-->What are some examples of how Capitalism & corporate economics (Walmart/Walgreens/Target, etc) is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue? -Corporate companies on Oʻahu had been making it harder to maintain our oceans for years. Each store used to give out plastic bags which would eventually end up in the oceans because of their lazy customers. -->Why is this something to consider: Do you see a specific (friends or family you know) with a personal connection to these issues that connect with poverty or other social challenges (and please try to find at least one) - what/who is it and why? - Friends and family that i know need to think about how the corporations and capitalism affect our natural environment -->What, if anything, are you learning about how economic trends impact your Global issue and how has your understanding of the impacts of it perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a worthwhile challenge or problem to be addressed - Seeing this problem with our ocean is partially caused with the economy of our own island, it has made me think more about how to deal with this problem. We canʻt influence the big companies to help but we can do something as a community to help make it better. What are some examples of how COLONIZATION OR GLOBALIZATION is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue?Colonization and Globalization is a major problem to our island and has made some real problems in our island and such. With all the businesses influencing the islands and our economy, have really damaged the nature in Hawaiʻi and such. These businesses have make it more common for people to litter in business areas and such.
Why is this something to consider: Do you see a personal connection to this (and please try to find at least one) - what is it and why? There are many personal connections to this personally because Globalization makes it harder, especially in Hawaiʻi, to keep our environment clean. What, if anything, are you learning about Colonization or Globalization and how has your understanding of the impacts of Colonization and/or Globalization perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a challenge or problem to be addressed? I am learning about the effects of having some people over from other countries and what they can do to our land. As hawaiians, we have some of the most crucial people living here because hawaiian people are almost extinct. This is because of the people that are invited here. They litter all over like at the beach, sidewalks, streets, yards and in the air. Not only is it trash but itʻs also from letting them build and keep it up forever. Factories and ships come in and pollute all over because the government lets this happen. If today was like ancient hawaii, weʻd be completely natural and healthy. Ever since the first foreigner stepped foot on the islands, itʻs been terrible and so much has happened since then. Not only in Hawaii but everywhere. America is one of the most trashiest place in the world just because they keep building and they donʻt care about anything except money and they rely on technology. We are back in school! Winter break was a great one for me, both academically and spiritually for me. I've been staying active by going to the beach and water parks. I also spent my time going to Judo and playing some baseball games. However, this break wasn't all happy thoughts.... when I first went to the beach three days into break, I was shocked to see the amount of pollution in Waikiki. Seeing this reminded me about the Kahiau project and our purpose. I picked up some of the trash out of the water. Sadly, my contribution doesn't make a dent in the huge problem of pollution. That is why for the rest of the break I tried to look up non-profit groups that do beach clean-ups and did research toward the project and how we can make a bigger impact. Bigger than me going to the beach every so often to pick up only so much by myself.
