What are some examples of how COLONIZATION OR GLOBALIZATION is creating challenges in your own island, community, state, nation that relates to this UN Goal / Issue?
An example of colonization is on my home island on the coast of Kauaihae. Kauaihae is my fishing grounds and the military is coming to make the coast their training lands. This relate to an UN goal because it is against it. Us fishermen canʻt be sustainable if our land is yet again taken away for their own benefit and not ours. Why is this something to consider: Do you see a personal connection to this (and please try to find at least one) - what is it and why? I see a personal connection because I personally have been fishing on this coast for most of my life. Fishing helps me perpetuate my Hawaiian roots and provides food for my family. This spot is the best spot on my island and I know this because I have fished everywhere so if it is taken away then it will be harder to go fishing somewhere. What, if anything, are you learning about Colonization or Globalization and how has your understanding of the impacts of Colonization and/or Globalization perhaps influenced the way you see your group topic as a challenge or problem to be addressed? I learned that colonization and globalization play huge roles in how poverty works. Economic growth is the main channel through which globalization can affect poverty. What researchers have found is that, in general, when countries open up to trade, they tend to grow faster and living standards tend to increase. The usual argument goes that the benefits of this higher growth trickle down to the poor.
