doing stuff for the family and each other. Everyone took care of their community, the land, and the waters. Because of this, everyone and everything was in harmony in the ahupuaʻa. Nowadays we see some people still farming and hunting but mostly there are industries who bring food and resources from other areas of the world or who ship to those various places. Now, a lot of times, our “hunting” and “gathering” is just us going to the store and buying groceries and other necessities. Some pros to how it was before is that Hawaiians would only hunt what was needed and would also share extras with other families. Some cons to this though is that there could end up not being enough or when they go out, there could just be barely anything to find. Some pros to how everything is nowadays is that everyone has the chance to get what they need when they need it. Almost everything is attainable and you can get anything you want. Some cons to how it is now is that many industries could end up getting too much of one thing and creating an off balance in nature and things are sometimes too expensive. This could end up affecting other industries that help us be sustainable today and with higher prices business may end up running low as well.

Tessia M , Paragraph 2 - The understanding that Hawaii was at one point in time entirely self sufficient, is extremely important because if it was done once in theory it can be done again. However there are a few changes since that time including a large growth in population size and a lot less land due to commercialization of our ‘aina. There are few small companies which source locally grown and sustainable fruits and vegetables but because of their size in relation to the population size here they are not able to meet the supply and demand like matson and other outside sources. This understanding forces the people of Hawaii to buy food from the store and in turn enabling the funds for more barges. Leading to Hawaii to be dependant upon americas large corporations. Learning here at Kamehameha schools puts young Hawaiians on the path to good careers so hopefully one day they are able to give back to our people in 2021 and beyond.

Impacts of Religion, Culture, Enlightenment,
& Exchanges through Expansion
Jordyn K, Paragraph 1 - In Europes dark ages, they experienced a period of barbaric actions and loss of intellectual stability. However, some scholars were very biased towards the Roman point of view during this time period, more specifically, an italian scholar named Petrarch. When outside forces conquered the former Roman empire, they did away with ancient traditions in which Petrarch considered was the “apex of human achievement.” However, many historians today have claimed that this time period is not “dark” at all - a more reflecting name for this would be the enlightenment because of major political, social, and economic change/growth throughout this time. During this time, agriculture experienced signifannt improvement. For the rest of the world, these ages were not considered dark because the term “the dark ages” is strictly from the Roman’s point of view due to the fact that things were changing and not everybody was happy with that change. In other parts of the world, like China, there was never a period considered the “Dark ages'' because trade routes boomed as they experienced reform in leadership from time to time. In Southeast Asia as well as Africa, their religious and cultural beliefs took an upward climb with the construction of temples as well as agricultural systems. Like China, West Africa flourished due to trade routes that consisted of salt and gold.
Today, we face our own "dark age" because of the fact that many people refuse to have acceptance in their hearts and minds for the community. Because of the bias they feel towards the LGBTQ+, they do not want to be advocates, let alone educate themselves on what it means to be apart of that community. Instead, they want to immediately shut it down, without letting themselves become accustomed to those who identify as that. That is where it becomes a problem regarding gender equality - they do not see these people as equals simply because of what gender they identify with, which is beyond wrong. An injustice that needs to be addressed immediately so we can emerge from our own "dark age." |

Paragraph 4, Haku S - History does have value when it comes to finding solutions to our modern-day problems because, especially now, scientists have to build off of prior knowledge to make the vaccine for Covid. They have to do all kinds of research and tests to solve the problem. Even if it is their own or someone elseʻs knowledge, they can always build off of it and be able to solve our problems today. Without prior knowledge and history of science, we would be screwed because it would take way too long to come up with a vaccine. History also contributes to even our own personal problems. When we make mistakes, it becomes history, then we learn from those mistakes, and everything is all good. We can look to history to spot different perspectives and similar challenges and see how people reacted to them. One way we do this now is by getting the flu shot. Back then people were scared of the flu but now we take a little bit of it to gain an immunity. Instead of fearing it, we attack it little by little and now the flu is barely even a problem. History can help everyone whether big or small and even though we may not see it, it makes a huge impact on our lives. When we understand history we can further see how it impacts our lives and our world today.

Paragraph 2, Tessia M - Religion is not the same as culture it is a branch under the civilizations. During the Dark ages it was simpler time. People based much of their culture on religion, the most prominent was Cathlic Christian. It was the most socially acceptable, and the church gain a lot of power over the people. However as time when on people moved and populations diversified, and by the age of enlightenment people were making decisions and choices based around religion and rational thinking. In turn bringing into light the prodestant church. The prodestant church is still a church of christ and a branch of chrisitanity, but it seems to be less focused and strict. This change in thinking directly connects to our issue as the chathlic church does not openly accept the LGBTQ community and still very strongly believes in gender roles however because or the shift in thinking from the dark ages to the enlightenment to now people are free to choose expression of themselves under the protection of the constitution in America.

Paragraph 3, Khloe G - During the time of Exploration and Exchanges, the industrial revolution began to flourish. Technology and knowledge advanced. Many of the inventions from the industrial revolution are used today, for instance the steam engine. Though this time period did leave a stain on the economy. Class stratification was enforced. The rich and the poor were separated. Those apart of the higher class levels in society were offered education, a nice home, and good work, while families of the lower class were exploited as early as the age of 9 being forced into harsh labor work and lived in poverty. This communist society led to heavy discrimination based on appearance, race, religion, and sex. We see this discrimantion repeat itself through society with many diverse communities such as the LGBTQ+ community. Some citizens are discriminated by the government wether its gay marriage rights being illegal before 2015, or people that identify as transgender being threatened to recieve no health care.
