Throughout the process of getting to this point we went through many obstacles, such as a lot of rescheduling and deciding which event to choose for our project. At first we chose to clean the Kahuku Shoreline for 4 hours and clean up as much pollution as possible. But, we wanted to make a bigger impact, and with an organization. So, we chose to go with 808 clean ups event of cleaning up the Palolo Canal. The main reason we chose this was because we knew the trash from the canal leads into the ocean, so by starting at the canal we are preventing any trash from there leading into the ocean. During the clean up we started at the very beginning of the canal and worked our way down picking up the trash and putting it in a bucket, then once the bucket was filled we transferred it to the garbage bags, we filled 4 bags up. Then, once we finished cleaning, Liv the 808 clean ups supervisor, brought an at home water test, and we tested how clean the water was, which turned out to be super basic.
Overall, I’ve gained more knowledge on the issue and a new perspective on being a global citizen. This was a small action of a small group of people cleaning up trash in a canal, but when looking at the bigger picture, we actually made a big difference. I believe the more we realize our actions affect more than we think, the more motivation and work will be achieved. Especially after talking with Liv, she inspired me to go out into my community and do more for it. After doing this clean up, it makes me support not the bill even more because after witnessing all the plastic in the canal I want to get rid of plastic even more. I want to continue work like this because this only can make a positive impact, and it teaches me to be a better person. The more action we take, the change will be made, and we need this especially with today’s circumstances.

It's currently 5/3 and we just changed our plan to something else. Brooke found Palolo Stream clean up this weekend and recommended we should do that with the organization. Maybe for extra help to our project brooke and I were going to go to kahala too and clean up the beach, but for our main plan will be to clean the waimanalo stream. We still need to look for into it for more information and times, but I believe it is on Saturday. After this we will start putting our iMovie together and finish our google drive.
We still haven't done the actual Kahiau project, but we have a plan. On Saturday May 6 from 10 am to 3 pm we will clean the makaha beach. Tita, Kanani, Brooke, and I will do the plan I stated before in the last blog. I really hope it happens this weekend because I noticed it has just been rescheduled a lot and we haven't gotten anything done really. Kumu recommended we actually volunteer with our organization instead of just cleaning up the beach because she thinks it will make a bigger impact. I think we might consider doing that, but we just need to find an event that will work for all of us and that we can all participate at.
We planned to do our project during Spring Break but then I went on a last minuet trip and we couldn't do it, but were planning on doing it sometime soon with Kanani and Brooke from PD 2. We were talking about it and we are all doing the same topic as to cleaning the beach, so we thought we should team up and do it together. We might do it on the west side because tita and kanani live in that area, so brooke and and I would drive out there and meet them. I think since were teamed up the job will get done faster and we'll have even more fun, and hopefully we can persuade more people to come with us too. I hope we enjoy doing this and weather is good so we won't be struggling to get this done.
Then plan so far is when we get to the beach we are just going wear gloves and pick up as much rubbish as possible for a couple of hours. We will probably scan the beach first and take a couple of videos then start walking around. After we will get trash bags ready and take turns taking videos and pictures for maybe 20 minuets, then put the phone down and start cleaning up together. We are gonna continue doing this for a couple of hours and then maybe after about 3-4 we'll stop. We want to take before and after pictures, and show how much trash we collected.Instead of cleaning the shoreline during Spring Break, we have to do it earlier because I am not going to be here during Spring Break. I was thinking maybe sometime in February we should do it. Maybe around February 11th we wanted to do it because we should both be free by them, but if not then the next weekend. We want to try and get this done ASAP so we have time to work on the project film making. I hope we can finish it soon but still put in good quality work.Currently it's January 2017 and Tita and I have came up with the plan to meet during Spring Break at the Kahaku Shoreline with trash bags around 10 am. Our goal is to fill up at least 3-5 bags of rubbish with the help our parents too. We want to make a big difference in the way the beach looks and clean up as much trash and pollution as possible. The more trash we collect the more impact we believe we will make, so thats our goal. We hopefully will get friends and family to come too so we can get more help and work done.
In December Tita and I came up with the idea to clean up the Kahuku Shoreline for our Kahiau Project. We thought that for our organization we will be using Sustainable Coastlines Hawai'i. Then during spring break of 2017 we will go to the beach and clean as much as we can. We want to make a difference in our world and we think by cleaning up the beach we can get somewhere. Pollution is a very big problem especially here in Hawai'i because all of our trash usually goes straight to the ocean harming not just the environment, but all the sea animals. |
