It is vital that resources and land can be leveraged by a group leader in the middle ages through leadership characteristics. This is illustrated when leaders like Alexander and Asoka expand their empires by using different resources around them. For example, “Using his disciplined cavalry and infantry in bold ways, Alexander fought his way through lands,” (Alexander DBQ, paragraph 4). Thus, Alexander took advantage of his army with horses, equipment, and skills that they had. Adding on, “In ten years, Alexander of Macedonia created the larges empire in the world up to that time. Alexander spread Greek culture, ensuring cultural diffusion and the survival of the qualities of classical Greece,” (AlexanderTheGreat, slide 11). This shows that his beliefs and values played a role in his victory in creating the largest empire and the people that he lead.

On the other hand, Asoka expanded his empire with his leadership characteristics. For instance, “Asoka taught and convinced people to love and respect all living things. He insisted on the recognition of the sanctity of all human life. He abolished the unnecessary slaughter or mutilation of animals,” (Asoka Powerpoint, slide 22). Also for example, “Ashoka was known as a great military strategist, and his army was extremely well organized. They used elephants to win many of their battles,” (ShreyasPatel, Samrat Ashoka the Great Indian king). This supports the argument by recognizing Asokaʻs values and how it affects his leadership. His leadership shapes his people's future and the lifestyles that they have that also indicates land and resource use. Therefore it can be seen that leadership characteristics have an impact on the heavy use of resources and land. Alexander and Asoka are examples of this, they input their beliefs, values, and views of the world into their leadership that change the dynamic of how their empire runs.

It can be argued that the leadership and character traits of a leader are able to affect the value systems of a group of people. This is apparent in studying the philosophy of Alexander the Great. In Flipped Lecture Notes #2 - Lā 7C Great Leaders Alexander vs Asoka, it was said that Alexander the Great did not force the Greek culture and language upon the peoples that he conquered. This literally allowed the people that he conquered to continue to live their own lives despite being under a new ruler. According to Susan Abernethy of The Freelance History Writer, “Alexander would take away the political autonomy of those he conquered but not their culture or way of life.” The Greek people and those that Alexander the Great conquered each had their own value systems which is the result of Alexander’s mentor, Aristotle.

A leader significantly affects the value systems of their group of people. This is apparent in how Adolf Hitler led Nazi Germany. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the Hitler Youth, or Hitler-Jugend, encompassed approximately 60% of all German boys. During the boys’ years as Hitler youth, they were trained to live the Nazi Doctrine, which included Hitler’s beliefs on racial purity. Many of the activities that the Hitler youth participated in were military training, with weapons training, assault course circuits, and basic tactics. The Hitler Youth were trained to remove social and intellectual distinctions between classes, to be replaced and dominated by the political goals of Hitler's totalitarian dictatorship. From this, it can be concluded that a leader’s philosophy and how they lead can affect their followers.

It is vital to know that geography can impact the resources a group controls. This is shown in Flipped Lecture #1 when it was describing ancient civilizations and their characteristics. An example of geography impacting resources is at the time in Egypt, they wrote of papyrus, a substance derived from the plant of the same name and in the Indus River Valley, they had technologies like building walls around their civilization to protect them from the flooding river. Each civilization offered something that other nations didn’t and that’s why civilizations made trade because based on where they live, they could only get what the land gave them and other things they needed, they trade with other civilizations to get things that their land can’t offer. This connects to the idea of geography impacting resources because in some places, you can grow something and other places you can’t grow something and this also impacts how civilizations evolve because they can’t make everything they need to survive, so they trade to make a good economy to evolve their civilization. In conclusion, geography impacts resources and how a civilization evolves.

On the other hand, geography can impact the economy of a civilization. According to Flipped Lecture #1, civilizations traded within each other to make an economy. If one place can produce highly needed things like clothes and other things, that civilization would have a better economy than other civilizations because they can produce what other places can’t. Like I said, each civilization offers something other nations can’t and if a nation can produce many different things that other nations can’t make, there are going to be many trades and as long as the trades keep going, that nation will have a greater economy than other nations. This connects to the idea of how geography can impact an economy because having good trades and keeping those trades up, builds a great economy because if they slack in trade, their economy is going to slack too but if they keep trades up, their economy will continue to improve. In conclusion, geography can impact the economy of a civilization.

It is vital to know that sustainability rights play a role in leveraging resources as civilizations grow because inorder to provide resources for the use of the present population without compromising the resources for future generations is vital because if the availability of resources is lessened for the future so will the population. Another big thing is making sure to not damage the environment so other ecosystems can continue to thrive and have a balance. UPPSALA stated in their paper on Natural Resources and Sustainable Development that “Civilizations in order to sustain themselves and continue to evolve require a sustainable amount of resources.” (UPPSALA) From this it can be concluded that if a civilization does not have a substantial amount of resources to keep it afloat and thriving, it will continue to sink and fade away into history.

Additionally National Geographic stated in their study of civilizations that “Civilizations expand through trade, conflict, and exploration. Usually, all three elements must be present for a civilization to grow and remain stable for a long period of time.” It is clear from this that civilizations inorder to grow need to trade with other nations, have conflict inorder to expand their territory and influence, and exploration to conquer new lands. In order for civilizations to complete all of these tasks they must accumulate a large amount of resources to continue growing and expanding to grow their territory. Overall we know that a civilization must have a sustainable amount of resources to grow and evolve, because without enough resources a nation can be just another page in a history book.
