The issue of poverty that my group is choosing to study is the issue of rising living costs. This issue connects to the UN Development Goal sustainable cities and communities. We looked at the word sustainable in that goal in a bit of a different way. For this problem sustainable means being able to sustain a cost of living that is attainable to all classes of people. It means households being able to sustain a working wage that allows them to keep their homes. One job should be enough for someone to sustain their home.
I connect with this issue because it is happening here in Hawaiʻi. Rising costs of living has been an ongoing problem in our islands. This problem might not be that easy to spot at first. It’s the gradual nature of this problem that makes it so difficult to conquer. The other difficult thing about this problem is that the cause of the problem is a greed for money. People and corporations are trying to get as much money as possible while giving as little back as possible which is why the cost of living continues to rise without the minimum wage increasing with it. Some ways this issue is trying to be fixed is by setting up more low income housing and nonprofits building houses for free but to really fix this issue we need to go to the source. The main areas that need to be changed to solve this problem is, the high price of houses, the high price of food, the high price of home essentials, the high price of health care, insurance and other basic needs of living, and the low value of minimum wage.
