The UN Goals my group decided to participate in is Poverty and Good health and Well being. Our specific topic is targeting houseless/homeless minors in Hawaiʻi. According to the US Department of education, 3,101 students experienced homelessness in the course of the school year 2017-2018. Our goal and kuleana as Kamehameha students is to bring awareness, advocate change, and help those in need to find resources/ places they can go to seek help. Due to the expansion and exploration during the Enlightenment period, our UN goals and topics have been impacted. During this time period, the native people of the "conquered" land were used as the workforce. We were put to labor work so that the "conquers" could live the lives they dreamed of. This created an economic and social tier system. We, the native people, were put at the bottom of it. Being at the bottom of the food chain, they didnʻt make enough money to have a fulfilling life like the "conquers". I believe that this is when poverty started to explore through every corner of the world. As the expansion and exploration of new land, food, and people started to become more popular so did the effects it had on the economy and the native people. This now trickles down to today where it is affecting the future generations of Hawaiʻi. Kaiao Meyer.
