Over the course of our winter break, we needed to plan our a community project that revolved around homelessness in Hawai'i, and what we can do to help or even reduce that problem. As we were planning, we had three nonprofits flake out on us or didn’t respond and we had several plans that never came into fruition because of some change in plans with the group. It was especially difficult because nobody was home during break. Alika ended up going home to Washington, Hali’a went to Kaua’i to visit with family, both of which were last minute, Donna had to take care of her mom who had just had surgery, and Shaydee had her own personal issues. What went well with our planning is that once everyone came back to school, we were able to find a place to go do work and actually have all of our members included in the service project. Nothing could’ve been better because we were all gone. Whenever two people were free, the other two would be busy. This made it hard to do a group project if half of us were gone. We didn’t really compensate for it, I had made plans with the IHS to do kitchen work as a last resort but Donna was able to find a better alternative that everyone would be able to attend to. But now that everyone is back, we have decided to go on a Farm in Makaha who grows, harvests and delivers goods to homeless shelters on January 25th, 2020. An update will be provided. *UPDATE* After various planning, I was the only one in my group to do the service project, but I was able to work from 8am-12pm on sorting non perishable goods at the Hawai'i Food Bank. They donate to various places all over the state and even send to homeless shelters. That day my mo and I and a handful of others, ended up sorting about 10,000 pounds worth of food! Here is a video of an interview I had with one of their representatives, Lilian Rodolfich. The research we did for this project was very enlightening, as it showed how there is an attempt to remedy the humanitarian issues that are facing our state, and some of the challenges there are to remedying this issue. We are learning more and more that around the world, people are facing the same problems as the U.S. and maybe even worse. Throughout the planning for our Winter Community Service Assignment, and with an application of the leadership skills we’ve learned the past semester, we have deepened our connection to the issue our project is addressing. We haven’t been able to work with our nonprofits to help remedy and get up close with the issue we are addressing, but through our research, we are learning more about what to expect when we do work with our nonprofit. Thank you to the Hawai'i Food Bank for having my mom and I come to work for 4 hours straight! It was a great experience. and thank you to Lilian Rodolfich for allowing us to do an interview with her!
