There were many things that affected the Cold War, however here are three that made the most impact. The first would be the technological race between countries. These were called the nuclear arms race and the space race. America remained at gold beating out Germany which must’ve caused tension. Another hotspot would be the Vietnam war where the US government demolished the Peace Accords to help South Vietnam. This was done because President Nixon resigned leaving the democrats to take over and exempt America from Vietnamese connections. The last hotspot would be the Berlin Wall or Iron Curtain. This wall was constructed in order to segregate countries in order of their economic systems.
Looking back on what we’ve learned this past year, wars have never really ended. I doubt they will ever come to a halt as long as power, greed, and opinions exist. Taking a look at Hawai’i’s economic standing, we are more of a communist/socialist community. This is because nobody really owns anything. In the case of old Hawai’i the land is the government and from there is the monarchy who direct the people. Nonetheless, people have/had rights to their voices as long as they kept in line with the kapu. This is a threat to the US because Hawai’i will become independent, and the US wants to maintain control being we are a perfect resource in the middle of the pacific. As for the systems that have been set up for Natives by foreigners such as homestead, I do not agree that these systems help. This is because of the fact that these “benefits” actually make the native people more dependent on the foreign government.

From the presentation on the ending of World War II, there were many things to take away. However, it’s these three tech advancements that are of the utmost importance; because they ended the war. The B17 flying fortress, Little boy, and Fat man bombs are those three advancements. The US used these weapons to push Japan to surrender and end the war. A warning was first issued, then the first bomb was dropped. Japan had no intention of backing down, therefore the US dropped another atomic bomb and the war became a done deal.
When it comes to power and greed everything ethical becomes foggy, and fear begins to blind values. In the context of WWII, some leaders wanted safety but most were hungry for power. They succumbed to fear rather than standing up for the values that were the “bases” of their nations. Today our nation’s leaders; in specific US and Hawaiʻi; could and should be harsher on the stay at home act regarding COVID-19. Whenever there is an opportunity to move those who are in their way whether it be on the Mauna or in Nalo they have no problem taking them to Jail. However, in the midst of a pandemic where people are putting strangers in lethal danger, these same leaders look the other way. In connection with our Kahiau project, the aftermath of the war continues to pollute our oceans and atmospheres. The weapons and technology developed are still being mass-produced using the same underdeveloped forms of fuel that deplete our O-zone layer. |
