Evolution To Revolution

Leadership character traits a leader carries affects the value system of a group of people. Civilizations either grow or fall depending on the traits that the person in charge has. Throughout history civilizations endure changes and great evolution when someone else is put in power and made their leader. The changes in power will change the belief system of a civilization because a leader will lead with the values they believe will be most beneficial. Ancient leaders such as Asoka who was a leader for his people did what he believed was best for his people, changed the religion of his civilization because he felt as though all the death and bloodshed occurring in the wars should not be happening. Asoka changed the value system from trying to conquer more land and expand his empire, to focusing on building the empire and living in peace. Similarly the aliʻi in Hawaii affected and changed the value system the people believed due to the morals and leadership traits they carry. One of these leaders is Princess Pauahi. Pauahi made drastic changes to the value system in Hawaiʻi throughout her life. Pauahi changed the value and belief system in Hawaiʻi from a polytheistic religion, to a monotheistic religion. She believed that the Western religion of Christianity and the belief of one God should be the main belief system in Hawaiʻi rather than the traditional Hawaiian religion of believing in multiple Gods. The Kamehameha schools website expresses that “Princess Pauahi was a devout believer of Jesus Christ and a faithful and compassionate leader of her Hawaiian people. Her life exemplified Christian and Hawaiian values'' (''Kamehameha Schools Christian Heritage | Bishop Memorial Chapel at Kamehameha Schools Kapālama Campus,” 2021). Pauahi was one of the first leaders in Hawaii who was a strong believer in one God other than many. Before her reign, many Hawaiians believed in multiple gods. “She said, “I also direct that the teachers of said schools shall forever be persons of the Protestant religion, but I do not intend that the choice should be restricted to persons of any particular sect of Protestants'' (''Kamehameha Schools Christian Heritage | Bishop Memorial Chapel at Kamehameha Schools Kapālama Campus,” 2021). Although many Hawaiians still do believe in many Gods such as Kū, Kanaloa, and Pele, many Hawaiians have either transitioned or prioritized the Christian religion lifestyle. Pauahi, just like Asoka, changed the value system of the people they lead because they felt as though it would benefit their civilization. Although many leaders have changed the value system of their civilization to something that was not beneficial, which led to their downfall, they all had traits which gave them the power to change what their people would believe in and prioritize. Many leaders of history used their leadership characteristic traits to alter the value system their people hold. |

Resources and ʻāina can be leveraged to make sure that the leader is making good/bad decisions based on their actions and to make sure that everything is organized and in control. Good or bad decisions reflect who the leader is and their traits. Their actions also reflect not only on what type of leader they are but what type of person they are. Leaders need to have good traits in order to have leverage over people, nations, etc… Asoka and Alexander the Great were both very powerful leaders but unique in their own way. Alexander the Great showed the traits ʻānunu, vengeful, and violent. ʻĀnunu means greedy and Alexander wanted to have power over others. He was selfish for taking up most of the land. He didn't care about his army's opinions, he cared about victory and power. He developed a rather high opinion of himself, including the growing belief that he himself was a God and came off very cocky and too confident. It wasnʻt his fault that he is like that. He grew up learning that way from his father. His father built and trained an army into a deadly fighting machine. Alexander followed his footsteps. Alexander was also very vengeful and violent. He burned a city of thieves to the ground, slaughtered all male inhabitants, and enslaved all the women and children. Yes, he was good at tearing down things, bad at building it back up. |
Alexander struggled with rebuilding what he destroyed where he had conquered. Asoka on the other hand has a different pathway. His actions showed the traits Aliʻi hoʻomalu pono and Lōkahi. He was also very smart and intelligent. In the beginning Asokaʻs story he was at war who used military power to become a great ruler of ancient India. He was known as a great military strategist which also helped keep his army organized. He was a very intelligent man who used elephants which benefited war. Aliʻi hoʻomalu pono means just and caring. Asoka showed this trait when he cared for his soldiers who were also well-paid and trained well. After he noticed how many lives were taken when he would conquer lands he turned away from war. From being this great, big, strong, powerful leader in war he became a gentle, loving, caring man for nature and his people. He taught people to care about living things, human life, banned sport hunting to protect wildlife, became vegetarian and more people followed. The resources/ʻāīna can be leveraged so that everything is organized and in control. Wise leaders try to gain and increase power to what they believe in best. Well-applied leverage entails influencing people toward getting positive results with minimal effort. Yes, it would be impacted by leadership character traits because in order to be a good leader they need to have good traits. You wouldnʻt follow a leader who doesnʻt do what is right. That could also lead to arguments and maybe sometimes even war. Even a good leader needs to care not only for themselves but for their nation/empire/army. Johannes Gutenburg's invented the printing press in 1440. The world was much better and easier including this technology. It was an easier way to communicate and share knowledge. This helped scientists share their discoveries through widely disseminated scholarly journals helping to bring out the scientific revolution. Because of it, authorship became more meaningful and profitable. Word of the printing press spread across the globe and people started making copies of it. This represents how Jhannes Gutenbrug was a genius. This increased knowledge around the world.

Geography impacts how people live and how they act and see the world. Majority of our resources come from the ʻāina back then and still to this day. Geography impacts what kind of land your region sits on and what they can live off of. If a group has bad land then not a lot of good valuable resources will come from it which leads to a leader not controlling good land. If it's by trade or language geography is also primarily the principle factor as to how civilizations have formed and evolved. Civilization and how they act with another group can be determined on their culture, their color, their religion and where they come from. Location is very important and can seriously be affected by geography. Because location is such a big area and a big part of life and is a big factor of surviving it can be taken away at any moment. In flip lecture guns germ and steel it says “Fertile crescent: Villages were abandoned, Climate was too dry, Unable to farm their land they were forced out” (final #5 CNOTES: Guns Germs and Steel Notes & Reflection, 2021). This shows that because it was so dry they had to leave everything they had because of geography. Europeans conquered so much of the globe and the Geography was the shape of the condiments the crops and animals that made some cultures to flourish and other to suffer. “Pizarro and his men were geographically blessed as spaniards, enjoyed the benefit of technologies and ideas that had spread easily across Eurasia” (final #5 CNOTES: Guns Germs and Steel Notes & Reflection, 2021). When the First europeans that climbed the Andes & ventured this far into the continent of south America They get to Inca and the Indians never seen white men before, The Incas stretched along the Andes as know as Ecuador to central Chile. With the incas not knowing who the first europeans were they let them in made them feel welcome because they were riding on their horse while the incas eat theirs. They invited |
them in not knowing that the first europeans would slaughter them. The first Europeans took advantage of the Incas and used them. The Incas weren't in the middle of a city or close to other groups so they were not educated on who to trust. The Incas were killed just because they let people in that they thought were good people just because where they live, they don't interact with anyone beside who else lives with them. All because of the land and location people needed to leave everything they worked hard for because their land wasn't good to live on.

The role that the Sustainability rights would play in leveraging ʻāʻina resources as civilizations grow and evolve is to show how the rights can be applied when using the ʻāʻina resources in an effective way to colonize a better future. Using these ʻāʻina resources in an effective way can completely save a civilization that was once struggling with many things and the sustainability rights are an example of this. For example a civilization that is made up of a lot people is poverty, poverty can completely change if a civilization were to use their ʻāʻina resources, using these resources can build homes for those who donʻt have one along with finding natural food that grow on plants or that are in the ocean for those who are dying from hunger (Sustainable Development Goals | United Nations Development Programme, 2017). Using ʻāʻina resources is critical to a civilization when talking about sustainability rights and how it affects a civilization that is failing. The sustainability rights play a role in every civilization from those in the past to today in modern day and by being resourceful and using ʻāʻina resources, it can completely change a civilization for the better. The Rise of the Empire
(Contributed by Mariyah Mossman)
The geographic region in which an empire is settled on can motivate another empire to want to control that region. It is important to know where a region is located to ensure the success of the empire settled in that area. One thing that may motivate a nation to control other regions would be the natural resources in that region. These resources include food, water, temperature, and shelter. A nation is not going to try to control an area with bad resources, or an area in which the nation can help a population survive. New Guinea is a place that not many empires have tried to control and conquer and that's for many reasons but one of the reasons is that the farming there is not easy. The video on Guns Germs & Steel states, “Island agriculture was based on crops like these taro roots which are very different from cereal crops. Taro is much more work in which you need to plant one by one unlike wheat where you throw your hand and spread the seeds. These New Guinea crops cannot be stored for years the way wheat can'' (GG&S, 7:28- 7:54). New Guinea is not an easy place to live. The people of New Guinea still use the hunter-gather technique which is an inconsistent way of living. According to the video, it is hard to provide for a large population from hunting and gathering because it does not provide enough calories for the people. These are some of the reasons that New Guinea was not taken over by another nation. |
(Contributed by Mariyah Mossman) Nations tend to attempt to control regions in which they can thrive off of. A nation will not attempt to control a region that will not be valuable to their empire's success. Nations tend to build off of the previous nation's way of living. The Abbasid empire took the Umayyads hierarchy and ran with it throughout their reign. In my FLʻs I state “The Abbasids replaced the Umayyads in 750 CE and no one could defeat them until 1258 when the Mongols conquered them. The Abbasids kept the idea of a hereditary hierarchy but the capital of the empire was moved to Baghdad. They welcomed non-Arab Muslims. They were also open to foreigners and the ideas they came with” (Mossman, 2). Empires will take a previous nation's way of living if they feel that that will ensure their success. Natural resources are also a big part of this issue because a nation wants the best for their people. An empire is not going to attempt to take over land in which people can't survive off of. |

Religion is very important to most cultures and empires. Religion impacts the way people think and act. In certain religions you can't do certain things and some you can do whatever. Religion and belief impact how people gain control, their decisions and how they lead their empire. For example in the movie The Kingdom of Heaven they go into war because of the land of Jerusalem all because of their religion. They fought because they both wanted Jerusalem. The Christians wanted Jerusalem because it was where Jesus was born. The muslims wanted it because that was where most of their profit was from. This affects them both deeply because they want to take control of a land and society all because it influenced and impacted their religion and beliefs. Next example is that these crusades were motivated by religion. “were not a “holy war” on the part of Europeans against Islam, but in important ways the Crusades were driven by religious faith.” (Copy of FL 5 [Template] Kingdom of Heaven - Discussion & Viewing Guide, 2021). The crusades were not successful with the war they wanted. This impacted |
the control on other societies because with their strong drive and passion for religions they went trained well enough and they didn't fight as well because their minds were occupied with other thoughts about their religion and beliefs. The crusaders were also promised and promised people money and they ended up walking out of the fourth crusade with less than what they came with. If they didn't work so hard showing people they are strong believers of their religion and spent more time preparing things might have ended up differently. That is how religion and belief affected/impacted decisions and policies of control over another society throughout these years.
(Contributed by Sami-Maimiti Anderson) Technology and new weapons can strongly affect one's society, belief and religion. In the obvious it can affect because with new findings the religions can choose not to use them and use what they are used to while the enemies use more advanced weapons and technologies so there for you religion and empire, and society will suffer. With some countries coming up with these new tech and weapons the people would go to make trade so they could also have these new weapons for war. Trade causes people such as the europense to spread around the world causing diseases and religion to spread. Trade can also lead to trading |
and teaching people about their religion and in overall just teaching people about their beliefs and region. In the Empires project my group did research about the Mayans. The Mayans religion was very strong. They believed in “heaven, earth, underworld, the Skies, Heaven: Heaven was the home of the gods. A piece of heaven was reserved for the Maya afterlife. If the Maya people did not worship in the right way, the demons would be released and able to leave the underworld and attack the Maya people.” (final #5 CNOTES: Guns Germs and Steel Notes & Reflection, 2021). Although their beliefs were stored they didn't allow that to take hold of how they fight or how they interact with other countries in a bad way. That is how religion and values impact their decisions and policies of control over another society with the influence from technologies.

In Gun, Germs & Steel the European settlers made a huge difference when they forced Africans to build railroads for them. This made a huge difference in the control of the Africanʻs society because they were forced to work for the European settlers who didnʻt know how to survive in the conditions of the Africans and in this they made them build railroads for trains and transportation. The Africans that refused to work for the European settlers in building railroads for them were hurt badly and some were shot to death. This made a huge difference in the both the African society and the European society because the Africanʻs at the time had a very thriving economy at the time probably one of the best in the world and with these trains going on railroads where these Africans once lived meant that the Europeans took everything, all of their resources and left them with nothing. Today many Africans die at a very early age due to many illnesses that they once had a cure for but no longer due and Africa is a very poor country as a whole and a big part of that has to do with what happened during Guns, Germs & Steel. This is how Europeans controlled the African region. (Kingdom of Heaven by Amien Juugo - Home of the Alternative Movie Poster -AMP- | Heaven art, Poster art, Kingdom of heaven, 2021) |

In the Kingdom of Heaven the leader that changed and made a huge difference in the Muslim society was Balian. Balian made a huge difference however he wouldn't even be in the position that he was able to get in without his brother and Godfrey. His brother who he killed near the beginning of the movie told him that he was not welcome to live where he was because of all of the bad that he had done and told him that he needed God. He would then take his brother's word after killing him and follow Godfrey and his fellow companions and they were on a journey to the Holy Land where Balin would be freed of all of his sins and become a holy man. This is how his journey started to him becoming a great leader in the Muslim society and would fight for his people and land to conquer other empires and take there land and keep expanding until he became the true leader of all empires and they would surrender to him. By Balian being the leader of Muslimʻs in religion he impacted many lives. (Pizarro Seizing the Inca of Peru, 2020). |

Looking deeper into UN sustainability rights and 17 goals they talk about the right thing to do. These goals can help improve mankind after the enlightenment period by guiding people into doing what is right. It shows people the way of freedom of speech, equality, freedom of press, religious tolerance, and more. Humanity could and can be improved through rational change. Couple of the goals out of the 17 goals are zero hunger, clean water and sanitation, and no poverty. The contribution of science to end poverty has been significant. For example, it has enabled access to safe drinking water, reduced deaths caused by water-borne diseases, and improved hygiene to reduce health risks related to unsafe drinking water and lack of sanitation. The First Poverty Enlightenment was in the 20 or so years prior to the turn of the 19th century. Popular critiques of prevailing social hierarchies blossomed in London and Paris, in the latter case famously culminating in the French Revolution. These goals are to help guide and protect people in life. |

The next logical step after the enlightenment period for mankind is to change the perspective of the world for them. The enlightenment period produced numerous books, essays, inventions, scientific discoveries, laws, wars and revolutions which helped with our critical thinking. The Enlightenment helped combat the excesses of the church, establish science as a source of knowledge, and defend human rights against tyranny. It also gave us modern schooling, medicine, republics, representative democracy, and others. This helped improve life and made life easier. Now that technology is more sophisticated and has evolved over time, new inventions and ideas started to improve. It was easier for people to learn and gain knowledge now that books evolved by the printing press. Innovation has made it simpler to cultivate, more doable to assemble urban areas, and more advantageous to travel, among numerous different things, adequately connecting all nations on earth, assisting with making globalization, and making it simpler for economies to develop and for organizations to work together. Things improved from the enlightenment period and it was easier for mankind to do things and that changed the perspective of the world. |

Expansion & Revolution
(Contributed by Mariyah Mossman)
Karl Marx and his enlightenment thinking impacted the outcome of the Industrial Age because he wrote and developed anti-capitalist books and literature that the workers working under these manufacturers were being treated very harshly and were working under circumstances in which were not fair. Marx also understood that the Industrial Revolution was creating an unstable system that would lead to the revolution collapsing.Nona Stiltner of Enotes states, “Karl Marx was an important figure during the industrial revolution in his anti-capitalist analysis of industrialization. Marx developed and published anti-capitalist literature that details how workers are inherently exploited and oppressed under the capitalist system” (Nona, 2011). Karl Marx & Marxism were both very important aspects of the enlightenment theory throughout the Industrial Age. Karl Marx also believed that the class stratification which capitalism and the Industrial Revolution established the rich to get richer and the poor will stay poor. In my FL #8 I state, “Karl Marx sided with the proletariat because he saw them as being treated unfairly by the factory owners. He also saw the system which tried to keep the poor poor and make the rich get richer. He views the capitalist society as a system that is based on inequality” (Mossman, 2021). Karl Marx established communism because of the terrible system of capitalism which circled the world. |
(Contributed by Mariyah Mossman) Money was the main root of the class stratification through the Industrial Revolution. The more money you had, the higher you were in the placement of the social class. Karl Marx believed that there were three different groups of people. In my FL #8 I stated, “The factory owners were the highest class, the middle class which were ordinary people and he referred to them as the bourgeoisie, and then the lowest class which was the working class and they were referred to as the proletariat” (Mossman, 2021). Capitalism established the social stratification which was going on throughout the factories. The factory owners exploited and oppressed the people they had working in their factories in order to stay in the high class. In my FL #8 I state, “People in power use the people below them to benefit themselves, and the income of money they have. Meaning that someone with high power will benefit off of the ability of the people below them. Like Karl Marx states, this is how the rich get richer, and the poor stay poor” (Mossman, 2021). |

Some of the leaders of the American Revolution were influenced by Enlightenment ideas which are, freedom of speech, equality, freedom of press, and religious tolerance. American colonists did not have these rights, in result, they rebelled against England for independence. An alignment is a forcible overthrow of a government or social order, in favor of a new system, refers to a movement, often violent, to overthrow an old regime and effect. complete change in the fundamental institutions of society. For example the Europeans were just more advanced in almost everything. Evidence from the video“Europeans are just better and smarter than other people.”(Copy of < TEMPLATE> Exploration, Exchange, Expansion, Enlightenment & Colonization, 2021),“... they had the culture of science and invention that made the creation of these revolutionary technologies possible.”(Copy of < TEMPLATE> Exploration, Exchange, Expansion, Enlightenment & Colonization, 2021), “freer |
political institutions encouraged innovation and strong property rights created incentives for inventors.”(Copy of < TEMPLATE> Exploration, Exchange, Expansion, Enlightenment & Colonization, 2021), and “often cite Europe’s small population because small populations require labor-saving inventions.”(Copy of < TEMPLATE> Exploration, Exchange, Expansion, Enlightenment & Colonization, 2021). How Exploration, Expansion connects to this concept is because journey of enlightenment around the world: when there made in different countries they get passed to another country and it continues even after we use it it still bounces around from place to place experienced important transitions that would alter societies, including major religions, the social hierarchies, and the rise and fall of empires. With these changes, some of the ideas of society stayed consistent like the desire for luxury goods by the upper class. This shows how evolution has impacted the age of revolution.

Ideas can change anyone's perspective or even their belief. Revolutionary ideas affect the whole world with what happened and how they made it happen. With all the weapons they made while in war and all their new findings that caused the people to use more not good for the earth substance to make it work. Since the industrial revolution, humans have expelled copious amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This has triggered an unnatural warming that has seen the Earth's temperature rise dramatically over a short period of time. The average global temperature was 12˚C during the Last Glacial Maximum. It could've all started in one particular area and trade through the silk road ended up everywhere. The silk road gained people access to getting what is benefiting the other countries. For example, the Silk Road in China with the West between Rome and China. Silk went westward, and wool, gold, and silver went east. Now that point was to show how they moved along the silk road. A Lot of separate revolutions started because they wanted to go and fight with other |
revolutions had because a lot of revolutions impacted other regions to start their own. With them wanting more advanced weapons they would and could go to war and trade. With everyone wanting them when they got it and everyone ended up getting it there was always a country who also was 10 steps ahead making new weapons and that is happening to this day. With weapons and new technology and new ways to get around chemicals are being used and causing the global climate to get bad and so bad to a point where it may never go back down.

Yes there are many common factors that contribute to inciting the age of revolutions. Yes I see these factors appearing in America and Hawaiʻi today. Exploration is one factor that contributes to inciting the age of revolutions because the Europeans traveled and explored different countries for various resources which is responsible for many of the resources that we have today. Some other common factors that contribute to inciting the age of revolutions are POC or (People of Color) and past leaders paving the way for the many rights that we have today. POC has contributed to inciting the age of revolutions because during these times of revolutions POC were treated much like they are now with the racism and the BLM movement. Past leaders who changed the revolutions in their favor have also changed many of the rights that we have in modern day America, such as freedom, having independence to express ourselves and rights that we never owned before (Copy of Group 1 - Age of Revolutions Comparison Chart & Notes, 2021). The BLM movement was global and did affect Hawaiʻi along with having many of the rights that we have now came from the leaders from these revolutions. With exploration comes many consequences, a big one being diseases, for example when Captain Cook arrived in Hawaiʻi in the 1700ʻs most of our Hawaiian population had died out for the diseases they brought. George Floyd was one of many innocent black lives lost and what really started protests and a movement to give POC the freedom and rights that everyone else deserves, and is a prime example of an innocent man killed just because of the color of his skin. We are free to speak our mind and give our opinion in certain situations, this is a right that we have and can freely express and these are examples of what our past leaders have sacrificed and given to us. Exploration, POC or (People of Color), leadership are all common factors that contribute to inciting the age of revolutions. These factors continue to appear in both America and Hawaiʻi today. The resources that have been traded helped improve their revolution and society. In the Industrial Revolution and Scientific Revolution trade has been invented that trades food, clothes, resources, people, diseases and more. The Industrial Revolution was an increase in production brought about by the use of machines and characterized by the use of new energy sources. European government endeavors to mine coal, and the impacts of the Rural Upheaval. The main thing that impacted the energy was coal. “It provided an efficient fuel for reliably turning iron ore into iron. The resulting steamships and railway locomotives reduced the time and cost of bringing coal into factories and taking their products to British export |
markets across the globe” (FL #8 Impacts Industrial Revolution on Class Dichotomy & Scientific Revolution on Steam & Coal, 2021). Was an overland route where merchants carried goods for trade, a network of trade routes. Silk was only produced in China. Used for fishing line, to buy off nomadic raiders to keep things peaceful, and to write before they invented paper. Although silk was made for clothes. “Impacts were transfer of goods from region to region, transfer of disease into pandemics that helped to control the worldʻs population, transfer of people from place to place, transfer of ideas like religions and cultures from region to region” (FL 9 Exploration, Exchange, Expansion, Enlightenment & Colonization, 2021). Spice trade traded cinnamon, peppercorn, Chile peppers, brought wealth and access to foreign products, facilitated the spread of religious traditions beyond their original homelands, facilitated the transmission of disease, exchange of ideas, impacts of the printing press, exchange of people and culture, and exchange diseases. The improvement of resources helped affected nations in good and bad ways.

Cash crops have been around for so long and impacted the Industrial and Scientific Revolution time. Cash crops were super important during this time because it is a source of earning foreign exchange and provides raw materials for other sectors of the economy and generates employment to a large number of people. Cash crop is a crop produced for its commercial value rather than for use by the grower. About 10,000 years BC, people harvested their food from the natural biological diversity that surrounded them, and eventually domesticated crops and animals. Over thousands of years farmers selected for desirable traits in crops, and thus improved the plants for agricultural purposes. After the crops were harvested, many farmers stored the corn and grain in bins while they watched the market price. “Spice trade traded cinnamon, peppercorn, Chile peppers, brought wealth and access to foreign products, facilitated the spread of religious traditions |
beyond their original homelands, facilitated the transmission of disease, exchange of ideas, impacts of the printing press, exchange of people and culture, and exchange diseases” (FL 9 Exploration, Exchange, Expansion, Enlightenment & Colonization, 2021). Farming differs from cash crop farming as cash crops are grown mainly for direct selling and profit-making. During the Industrial and Scientific Revolution cash crops helped improve materials and resources.
