Non- Profit Organization: 808 Cleanups
Purpose: Our purpose is to restore the ocean back to its purest and most serene state. The oceanʻs health is slowly decreasing along with the marine life in it. We hope to raise awareness of this issue and get more people to participate in beach cleanups, or organize events such as beach cleanups them self.
Issue we are addressing: Our UN Goal is Life Below Water, as a group of 4 and more when working with the 808 cleanups nonprofit we hope to restore Hawaii’s natural beauty by conducting decentralized cleanups at Makai and more responding to littering and vandalism of Hawaiʻi’s natural spaces, saving Hawaiʻi’s indigenous ecosystem through education, and building sustainable solutions with community partners. This is our group's passion because as children we grew up with the ocean and it brought out the happiest of times from within us. Now as teenagers we can see a drastic change in the oceanʻs marine life and overall health. We want to restore the ocean to its most beautiful state so children the children of tomorrow can play in the beautiful ocean like we once did

Ocean Pollution
Global Statistics:
Ocean pollution is one of the most unfortunate events and problems that marine life faces. The majority of the garbage that enters the ocean each year is plastic—and here to stay. That’s because unlike other trash, the single-use grocery bags, water bottles, drinking straws, and yogurt containers, among eight million metric tons of the plastic items we toss (instead of recycling), won’t biodegrade. Instead, they can persist in the environment for a millennium, polluting our beaches, entangling marine life, and getting ingested by fish and seabirds. Our human pollution is killing the marine life that is essential for keeping balance in the ecosystem. In 2015, the International Coastal Conservancy group collected about 800,000 plastic bottle caps, almost 1 million plastic bottles, and about a half million of plastic bags and drinking straws from the shoreline. The ocean provides a home to various marine species, each and every one of us have the responsibility to take care of the ocean and its inhabitants.
Local Statistics:
Ocean pollution in Hawaii specifically is growing throughout the islands. Since 1994 waste and litter has increased 77% on beaches. With pollution spreading and increasing in the Hawaiian islands native sea animals, such as the Hawaiian monk seal and the Honu, are being harmed. When nitrogen is leaked in the our oceans it causes the Honu’s to form tumors because they have contracted a high concentration of nitrogen which cause them to die slowly. Also Hawaiʻi is known as one of the dirtiest places in the world. On the island’s southeastern side of the Big Island, Kamilo Point looks like a wasteland, despite its tide pools and pockets of lava rock. The ocean’s currents and powerful trade winds causes thousands of pounds of “man-made” trash on this beach each year. These so-called patches of trash are a result of oceanic and atmospheric pressures that push free-floating items in the ocean ― sea life, pollution, tiny pieces of plastic ― into one general area. This is why it is our responsibility to take care of our oceans, we have to take action soon or it will get worse.
Local v.s. Global Statistics
Ocean pollution is the spreading of harmful substances into the ocean causing the marine life to have a difficult time living. Due to plastic, chemicals, oils, and many harmful things it causes the ocean to get dirty and affect the world. Starting off with Hawaii, Hawaii is known to have one of the dirtiest oceans in the world. Statistically shown roughly “an estimated 8 million metric tons of discarded plastics turning up in the ocean every year, Lamson says, humans are the only ones who can stop it from pouring into the sea” (Huffington Post). This proves that Hawaii goes through a lot of trash a year, not only in the trash can but also in the ocean. All around the world there is much trash that somehow ends up in the ocean, creating many deaths of the marine life. From Huffington Post it states that, “Over 50% of the waste in more than 60 countries worldwide was found to be inadequately managed” (Huffington Post). It shows that a large part is from Hawaii, but also more than over 60 countries. Making the world become dirtier and dirtier by the minute. Which isn’t good for anyone because soon we will all inhale or digest parts of the waste causing us to get a sickness or even death.
808 Cleanups and Our Kahiau Groups Connections
HISTORY
808 Cleanups formed during the year of 2014. This is what leads them to have the innovation and drive to clean the land and take care of the ‘āina. From here they work on more projects to help out the island and keep it clean for all of us to live a happy and successful life. From here they will only grow and soon we will rid our islands of all the ʻōpala and live in peace. 808 Cleanups travel all around the island making sure they can help anyway possible and from this they grow and grow. Becoming a very successful non profit organization.
THREE STATISTICS WHY ITʻS LOCAL:
The Hawaiian islands being in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is where trash and waste come and go. According to the Huffington Post, the Hawaii Wildlife Fund has collected 15,000 pounds of waste that include: trash, nets, and fishing equipment. Waste is becoming more evident since 1994 and has increased by 77%. When Japan was hit with a tsunami, the debri and waste traveled to the Hawaiian islands. There was almost 8,00 pieces of debri found along Ni’ihau’s shores. Molokai had almost 3,00 pieces of debri and O’ahu had about 984 pieces of debri. Because the Hawaiian islands are in the center of a large body of water, it attracts more waste and garbage from the ocean.
THREE SERVICES 808 CLEANUPS PROVIDES:
808 Cleanups has a variety of programs that promote the welfare of natural environments. One of the programs they offer is a standard beach clean up. There are different times and locations in which the beach clean up is held and is about 2 hours. Beach cleanups can be done anywhere that has a beach and is the easiest and simplest way to take care and raise awareness of ocean pollution and waste.808 Cleanups also has stream cleanups. Just like a beach cleanup but for the streams inland. It is important to also clean our streams because it leads to the ocean as well. 808 Cleanups offers underwater cleanups. Underwater cleanups is meant to help gather trash and waste under the water in coral reefs. This particular cleanup is meant for scuba diving and snorkeling at Makai Research Pier in Waimanalo, but you are able to participate in any you can.
REASONING:
Our Kahiau groups project topic is grounded around the UN goal LIFE BELOW WATER. Our goal is to improve and restore the ocean's condition to its ideal state. As a group of four, we are trying to participate in as much beach cleanups as possible. We hope the ocean will once again be clean. 808 Cleanups, a non-profit organization in Hawaiʻi has a similar vision. According to their web-sight, the goal they hope to accomplish is enjoying a world with clean and safe beaches. They plan and coordinate multiple beach cleanups with the intent of taking a step closer to both our goals.

History and role of the United Nations (organization)
The United Nations was founded on October 24th, 1945 in San Francisco California. The headquarters is located in New York City. UN has many founders all around the world, consisting of the U.S., India, France, Venezuela, United Kingdom, Canda, Syria, Mexico, Brazil, Turkey, Columbia, Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Soviet Union, Poland, Egypt, Cuba, Lebanon, The Netherlands, Australia, Peru, Ethiopia, Norway, Belgium Ecuador, Chile, Greece, Argentina, Denmark, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, New Zealand Honduras, Costa Rica, Bolivia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Luxembourg, Yugoslavia, Panama, Liberia, Czechoslovakia, Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Uruguay, Paraguay, Republic of China, Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, and Union of South Africa. So, the UN is an intergovernmental organization that was tasked to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international co-operation and be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations. They have four main goals which consist of keep peace throughout the world, develop friendly relationships among other nations, to help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other’s rights and freedoms; and to be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals.
Our Goals
Our overall goal that the UN seeks to support for the betterment of humanity is to create a more sustainable environment for humans and animals to live in. Our smaller goals is to create a more sustainable environment is to participate in beach cleanup activities and to raise awareness about ocean pollution in Hawaii.
UN Goal and Our Project
The goal our group chose connects with our project topic because for our project we are trying to achieve the exact same thing. We want to create a more sustainable environment for both the humans and animals to live in. Our group wants to make sure we are making a difference in not only our community but for others around the world. To achieve that goal we will be participating in multiple events to contribute to our community. Then hopefully we will find a way to share this topic with others throughout the world.
Australia and Ocean Pollution
Countless people around the rest of the world don’t realize it, but ocean pollution is a tremendous problem in Australian marine water. Events such as oil spills and leaks, sea dumping and toxic fuel are a few main sources of Australian ocean pollution. Some of the ways the goal of a clean ocean is being addressed include anti-fouling education, permitting and penalties for ballast water, and marine environment reports. If Australia didnʻt take action and begin making a difference in their oceans condition, who knows how severe the ocean's state could be? Australia is well on its way to cleaning up dirty water sources and keeping the ocean as safe and as clean as possible for both human and animal life in years to come.
Applying it to Class
Colonization defines as the action or process of settling among and establishing control over the indigenous people of an area. Imperialization means subject to imperial rule or influence. So when you put it together you get Globalization which defines as the process by which businesses or other organizations develop international influence or start operating on an international scale. This is applied to what we’ve been learning in class by talking about all the things happening around the world and how it relates to our islands and affects the sea.
Background history and role of the Colonization/Imperialization
The in the years 1858–1947 India was colonized by the British Colonialism in India was a far more traumatizing experience for the Indian colonial subjects than their colonizers. Suffering from such things as poverty, malnutrition, disease, cultural upheaval, economic exploitation, political disadvantage, and systematic programmes aimed at creating a sense of social and racial inferiority.
Specific dates/events in history where the role of Colonization/Imperialiation
Hawaiians have always believed in taking care of the land. When the US forcefully took over Hawaii, our beliefs were gone as well. January 17, 1893, Hawaii was overthrown. When the white people had taken over, we began to trade instead of using our resources to have food. Our fishponds weren’t effective anymore. The attack of Pearl Harbor in 1941, led to ocean pollution in those waters. When the Japanese air raided the naval battle station, battleships were set in flames, tar in the water, the ocean and everything visible was black. Between 1852 and 1924 more than 200,000 Japanese immigrants came to Hawaii. The more people had come to Hawaii, the higher the pollution had become.
Explain why those events your group chose to mention sets up the role of Colonization/Imperialization
The events we chose to mention that sets up the role of colonization/imperialization because theyʻre great examples of how it affected Hawaiʻi. Hawai’i was drastically affected by the impacts of globalization. With colonization/imperialization came foreigners to Hawai’i, with foreigners came change in land and ocean conditions. Globalization, colonization, and imperialism is the event that led to ocean pollution.

What are the effects of Modern Warfare on your Kahiau issue?
The use of submarines and battleship for sea warfare affect the ocean environment drastically. Submarines and battleships both use fuel and oil to power the vessel, both fuel, and oil leak into the ocean. Fuel and oil leaks contaminate the water and life in the water itself, which affects the coral and fish. When battleships and submarines use torpedos in warfare, if the torpedo hits the debris, oil, and fuel from the wreckage all go into the ocean causing pollution.
What is the history of military influence in Hawaii?
The history of the military started in 1896 when the Hawaiian people signed a petition opposing the annexation of Hawaii into the united states. Hawaii was successful in preventing this was in 1898 during the American- Spanish war. During the 1950s through 1960s, it was a disruptive time for Hawaii. The Euro-American oligarchy influenced Hawaii a lot. Starting with individual housing, car ownership, and the right for a person, both male and female to work wherever he or she wanted. “ This ended, for better or worse, the paternalism of the plantation system. Workers could no longer expect a job for life or access to housing and basic medical care. An expanded government stepped in to provide for some of the people's needs, while responsibility shifted from the company to the individual. For the first time, Hawaii’s mostly immigrant population could determine their own future.” (Covernew, pg.1).
What are 2-3 specific events that occurred that set up military presence in Hawaii?
One event that affected Hawaii and its environment was the bombing of Kahoʻolawe. The island of Kahoʻolawe was used by the Navy from 1941-1990. Kahoʻolawe was used for rockets, bombs, and mock atomic warheads. The after effects of Kahoʻolawe still pose a threat to the environment. There are still debris and unexploded ordinances on the island. One main after-effect of the bombing of Kahoʻolawe was the large crater formed at the southwest of the island. The Navy put 500 tons of TNT into the ocean and bomb tests were conducted three times. After the tests, a large crater in the ocean that broke the water bed was formed. Another event that affected Hawaii and its environment was the attack of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. The attack of Pearl Harbor is what led to our involvement in World War II. The Japanese led an air raid on the military base of Pearl Harbor and sunk 18 or so of our ships. From those ships, oil, and fuel leaked into the ocean. To this day the USS Arizona still leaks fuel into the ocean. Though both of the events happened years ago, there are still after-effects to what happened.
How does the media portray the military?
After watching multiple videos on what the United States or military has done to Marshall islands, the media portrayed the military as very ignorant people. Through the videos that were watched, it was very clear that the military is unaware of what goes on. The military thinks that even though they asked permission to bomb the atolls and evacuate the people on the atolls, they think that they have not made an impact on the Micronesians. But they actually did, the military practiced using many atomic bombs on atolls and then not even thinking to help the people that they have affected. Also in the media, the military is kind of portrayed “dumb”. Because after seeing how many times the military tested atomic bombs, they clearly did not see that the testings were only affecting us, the United States. Those were some examples of how the media portrays the military.
How has the presence of military & military needs to affect the social infrastructure that surrounds your issue?
The military may promise safety, but at what cost? An example can be made about the people of Bikini Atoll, with the arrival of the military came their nuclear weapons. The military radiated the ocean with countless nuclear bombs. With the ocean surrounding Bikini Atoll being radiated beyond safety, families were forced to relocate to another atoll for their own safety. The bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japanese planes on December 7, 1941, resulted in numerous tragedies. Many lives were lost, yet we overlook the effect it had on the ocean and water. With the water engulfed in debris from destroyed ships and structures, the marine life that once flourished there drastically declined. With less marine life in the ocean, the balance of nature is constantly being thrown off. The debris doesn't just sink to the bottom either, the ocean currents and tides take them out to see and among other places. The military didn't provide the protection they promised. Instead, they inevitably brought our land and ocean into their war. Ocean pollution is not just from plastic we don't throw in the trash can, the military contributed and still contributes to ocean pollution with their needs to stay ahead of the game and as they would put it "win."

How do economic theories like Capitalism & Communism impact or cause global issues like poverty?
Communism is an economic system based on public ownership of property, goods, and methods of production, no one profits from others. Communism is hard on the economy because of the supply and the demand. Also, if no one owns properties, businesses, and companies in a communist state no one makes money or profit. The government gains money while people lose money.
Capitalism is an economic system based on private ownership of properties or businesses with the goal of making a profit. The profits of the company are not controlled by the workers who do the majority of the labor. The US is a capitalist country. For the employer, you make a lot of money off other people doing the work. For the employee, you make little money for your hard earned work, which leads to poverty

Which economic idea is better: communism or capitalism? Explain why.
The economic idea that's better is communism. Communism is a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. While capitalism is an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state. This is why communism is better because you will get a fair say in everything that goes down. Compared to capitalism where the it’s controlled by a private owner and they make all the decision. You may be ripped off that way because you don’t know what exactly goes down since its all private
Does Capitalism still work? Does Capitalism cause poverty? Or social injustice?
Capitalism gets blamed for many things nowadays: poverty, inequality, unemployment, even global warming. But it comes down to the idea that the majority of people before capitalism arrived one the scene was poor and as capitalism develops and more and more people became wage-laborers with rising real wages. But areas of the world still remain outside of capitalism and those people will remain poor unless and until capitualism is allowed to fully develop.
Who is / what is Karl Marx economic theory & what did he say about capitalism?
Karl Marx (1818-1883) was a philosopher, author, social theorist, an economist famous for his theories about capitalism and communism. From Marx comes the idea that capitalist profits are possible because the value is "stolen" from the workers and transferred to employers. He believed all countries should become capitalist and develop that productive capacity, and then workers would naturally revolt into communism. Marx predicted that because of capitalism's relentless pursuit of profit by way of competition and technological progress to lower the costs of production, that the rate of profit in an economy would always be falling over time. He was, without question, one of the most important and revolutionary thinkers of his time.
As a result of World Wars I & II, how did the Cold War period and a renewed focus on capitalism & corporate businesses perhaps contribute & set up your particular global issue?
If the Cold War period renewed focus on capitalism and corporate businesses, then it would greatly impact the ocean condition and health. Since the state was not in control of their countries trade and industry, it meant that the repercussions of trading were not being watched. Corporate businesses weren’t concerned with the impacts their decisions had on the ocean because they were focused on the betterment of their business. With due time, corporate businesses would soon create ocean pollution through their careless actions that were set into place by selfishness and greed. With corporate businesses, mindsets focused on the betterment of their business, they couldn’t see the possible impacts their decisions had on the ocean.
Positive/desirable Example of A Time In History European Power Decolonizing A Colony
The decolonization of Africa lead to multiple negative impacts. In most cases they became poorer, infrastructure went down the drain, and wars between the different political groups to govern ravaged on. Basically corruption in its worst form. Africa also suffered from the instability of the post-colonial political systems, which entails other, far-reaching consequences.
Currently, the world's highest urban population growth recorded in Africa. If this rate was maintained until 2050. In African cities would live about 1.2 billion people or 25 percent. the world's urban population. Such large cities generate a variety of problems, one of the keys is the problem of access to clean water. If Hawaiʻi were to be decolonized then we would be forced to defend ourselves and protect our nation. We would no longer have the protection that the U.S provides for the state of Hawaiʻi.

Compare and Contrast
This The fall of Rome was due to various reasons, the most notable being the lack of money. Without a sufficient amount of money, the Empire known as Rome fell. Much like Rome, the U.S. is suffering from huge debt and lack of money. As of December 2018, the U.S. owes China a debt of $1.12 trillion, the U.S. is bound to fall only with the debt we owe China. As of June 19, 2018, the U.S. Senate voted to give the military $716 billion for 2019, approving one of the biggest defense budgets in modern American history despite concerns from some economists and lawmakers about the rapidly rising federal deficit. It seems as if we are overspending on our military forces, just as Rome. Another one of the main reasons why Rome fell was due to their overexpansion and military overspending. Rome also fell because of its government corruption and political instability. Many Americans today would argue that the government is corrupted and political spendings are far exceeding the ideal amount. Environmental And Public Health Problems lead to the fall of Rome. Many Rich Romans died of led from the led pipes they used for drinking water. Lead consumption can affect the heart, kidneys, and nerves. Since 2015 the state of Michigan has been suffering from polluted/unclean water. The state found dangerously high levels of led in the water, residents reported various cases where the water tasted different and smelt funny. According to Demandt, the Roman Empire’s fall was impacted by their racial discrimination. You could say that President Trump's actions to deport and separate families are very similar to the Roman Empires racist actions.
The iron curtain formed from the imaginary boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of World War II in 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991. It symbolized efforts by the Soviet Union to block itself and its satellite states from open contact with the West and non-Soviet-controlled areas. “The Cold War was a period of intense rivalry and competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union that lasted between 1945-1991. Winston Churchill had been the Prime Minister of Great Britain during World War II. It was Churchill who coined the term Iron Curtain in a 1946 speech he delivered in Missouri.” (study). This is just like what Trump is doing with the wall. To protect us from the illegal immigrants and keep us safe. With this Trump will make many enemies and especially with Mexico, this would bring a downfall to America.
