The events of the Silk Road, Exploration, Expansion & Enlightenment period directly impact my UN goal of life below water and my Kahiau project on ocean pollution. The transfer of ideas and foreign technology around the world lead to the development of more industries and factories around the world. This relates to ocean pollution because the chemical discharges, illegal dumping, raw sewage runoffs, and acidulation from these infrastructure pollute bodies of water and harm marine life. For example, with the transfer of resources such as metal and iron, more factories were built to obtain these fine resources. Hence, with these factories came chemicals and pollutants that ended up in the worldʻs oceans. In this way, although the events in this period played an important role for empires to obtain foreign resources, they polluted and harmed many bodies of water and marine ecosystems. Another example of how these events negatively impacted life below water is from the oil-run ships that traveled across the sea to get to foreign land. The negative effects of these ships were that they essentially released tons of toxic oils into the oceans, ultimately harming marine life. Overall, with the accumulation of pollutants from the factories and chemical emitting inventions during this period, much of the worldʻs oceans have been significantly impaired. References
