This project helped me to become/understand the concept of being a global citizen because we displayed qualities of a global citizen when we were taking part in our event. The definition of a global citizen is someone who helps to make an impact in the world to solve a problem. Animal abuse and animals getting abandoned are two very big problems that we helped to raise awareness for while doing our event. We researched the statistics and put them on our website so others could see them too. By doing this event and raising awareness for pet abuse, we got two dogs adopted and put into safe homes!
I think some of the patterns we did to help ourselves complete this event was always check in with each other to see how we were doing on our different tasks we were assigned. We also made a group chat so we could keep in contact with each other outside of school. Something I learned in the research process of it all, was that after time many owners become uninterested in their pets. I have never had a pet before, so I would never think that someone would just get "uninterested" in their pets, but they do. This leads to them being abandoned. I often see people very happy with their pets, so when I read the research about owners often leaving their pets on the door steps of shelters I was really shocked and felt sorry for the animals. In the beginning, I predicted that we were going to have our event take place at a park, and that we were going to have a lot of dogs all running around and having fun. But, as it turns out we ended up changing our event last minute to the Ewa Petco. There we only have about three dogs to play with and showcase, and two of the three dogs had to stay in their cages. However, the results ended well with two of the three dogs getting adopted! An effective long term plan for action is very important. If you want to make a change in the world, or an impact, a short term plan would not make a powerful enough change. Doing this event taught me a lot of things and I will remember this forever!

Originally, our plan was to hold our event at Moanalua dog Park, but something happened very last minute and we ended up changing our event to the Ewa Petco. All we did there was help out with the O'ahu SPCA people and their animals. Because of the last minute change, Alyssa wasn't able to come and do the event with us.
This project relates to being a global citizen because we are helping people to take notice of the amount of animal abuse there is in this world. Just a little event like this, to get dogs to come to a park so people can play with them and maybe think of adopting them, I think that's a pretty good thing to do, especially for high schoolers.
So far, in our project, we have done mostly everything we need to do. I just need to print the posters and post it on our social media account.
Right now, we are about two weeks away from our Petdoption event. Right now, I think all we need to do is make it known to the public about what we are planning! We're going to make announcements on social media, and make posters as well. I'm very excited!
We have almost everything together now, for our "Petdoption". We had a mini set back recently involving getting the permit for Oahu SPCA to use the animals at the park of our choice, but we got that cleared up. We also had an issue on when we could hold this event because weʻre all busy people, but we all agreed on a date together, which is April 30th. As of right now, we just need to make poster and start telling people about this and our cause so they show up!
Hi, my name is Teah Forsythe, and my team members are Alyssa, Miranda, Shaylin and Keely. Our Kahiau project is mainly about animals, hence the name "Petdoption".
So far, our group has emailed numerous parks to see where we can hold our main event. Moanalua Park, Mililani Park and Momilani Park has all responded, welcoming us to use their parks. As of right now, my group and I are figuring out which park we want to hold our event at. Another thing my group and I did was call Oahu SPCA, which is the dog shelter, if we could use some of their animals for this event. We have yet to hear a reply from them. |
