Summary
The summary of this article is that in India, the total amount of water is declining very fast, but there are 4 ways to try and help fix the problem. The 4 ways are policy, reforms, and governance, developing innovative financing structures, investor action, and community-based models. Policy, reforms, and governance refers to using the governments and policies to create ways to be more conservative with water and fixing problems through leaders of the government. Developing innovative financing structures is important because using the money they have correctly and effectively is important to use the money to get the most out of it. Investor action is having investors invest more money to help solve the problems. Community-based models are ways to specifically have people be able to get water in different ways while it is still cheap enough for them to afford (Vikas, Aiyer, Vikas, May 26 2021). All of these solutions can work and they can be effective but only if people take action to help solve the problem. Geography These articles relate to the geography theme, place. The relationship between these is the environment and habitat of India is one that makes it harder to find easy access to water. There are plenty of places in India that are drier so itʻs harder to find water than somewhere like Europe or North America that have more streams, rivers, and lakes. Also, thereʻs more people so the amount of water everyone can share will not go as far as if there was a smaller population. If there were less people then there would be more water for everyone to have to drink. Geography is important to this topic because it can dictate how the issue of not having enough water can be resolved. Geography is also important because having more natural places to get water can be beneficial so less people may have to travel to get water. Having places that allow for easy access to water will be able to help grow the economy more. Though this is of negative importance to this topic, India is a drier country with not a huge amount of areas to be able to pull water from, so this may help to expedite the process to make sure that the population wonʻt become dehydrated. But Indiaʻs government will have come up with a good solution because they can ruin the environment by trying to drill for water (Vikas, May 26 2021). But the good thing is that importing water from other countries can be an option especially because India is close to many countries who make a lot of exports, but it will hurt the economy because of the expenses. Overall, geography can be important to these issues coming up, while other countries wonʻt have this lack of water problem, they are going to have other problems that India doesnʻt have. Reaction These articles about India being in a state of needing to fix their water situation affects me, my state, the US, and the world. This affected me by making me feel worried about the future with this issue in India and how it will affect other countries in the future. It made me feel sympathetic towards those who donʻt have it as easy as I do and it made me not take things like access to water for granted. This issue can affect my community and the US because if there is a big water crisis in India and less people are able to make products to be exported then we will lose a valuable source of products like clothes and some foods. It can also affect these places because our country will want to make sure not to go down the same path of lacking water as them and will be able to make good decisions for long term purposes. They will get to learn from observing others to know what and what not to do. The entire world can learn from this by seeing the solutions that India is implementing and use that as an example for what they can do to solve their own water problems or know how to prevent it (Vikas, Aiyer, Vikas, May 26 2021). They can learn from others to know what the future can be for their countries if they donʻt act, so it will help get some countries to make changes to solidify a positive future. This article can affect anyone and everyone from all over the globe, no matter your situation or what you and your country want to do to act on this water crisis. Connection/Analysis This article connects to the World History theme, it challenges us to think outside the box, and to be creative because this article is about India coming up with different solutions for their clean water crisis. This article can be important to us because learning about these solutions India is trying to implement can give us our own ideas of what and what not to do and it can influence others' solutions to their own water problems (Vikas, Aiyer, Vikas, May 26 2021). The government had to be creative and come up with a bunch of different solutions because some of them might not be effective enough. Also, coming up with a bunch of unique solutions can help people find the best solution that can help the most people possible. If the government wasnʻt able to come up with creative solutions, then the problem could never be solved. Though the U.S. doesnʻt have many problems with having enough water, eventually this may become a problem so it would be important for us to observe what other countries did to solve their own problems. We will be able to learn from their mistakes or successes to come up with the most effective solution that fits our country. These solutions can be very helpful for us here in Hawaiʻi because we live on an island, so it may become a problem in the future to get clean water easily. Most of our water comes from the aquifer, which is basically a lot of freshwater located underneath our island. But the aquifer doesnʻt have an unlimited supply of water, and when we eventually use up that resource we will need to find other efficient ways to get freshwater. But learning about what India is doing can help influence our own solutions and what we can do to secure the future of our islands. Overall, this article is able to relate to and influence other countries around the world as well as the themes of world history. Citations: Namita Vikas, Sourajit Aiyer, & Cymroan Vikas.
