The skills and content I learned in World History this year was valuable and interesting. The first semester, I started this journey by learning what history actually is. This showed how impactful history can be other than just restating the past to students. Then throughout the course, I gradually started to learn the aspects of history and WHY such events happened. Religion, government, colonization, imperialism, and more. These aspects of the introduction of history are important for students to better internalize and to see how history can truly repeat itself when the world is trying to do the opposite. History comes back to many of the same conflicts, propositions, and agreements that the world we live in today can better enhance the future and not make any mistakes that already happened in the past. Two new skills that I learned that I might use in other classes or in my future endeavors are leadership and cooperation. Throughout the year, we were put into many group activities and even without those activities, the class would still cooperate and make sure that everyone is on the same track. Also, this school year involved the workings of Photoshop and Illustrator to make posters on certain leaders; whether it was worldwide leaders or Hawaiian leaders. What I liked best about Photoshop are the tools used to edit pictures that help to put them together in Illustrator. What I like about Illustrator is the fact that itʻs easy to put many things together and portray an acceptable, final piece to present.
An interesting topic that weʻve learned so far this year is Gandhi. According to this response by Olen Bruce, “Gandhi's purpose was to fight for the freedom of India from Great Britain using non-violence. He also wanted to advance the idea of satyagraha, or passive resistance, to help oppressed people. He also believed in peace and cooperation between people of different religions.” This shows that as an individual, it could be possible to obtain world peace without conflict between people along with the fact that people have different perspectives of the world so it should be pointed out that people are people and should all be treated the same. The Kahiau project connects skills with history and current-day issues by showing how the STGs can tie into the reasons for the outcomes of certain events in history. This is very helpful to make it more engaging because, with the Kahiau project and the Kahiau groups that were assigned, different ideas came together to hear different perspectives on situations. For example, in the activity, a partner and I did understand Reduced Inequality. We participated in a beach cleanup group for a day and little did we know, this was an international group for beach clean-ups. We learned that because of the environment and the events that led up to todayʻs beaches being polluted. We learned that Reduced Inequality ties into this beach clean-up by the factors of human instinct and global warming. Overall, things tend to be more active, fun, and attentive when working with a group and also working with modern-day problems. This helps to better understand history and not just regular history, world history.
