Colonization affected our Kahiau project in kinda a bad way. Before colonization Hawai'i has had national sovereignty. Hawaiians were a people of self sustainability. Prior to western contact the native Hawaiians economy was doing just fine. After contact with the Western foreigners it brought western diseases killing off most of Hawai'i's population. This was not only a tremendous decline in culture it also brought a decline to Hawaii's economy and a bad economy directly affects poverty. Then the overthrow happened kinda forcing upon Hawai'i that it's main economy would be based on the sole thing of tourism . This causes a lot of problems especially in todays modern world especially with the covid-19 pandemic. Because people couldn't travel , thats most of Hawai'i's economy gone already. Then people started losing jobs and then there becomes an increase in poverty. Croix, S. L. (n.d.). Economic History of Hawai'i. Retrieved from https://eh.net/encyclopedia/economic-history-of-hawaii/ Through the eyes of the westerners imperialism doesn't seem that bad and might seem okay to some. Yet imperialism has affected the hawaiian culture tremendously. For example while the kingdom of Hawai'i was being overthrown, the hawaiian language was banned and wasn't allowed to be spoken without punishment. This gave the hawaiian culture a loss in language, in fact it wasn't even until 1978 where Hawaiian was re-established as an official language of the state of Hawaii and, in 1990, the federal Government of the United States adopted a policy to recognize the right of Hawaii to preserve, use, and support its indigenous language. This cause almost lost the Hawaiian language. Showing imperialism affects native hawaiians till this day on reviving our culture. Hawaiian Language. (n.d.). Alternative Hawaii. The Industrial age & the Revolutions that occur because of it, like the French Revolution, set up my groups kahiau project pretty well. With revolutions and the industrial age brought an increase in the economy. With a thriving economy brings more jobs and more stable ways of finance. Throughout history when there why a rise in the average level of income in a country's economic growth is so crucial for reducing poverty. So in a sense the Industrial age & the Revolutions that occurred helped our kahiau project. Roser, M. (n.d.). How much economic growth is necessary to reduce global poverty substantially? Art has many shapes and forms but, I believe it is important for activism. This is because in my opinion art is a universal language that everyone can understand to an extent. Wether it be music, a painting or dance, everyone can sense a mood or vibe it gives off, so even though it may be unfamiliar you can understand it. Activism through art has been around for a long time yet in today's modern world I believe works perfectly. An art-based approach is a positive alternative because it stimulates empathy. Empathy is necessary to achieve social and environmental justice. To effect real change, activism need to work through cultural means. Additionally Art sets an image, and if we want the world to change we have to imagine and see what would change look like. Through this these ideas and ideals inspire us to get up and out in the morning to change the world, and attract others to work with us.I believe that both World History and Current Event Advocacy are important but, a majority of Current event advocacy comes from the past of world history. Theres the saying we can learn from our mistakes and the past or the World history is something we can learn from. We can see how or if they handled the problem in the past and see where we can build off from that and try to advocate ourselves for the solution. One thing I learned from RYWC is that our voices can be heard. Our generation is strong and through each other we can advocate and fight for a word we want to live in. They also taught us even us kanaka of Hawai’i can have a voice and advocate for ourselves. If we come together we can create any solution for any problem. Thanks to Kumu Jess who works with RYWC for letting us explore the world of advocacy, through many different outlets, letting us know any 1975_08. (n.d.). The Silk Road earned its name from Chinese silk, a highly valued commodity that merchants transported along these trade networks.
