The events from Gandhi and the Rabbit Proof Fence reflect the British mindset when dealing with ‘Āina by constantly colonizing the land thinking it will fully benefit both sides. But from these stories, it is seen that the British have the obvious advantage and power over the minority.
There are similarities between the British and modern American/Hawaii examples that we’ve seen throughout our past and our present. From both mindsets, they colonized empires and kingdoms who were already self sustaining and destroyed their culture and even their ways of life. They both bring new technology, but in the process bring disease, conflict and greed. Their influence has always caused a negative impact in our lives, but as the present becomes the past, many forget what has happened to our kupuna. As the rise of empires created competition for more land, technological advancements were also put into place, creating a new global state of affairs around the world including Hawai’i. These technological advancements from World War 2 worsened the situation in Hawai’i today by creating more weapons of war that would harm our environment. New bombs, planes, ships and guns have influenced Hawaii by making Pearl Harbor a target, for being the only port that ruled the pacific. If I could speak to the world leaders during the Treaty of Versailles on behalf of the bombing of “Bravo” in Moaninuiākea, I would tell them to evacuate the people, no matter if it's a test subject. Because even though the bomb itself did not kill them instantly, it brough different cancers to their people, causing mothers who were pregnant to lose their children, and families being broken. Though the bombing was an ‘accident’ it still was written in many records of its existence and it's effects. Not giving a public announcement of the bomb itself and how much damage it would do is a crime in it itself.
