I think that decolonizing in Hawai’i is very harmful to us native Hawaiians. We already don’t have a very good sense of identity as it is. In the olden days the Hawaiians knew how to control their fresh water and keep it fresh. But as we kept getting decolonized people took away those abilities from the Hawaiians as they also took away their ways of life. It was definitely a very prized ability to possess as water is the main source of life. As native Hawaiians we would have been fine on our own with our fresh, clean, non-polluted, non-contaminated, pure water. But as we got decolonized and lost our ways of life. We also lost important abilities to sustain life such as controlling our fresh waters.

One example of how Globalization is creating challenges in our community is that people in the hospitality businesses are marketing Hawai’i to make money. Which is good for our economy but not good for our environment. The more tourists they bring in the more hotels, shopping centers, boat tours, and many more things pollute our air and oceans. This is an issue to consider because one day our oceans may become so polluted and filthy that it would be impossible and even dangerous to do things in. Which will decrease the amount of tourists that come through Hawai’i because if you really think about it tourists come to Hawai’i to experience the oceans. But if they can’t get in or if their view becomes not what is being advertised than people will stop coming. |
