How does Colonization set up or impact your Kahiau Project topic as we see it globally throughout our study of history? Does this help or hurt our modern efforts to meet these challenges? Explain how or why? I think colonization did and still does have an impact on poverty, which is my UN Sustainability goal. Being colonized affects everyone and the land as well. Hawaiʻi was colonized and the lands are also being destroyed by modern technology, which is not helping Mother Nature. In Hawaiʻi, there is also a high poverty rate, which is because the government is not focused on helping them. They are more focused on building up new technology and billion dollar projects while people of Hawaiʻi are sleeping on the streets. So this hurts the modern efforts to meet these challenges. Received fromhttps://www.ozy.com/true-and-stories/how-the-american-empire-destroyed-the-kingdom-of-hawaii/74697/ How did/does Imperialism change our understanding of these things in History through the lens of our cultural history of language, culture, and activism in the community? Does it help us or deter us from navigating for a solution to these problems here in Hawaiʻi? Explain why. Imperialism changes our understanding of these things in History through the lens of our cultural history of language, culture, and activism in the community because the fight for power will always be present. Especially in governments and politicians, more of the focus is on power and what they have, but if they focus on what they don’t have, which is care and support for the people who are struggling everyday to live, then it’d be a healthier society. And I think realizing and understanding that this is the problem, it will help us to navigate a solution or solutions to the problems here in Hawaiʻi, starting with our homeless and poverty rates. How does the Industrial age & the Revolutions that occur because of it, like the French Revolution, set up or impact your Kahiau Project topic as we see it globally throughout our study of history? During the French Revolution, citizens razed and redesigned their country’s political landscape, uprooting centuries-old institutions such as absolute monarchy and the feudal system. The nobles in particular were unwilling to give up the privileges they enjoyed under the traditional system. Parisians grew panicked as rumors of an impending military coup began to circulate. This all impacts poverty because it is one of the causes. The politicians and Hawaiʻi government need to come together to focus on this issue because it is affecting more and more people each day. They also need to prevent this from happening, and they can do that by building more affordable housing for all, instead of a $12.4 billion dollar rail. All of that money could have went towards a greater cause. Now, there are more people in poverty and they are left struggling because of the decisions made by the government. History Editors. French Revolution. (2021). Received from https://www.history.com/topics/france/french-revolution. HNN Staff. Census: Nearly 200,000 Hawaii residents are living in poverty. (2019). Understanding these things in History as well as knowing our cultural history through language, culture, and activism in the community, helps us navigate for a solution of these problems here in Hawaiʻi because knowing the past helps us decide for the present and future. That is how we learn and looking back at the decisions that were made and what our islands and people went through, it is important that we don’ let history repeat itself. We wan better for our children and the generations to come. So, to solve this problem, we need to take a hard look at what we want for Hawaiʻi and look at the past for answers. We know what needs to get done and we have to do it. We also need our government’s help in doing this. But, I do believe that soon enough we can get our poverty rate down and those who faces poverty and homelessness will be helped. Hofschneider, Anita. High Costs Make Hawaii’s Poverty Rate Higher Than U.S Average. (2019). Received fromhttps://www.civilbeat.org/2019/09/high-costs-make-hawaiis-poverty-rate-higher-than-u-s-average/ The most important connection between World History and current event advocacy is that whatever is happening now, will become history. And it’s important to make sure that we set a good example for those who will look back at this time in history. I also think that if we keep sharing what is happening in our communities with the world, everyone can be informed and use that to help make their own decisions. I also think advocating current events can help everyone come together and try to solve or help the issue at hand. World History is also such an important subject in school because we all have to at least know about some of the major events in history. The most impactful idea that I gained from the Rock Your World Curriculum is to share our voices. It is so important to do this because we can help others who are going through things or are thinking the same things but just are scared to voice it. It’s also important to keep in mind that we all have our own way of thinking and creativity in our own ways. Also, sharing our thoughts and feelings or even solutions can help solve issues in the world. And if it doesn’t solve them, it’ll at least help spread some kind of idea and get others to do the same. I think the events of the Silk Road, Exploration, Expansion & Enlightenment impact the UN Goal & Kahiau Topic that I chose to study because we can help the poverty rates using what we learn from those events. Having a complex innovation like the Silk Roads can be a very big thing. Today, we could also use collective learning to help us increase our knowledge and expansion of technology. And with this knowledge, we can use it to help lessen the amount of people in poverty. Whether it's creating a system to help people who are in poverty get housing or necessities. I also feel that the events impact my Kahiau Topic because we've learned so much from them. And we continue to learn and create many new things for modern-day. I think looking back at the past and helping that knowledge with the present is so important. What we learned about the Age of Enlightenment can also help us with our government. The three central ideas were the use of reason, the scientific method, and progress. Especially during this pandemic, our government and people can use this knowledge to help us in this point in time. https://www.dosomething.org/us/facts/11-facts-about-global-poverty https://www.historycrunch.com/age-of-enlightenment-overview.html#/ |
