Throughout the 30 days of this World History class, I think that I have improved a lot and have learned many critical thinking skills. For the improvement of quality work about history I’ve produced in these 30 days, I would give myself a 4.5 or even a 5. This is because I have been producing really good quality work, been turning things in on time, and I tried to make maiau/neat quality work for each assignment. For the improvement of the quality of the digital application I produced, I would give myself a 4.5. This is because before I didnʻt really understand how to use things like Photoshop and Illustrator, but I have improved and learned how to use them. For the improvement of independence & self-organization/direction Iʻve exhibited, I would give myself a 5. This is since during this World history weʻve had to do lots of independent work. This independent work has improved my independence, self-organization, and direction. I think that the work that weʻve done and the things I have learned during this course have been valuable and added to my knowledge base. This is because I didnʻt know about the details of many historical events before like WWI, WWII, The Cold War, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, etc. Something that I learned about that I thought was valuable was about the Treaty of Versailles, which was the peace treaty of WWI, but it was also like an armistice towards WWII. I think that making better connections between historical events and current events will be helpful to me in the future. This is because this will increase my critical thinking skills of being able to analyze and compare and contrast different events. I also think that this Kahiau Project has been valuable in learning project management, applying digital and critical thinking, and making connections between historical events & current issues we face. This is because while doing this project I have been able to practice and learn about time management. Also, this new opportunity for creating a website has taught me new things about digital and critical thinking. Additionally, while creating my vlogs, I was about to look back on historical events and connect them to current issues we face today and talk about them in my vlogs. Overall, I think that this Kahiau project was a valuable experience. Something that I've learned about myself as a young kānaka with potential for leadership in Modern Hawaiʻi is that I'm capable of doing more things then I thought I could. This is because during this course weʻve had many assignments every day, but I still pushed myself to finish all my assignments on time, while making them good quality. I would see myself as a very hard working leader in the future. This is because this summer, Iʻve pushed myself to do my best, and Iʻve been hard-working, and I think this will affect me in the future as a leader. Lastly, some skills I feel would be useful to have in many situations are the skills of critical thinking, but to also speak eloquently to get your point across. APA Citations: Hitt, C. (2019). Summary:
In India, the impacts of climate change induced extreme weather events on the lives of people, particularly belonging to the poor and vulnerable sections of the society in India, and climate change is increasing alarmingly with each passing year. The Sunder ban delta part of India is very remote and is accessible mostly by boats. This remote region has become a hub for human traffickers who continue to prey upon the gullible villagers, who are mostly dependent on fishing, agriculture, collection and gathering of resources for a living. The combined effects of climate change, erosion, flood, sea water inundation and extreme poverty, make it easier for traffickers to lure women and children into forced prostitution, marriage and child labor. In 2019, the Supreme Court of India had directed the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to analyze data on missing persons (especially on women and children) so areas prone to human trafficking could be identified and action could be taken. The NCRB study was based on the annual Crime in India Report compiled by the agency for the years 2016, 2017 and 2018. In these three years hundreds of thousands of women went missing. According to the report, the three states where the highest number of women went missing in the three years are Maharashtra, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. Regular flooding isnʻt only eroding people's land and livelihoods, but the social fabric of these communities too. These dire circumstances force most families to send their young children away, to work in factories or in cities. The human traffickers take advantage of this situation, pose as job recruiters, or use local unemployed poor men to lure girls away with the false promise of marriage. When abducted, the girls are sold into prostitution, some end up as domestic help and are abused; sometimes they land as far away as the Middle East. Geography Theme: This article relates to the geography theme of place. This is because due to the specific place they are in, which is India, there is extreme climate change and it is affecting the lives of these people. This also relates to place because due to the unique climate & climate change in India, human traffickerʻs have been taking advantage of more people who are dependent on their environment, but also on jobs. Reaction: My reaction to this article was that the amount of people that have been trafficked is horrible. I also thought that that the extreme climate change must be really effecting the lives of these people, and I never thought that due to climate change, human trafficking would become more active. But, I also wonder if there wasnʻt extreme climate change, then would there be less people being trafficked today. Connections/Analysis: Overall, I think that this article connects to the World History theme of Human Environment Interaction, but also Social Interaction. This is because people in India depend on their environment to make a living. Because of the extreme climate change it’s harder for them to make a living, but also more people are being trafficked by human traffickers. This also deals with social interaction, and this is between the social interaction of traffickers and the people being trafficked. Also, because of human traffickers who take advantage of people trying to find jobs, this leads to less trust in the people of India. This event is important to us today because it shows us that during this extreme climate change is still a big problem in the world today, but so is human trafficking Bibliography Citation: (kolkata, O., & Soumik Dutta is a freelance investigative journalist based in Kolkata and Bangalore. We can also balance this with our Native Hawaiian values and identities while protecting the future of our lāhui. We can do this by embracing our Hawaiian traditions today, but we can also do this just by taking care of the ʻāina. This is because one of our most important values is aloha ʻāina and just by having a sense of responsibility and understanding for our land, then I think we as Native people are protecting the future of our lāhui. If we continue our traditions and our sense of aloha ʻāina, I think the future for Native Hawaiians is bright. Education at Kamehameha Schools is a privilege and a great opportunity to learn and be taught life skills. Each person who gets the opportunity to learn at Kamehameha should take their chance because it is a great opportunity to learn and be educated. For each person here at Kamehameha, ten or more people would want to be in their position because of the great opportunities and resources Kamehameha provides. In the future, people from our school could be great and impactful leaders like Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Today people of color are still being discriminated against, and if just one person of color or native stands up, they could change what we know today. Overall, having an indefinite impact on people of color will start to lead our people to be steadfast. APA Citations: Whipps, H. (2008, September 08). How Gandhi Changed the World. America is quite advanced and has evolved a lot more in some ways than our predecessors. Because America has various resources and doesnʻt need to rely on outside sources, they are more advanced. America also doesnʻt need to expand now because of itʻs abundance of resources and can export resources to other countries throughout the world. But, before America and other predecessor countries had to colonize another place to expand and to gather new resources. Today in America, native people are treated the same as they were back then, unequally. People still treat natives and people of color differently based on the color of their skin. For example, currently, the Black Lives Matter movement is happening due to the extensive amount of discrimination and inequality towards or for people of color. There is still nothing being done by the government to fix this problem of discrimination and inequality. The empire of America currently occupies the nation of Hawaiʻi to make the issues in your Kahiau project worse by the number of technological advancements America has brought to Hawaiʻi. This is because America has brought many new technological advancements to Hawaiʻi that we didnʻt have before. They made things like buildings, factories, and different industries. These advancements all contributed to pollution, especially from the factories. The factories' pollutants go into the sky causing the rain to be more acidic. Factories also produce sewage, which pollutes the water. The Hawaiian people would have been fine without these advancements because we were self-sustainable and had one, if not the best environmental systems in the world. For example, we have loʻi and even loko iʻa, which were very advanced back then and are still quite advanced today. Our ancestors could be self-sustainable, and so can we in todayʻs society. And just this thursday in Victoria, Australia there were 77 new cases reported, these cases were reported from communities with working-class immigrants and essential workers who are particularly vulnerable to the disease. The coronavirus had first spread in Australia from the sharing of a cigarette lighter among security guards working at a hotel where returning international travelers are being quarantined. It later circulated in low-income neighborhoods with big migrant populations, including inside a supermarket distribution center. These outbreaks have also halted the reopening of state borders, undercut plans to create travel bubbles with other countries, and forced 300,000 people back into lockdown. Additionally, officials of the state of Victoria go knocking on the doors of residents warning them of the coronavirus & if they donʻt comply with state guidelines they could affect others in the community. In the past two weeks, Victoria has had daily double-digit increases in cases and the government messaging hasnʻt always been effective due to language barriers and the guidelines translations took too long to reach these people and werenʻt always clear. Also the government messaging hasnʻt always been effective due to distrust of the authorities, fear of virus testing, and people with low incomes may be less able to stay home from work when ill. Some of these communities also experience hush rates of homelessness & overcrowding, which makes it hard for residents to comply with social distancing guidelines. Experts have also said that lockdowns enforced by the police may only harm communities already wary of the authorities and exacerbate their sense of isolation. People of immigrant communities or people of color have also lately been racially targeted for the spread of the coronavirus, these people were of Asian descent & Islamic descent. The people of Asian descent were targeted just for the fact that they were Asian & the Islamic were targeted because there was rumor that a spread happened during a traditional celebration. But they are not to blame, for the people who first brought coronavirus to Australia had been from global citizens, coming back from their cruises and their ski trips to Aspen. Also, there probably wouldnʻt have been such a thing as WWII. This is because when the Treaty of Versailles was created it had put pull blame on the Germans. However, this made the Germans enraged because they had to pay for the damages of war. The Germans were already in an economic crisis, so this made their situation worse. These circumstances also got worse when a man named Adolf Hitler told the Germans he could fix their problems, and he used their anger to start WWII. If all the other nations that were involved in the war helped to pay for damages and Germany had paid a bit more, their economic crisis wouldnʻt be as bad as it was. Additionally, if Hitler never became popular among the German people, WWII probably wouldnʻt have started. However, they were in a crisis at that time, and the German people took to Hitlerʻs words and in some way gave people hope, thatʻs why they liked him. The results of WWI and The Treaty of Versailles worsen the issues in our Kahiau projects in modern society. This is because in WWII the advancement of technology and innovation has made our issue of clean water and sanitation worse. If technology and innovation from WWII werenʻt so heavily pushed out and used, then the pollution we have in the world today would be to a lower extent. Though these innovations have made advancements in today's society, they have also caused a large amount of pollution. And a technological advancement that is under construction today is the TMT on Mauna Kea. Today technological advancements are being made, but not all are good. These advancements can either affect the water positively or negatively. APA Citations: Jerry Renshaw Jerry Renshaw is a veteran journalist, G. (n.d.). When the Black Lives Matter Movement had started it had shocked the government and was a wake-up call for them. The Black Lives Matter movement was also like a way to show the government that there is still an ongoing issue of racism in the U.S. and the world. Because there has been oppression and racism towards people of color for so long, this was bound to happen eventually, which supports the Malthusian Flux theory. I think that the Malthusian Flux theory doesnʻt play a big part in just my group's issue but in everyone's Kahiau project issue. This is because the government has been turning a blind eye with many of these issues. Over time the disregard of these issuesʻ makes the situation worse. Right now the government is focused on COVID-19 and other world problems, that they take no notice of smaller but important issuesʻ. The Malthusian Flux theory connects to my group's issue, which is clean water & sanitation. This is due to there being a rising population in China at over 1.3 billion. Because of the high population resources are needed to feed these people and then farms come into play. To maintain these huge farms, farmers in china use pesticides. These pesticides can be harmful to humans and can travel into nearby water for agriculture and more. The water then becomes polluted and this decreases the sanitation of the water. Additionally, the government needs to look at other issues as well, because they arenʻt paying notice to them. An issue that should be looked over is the Mauna Kea protest and movement. The government approved the construction of the TMT on Mauna Kea, but they didnʻt think of or didnʻt know of the sacred connection the natives had with the Mauna. The intention was to build to increase their knowledge of astronomy, but they had not thought about the sacred land they were building on. This is because Gandhi realized that it was unfair that the Indian people had to carry around passes and that they were not treated equally to other races. Gandhi wanted equality and today people are still striving for equality as well. When the Indian Independence movement had started Gandhi burned the passes of his fellow Indians. He did this to prove a point that the Indian people wanted equality, but while doing this he was assaulted by a British policeman. Earlier this year an African American man named George Floyd was wrongfully murdered by a racist policeman, based on the color of his skin. This relates to the Black Lives Matter movement because people back then were being judged based on the color of their skin, just as they still are today. This also applies to the Black Lives Matter movement because the people who are being most violent during these protests are the police. Most or if not all protestersʻ are peaceful. These people protesting are standing up for what they believe in and are peacefully doing it. Overall, both Gandhi and believers and protestors of the Black Lives Matter movement want equality. I think that Gandhiʻs approach is one model of decolonization in modern society across the globe, but also here in Hawaiʻi. Gandhiʻs approach to situations was very respectful and peaceful. During the Indian Independence movement, Gandhi was only ever peaceful and he said if you ever fight back you are no better than the people attacking you. I can see this peaceful take in todayʻs society with things like the Mauna Kea protests. These protestors didnʻt want a thirty-meter telescope to be constructed on their sacred Mountain, so they set up camp there and protested. The protestors are always peaceful. If the protestors were to get arrested, no one would resist. Right now these protests are postponed due to virus concerns, but they will all come back again to peacefully protest. APA Citations:

The topic of Guns, Germs, & Steel doesnʻt really relate or have an effect on my group's issue/goal. My groupʻs UN Development goal is Clean Water and Sanitation. Although this topic overall didnʻt have an impact on our issue, the germs factor may have affected clean water & sanitation. For example, during the high period of Guns, Germs, & Steel, settlers or foreigners brought diseases to Papua New Guinea. These diseases got natives sick, and eventually killed many natives. Additionally, in Papua New Guinea there were diseases like Malaria that mosquitoes carried by the water. This could have also caused the water to have carried diseases in it. But also, when the Papua New Guineans died from the diseases, their bodies could have been thrown into the water causing water pollution. This water could have been used in agriculture for farming, which would have caused more harm to people in the end. This issue connects to current events like the coronavirus. This is because today we are also being affected by diseases like the coronavirus. Just like diseases had spread all over the world back then, today the coronavirus has spread all over the world as well. Today to minimize the spread of disease people are taking proper measures like wearing masks and social distancing. These would have probably been a good solution to minimize the spread of disease back then, and it probably would have minimized water pollution as well. Today people all over the world and in Hawaiʻi are trying to find a vaccine for the coronavirus. Vaccines would have been effective back then & would have caused less spread of disease and there would have been a lower death toll. APA Citations: Guns Germs & Steel: Educators . Throughout the Agricultural, Scientific, and Enlightenment revolutions, I donʻt think they had a really big impact on our issue. Our group UN Development Goal/Issue is clean water & sanitation and I think that agriculture had the biggest effect out of these revolutions on our issue. This is because with the use of farms, water was used to grow crops and raise livestock. In China, the Agricultural Revolution made an impact on the production of crops like rice. This made China successful so they used water as an advantage. Even though it didn't have a huge impact on the quality of water, agriculture was the cause of one factor of water pollution. Today we have pesticides, thes pesticides were made to control insect infestation and weed growth. Although it benefits the crops, they are harmful to water & humans. There is potential for water contamination and acute or chronic effects in humans. The use of pesticides arenʻt only impacting China, but also different places in the world as well. When people are farming, they use pesticides, but these pesticides can harm people, like themselves & also affect water sanitation. A study was done in China that shows evidence that pesticides adversely affect health outcomes via drinking water exposure. Also there was a 10% increase in rice pesticide used unfavorably which altered the key medical disability index by 1% for rural residents 65 and older, which is equivalent to 2.13 and 0.64 million dollars in medical and family care costs. This shows that pesticides have had an impact on people , but also clean water and sanitation. Overall, there are a few things being done & organizations helping to minimize use of pesticides and people are now starting to use non-toxic chemicals while farming.
