From Evolution to Revolution
Some of the native traditions from the movie FRPF when we were following Molly is that they found their own way of surviving off of the land and finding food such as lizards and also shelter. We also see how they use the sky to help them guide their way home and also their surroundings. The difference in modern day society is that not a lot of people go outside to hunt & gather food but more go to grocery stores that prepare it and it isn't much hard work. Also over time technology became a new way to help people find their way around like google maps and is more easier than using the sky to help guide them. The pros of new technology & to grocery stores are that it is easy and accessible so there is no effort to put in. The cons are that being able to find your way without google maps is a survival tool because not all the time will you have access to them like if you get lost and there is no service, just like how if you need to find food and there is no grocery store there. So it is important to learn these skills and not just depend on them because one day you might end up in a situation where they are not available.
As far back as we can remember, our native lands were filled with lucious loʻi kalo and gardens that were used to sustain the villages of our kūpuna. Our ancestors were taught the skills needed to not only sustain themselves but to also keep those techniques and pass them down to the next generations. The “hunter/gatherer mindset” was embedded in their minds for that's the only way they knew. Whether it was fishing, hunting, farming, raising animals, etc. they knew that they needed to get done in order to keep the village flourishing. Although, in our current society today, that is not the case. Our modern-day society in Hawaiʻi is dependent on receiving products and goods from outside places. Being that we are located in the middle of the ocean, we have little to no resources needed to sustain everybody. Therefore, our state is dependent on large companies like Matson and Young Brothers to bring in our food and resources. It is important to understand this shift from this native “hunter/gatherer mindset” (our native mindset) to what our society is like now because we donʻt have the necessary resources on our islands to build those farms or even have the money to create new resources because of how everything works today. This helps us to navigate and balance when shopping by being more cautious of the products we're buying and remembering to support our local businesses/companies who do provide resources. We can also find a good balance between buying things we need and looking for better options when shopping. This shift in mindset from old to new can also be applied in our future schooling and how we sustain our present and future families from now and beyond. Going to school and getting a better education/career can help us to create a firm foundation for ourselves and our future families. We can flourish and teach our children about the importance of remembering those native mindsets.
Our Kahiau Project was gender equality and in studies they say “Women are of vital importance to rural economies… they are responsible for some 60% to 80% of food production in developing countries. In many farming communities, women are the main custodians of knowledge on crop varieties.” This shows that farming is carried on the back of our women and without them, men would have to learn all of the knowledge women have and that could push us back many years. Women are too important in our communities for us to be pushing them down. Without them in a time like this, with the pandemic, a lot of our food resources would be low on food because there wouldn’t be as much farming going on, especially if we aren’t able to get our processed foods we are so used to eating nowadays. Women should deserve equal opportunities in things they want to pursue because of how much they have already done for this country.

Impacts of Religion, Culture, Enlightenment, & Exchanges through Expansion.
During the time of the silk road and the events of Exploration and Exchanges, many were put to work to trade and move along the path to different places with their goods. Back then women were given the tasks to take care of their family and tend to tasks while their husbands were working but there were also women who contributed to these jobs. Women took part in manufacturing and trading while also keeping up with their roles as wives and mothers, holding their household together. This impacts our Kahiau issue because here we can see women not only taking part in jobs but also playing a large role in this event in time. Back then especially, women were usually the ones who did not work for the man provided and the women took care of the man/family. Although, many women were heavily involved in the work of the Silk Road.
Understanding history has huge value in finding solutions to our modern day challenges because as it says in the video, “you can apply information from the past to analyze and solve problems in the present.” By knowing what happened in the past, we can analyze what we did wrong and how we can fix it. We can look at the details, all the small details that put us in that situation, we can think outside of the box and come up with a real world solution. History also gives us an understanding of other people and seeing things from their perspective. Seeing things from others perspectives is huge because if we can’t do that, then we are just gonna stay one track minded and nothing will ever get solved. By putting yourself in someone else's shoes, you allow yourself to have empathy for them and it gives you the hunger to want to do something about it. This can connect to our Kahiau project because we can look back at the past and see what we did wrong and fix our wrongs. We should also put ourselves in womens shoes and see how hard it must be to make a living with less oppurtunities.

Competition for Resources in a Global Society
World war I caused huge numbers of deaths and hurt so many countries. It had so much destruction and it killed around 20 mil people. That a little over 13 times the amount of people on Hawaiʻi. But was it the war to end all wars with that amount of destruction? No, world war I was not the war to end all wars. One obvious reason why is because there was a world war II. The treaty of Versailles was the peace treaty that ended world war I but it also was the groundwork that started world war II. This treaty placed the blame on Germany and made them pay huge fines which did not sit well with them.
I think that the point of using their knowledge to help create things that could potentially kill many does not make sense but at the same time it does. When you look at it in their lense you can see that they did this to help them in world wars and utilize them for future occurrences. It also does not make sense to how they would use their knowledge to create a destructive weapon because they could possibly kill themselves and many others if they made a mistake. This impacts my modern Kahiau issue at a global level because there have been many protests that included using weapons that caused more violence in the past but as we learn from the past we also know that now in our modern age violence is not needed to make a clear statement that would be heard. It impacts globally because people around the world have many different views on this and some might say that violence is the only way for people to notice what you want to say. Nowadays people hold signs, walks, speech, etc, to help get their point across and many have succeeded in this form. "We may never be strong enough to be entirely nonviolent in thought, word and deed. But we must keep nonviolence as our goal and make strong progress towards it." -Gandhi. This quote from ghandi further explains the point of non violence to get your point heard.
After learning about World War 1 and 2, we learned that there is no exact “plan” for the decisions of war and peace, but peace is all up to us. All those things that were essentially dividing our country and dividing our people were not figured out nor resolved. The conflict between those social dividers in our society were not brought down which eventually led to more and more conflict. From this, we see the prime example of “...peace is all up to us” because the issues between the people and all within our own society were simply not resolved therefore resulting in war/conflict, causing war. Connecting this to our own community, this also impacts our own local issues. Not only in ancient hawaiian days but also still to this day, there are many forms of conflict that lead to larger things. For example, hawaiians fighting against hawaiians. We all come from the same blood and we all originate from the same roots. There is no reason as to why we should be fighting with our own kind but when those social dividers are not resolved/brought down, then like we learned previously, there is gonna be conflict. We can fix this in Hawaiʻi by finding efficient solutions and finding ways to all come together as one to fight the problem not each other.

Final Group Reflection
Kiaʻi Kawai
One thing we can notice from being Pua a Pauahi off campus is that it is a rare and great opportunity that we are getting. There are 100’s of kids who didn’t get into this school, therefore they are not getting the opportunities we are receiving to further our education beyond high school. Some of the schools they go to don’t care if they get past high school and that sucks because some people just need that one person to believe in them and they might not have it. Education gets passed on from person to person so we could always remember what we learn and pass it along. We can be that one person that helps the hawaiian community to push through their struggles and help them with the opportunities we are getting. We can pass the knowledge down generations so that the mindset of Pauahi lives on.
Mailani Magbanua
One thing that I have learned about my own role as a Pua a Pauahi and a future graduate of Kamehamea is that we are embedded and provided with countless oppourtunies and skills as a student here on the hill. We are provided with opportunities all throughout our schooling to help us become leaders and to help us develop those skills to be those future leaders for our community. Coming from another island, and leaving my own community to go out and better my education, away from my parents was a struggle but it also helped me to learn that I am doing this for the betterment of myself and I am doing this to give back to my own community. I can utilize these skills taught to me to advocate for important issues in my own community by teaching those skills to the next generation of learners while also sharing my manaʻo with others. By sharing and cultivating that knowledge in my community, it will allow us to look in to solutions for problems and for me to share my skills learned.
