Random Item Poem: A trip to Disneyland Human behavior innocence and experience The best method to overcome negativity Topic Poem: Inequality Between a man and woman Big house to little house Money vs nothing Decisions from the past Look further than an image Theres more than what appears Not balanced, at first glance You could change your future if given the chance What did you learn about how art can be used to showcase and highlight social concerns in history and/or modern society? Art is able to showcase and highlight social concerns in both history and modern society because of the messages behind them. They can be shown through paintings, drawings, sculptures, books, poems, posters and more. Art is a way for us to express our thoughts and feelings towards issues and things that are important to us. Art influences modern society by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across different kinds of people. Art is communication. It allows people from different cultures and different places to communicate with each other via images, sounds and stories. Socially engaged art can ignite outrage and demands for change, provide a platform for reflection, collaboration, and building community. Art history allows us to look back and understand how our civilization evolved over the centuries. It is a way to know ourselves better. What does your poem mean/discuss/reflect? My poem is about Inequality. During this session I was looking at this picture below of the unbalanced living, one with money, big housing, green vibrant grass and everything perfect. However, the side below with the broken and worn down houses with pretty much nothing is pretty sad. Inequality is unexpected and happens all the time. Like men and women incomes at their jobs, between people of different races, and more. I wanted my poem to represent what was going on in the image. I wanted to add the last line specifically of “You could change your future if given the chance” so that people can see the bigger picture of our Kahiau Project and how we are trying to help those that are suffering from poverty, homelessness and inequality. I hope this poem teaches them to not judge a book by its cover and to “Look further than an image, there's more than what appears” because sometimes people just happen to fall into these categories by chance and it’s very hard to recover without the help so it’s not in our interest to judge those without learning about their story first. Although there are many negatives to how colonization has impacted my Kahiau Project topic of poverty and homelessness. Some of the positive impacts were that Hawai’i gained many resources, the humanity in Hawaii was expanded as well and it gave Hawai’i more of an opportunity to be a part of a democracy and find a way to live new lifestyles. However, sometimes the negative side of things over sees the positive. In this case the negative impacted the Hawaiian people much more, upon taking control of the islands, the US not only harmed locals, but also the local environment. Taking our native lands and using it for selfish reasons was not okay with the Hawaiian and local people of the islands. Practice drills left the land deeply harmed and the growing population of military personnel depleted resources. This has an effect on my Kahiau Topic of poverty and homelessness in Hawai’i because by taking the land, it also takes away our home and a lot of homeless people are Hawaiians that are suffering due to the price of living and challenges they faced in their life. Homeless In Hawaii : Facts and Resources. (n.d.). https://ltgov.hawaii.gov/homeless-in-hawaii-facts-and-resources/. United Nations. (n.d.). Stressing That Fallout from Conflict, Colonialism Drives Homelessness,. https://www.un.org/press/en/2020/soc4887.doc.htm. Imperialism means the state of policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other areas. I think that this changed our understanding of these things as we look at it from a cultural perspective and are thinking they are actually helping us instead of hurting us. When the Hawaiian Kingdom was taken over we lost our independence. As it unwillingly became a United States territory, it gained a larger population of foreigners than Native Hawaiians. The United States secured military advantage, economic enrichment, and the first territory outside of its boundaries. While on the other hand, the native people of the land were suffering with their Queen locked up in her own home, lost of the language and culture because of selfish people. |
