" Leadership Model of Gandhi"The leaders example of Gandhi and how he handled the onslaught of colonization and imperialism to win back India makes me think of the Black Lives Matter movement because of how both movements are taking the non-violence approach. In the movie we see Gandhi leading a protest and telling the people around him not to resist arrest and keep protests peaceful. The same things are happening now in the Black Lives Matter protests. Protesters are being peaceful and police officers are trying to make them out to seem disruptive of the peace. They even try to make it look like coronavirus numbers are going up because of protests. But in reality protests are clean, safe and very cautious with their procedures. The people that arenʻt being safe are officers who arenʻt wearing masks and arenʻt practicing safe protocol. Another similarity that I found was that in both the movie and now people would go out of line and riot and lute but then people stopped and continued to protest peacefully. It has also come to my attention that the police in both instances are being violent and hurting the people protesting even though it is their constitutional right to protest.
An example of these connections and how Gandhi's approach is a model in today's society is when there are protests regarding Hawaiiʻs independence and protests against the telescope being built on Mauna Kea. In both of these instances the protests were peaceful and planned. I actually attended one of these and there was a huge turn out, hundreds of people filled the streets and the sky was filled and flags and signs. It was a really prideful moment for me and in that moment I was so proud to be Hawaiian. Mahatma Gandhi. (2019, September 04). "From Agrarian to Impacts of Guns Germs & Steel"The Guns Germs & Steel presentation connects with the factors that are working together to create the issue of poverty and my groups UN Development goals. My groups UN Development goals are homelessness and sustainability. From the presentation I found that colonials believed that power was determined by race. Meaning they thought that white people were genetically superior to the New Guinea natives. This is also seen now in my group's empire, the Netherlands. The Netherlands might be tolerant but racism still exists for people of color. Making it harder for them to find jobs. This is also a big cause for poverty and homelessness.
An example of the issue here in Hawaii is homelessness This connects to the issue of homelessness because in Hawaii most of the people who are homeless are Hawaiians. I believe this is because it is hardest for these people to find jobs that pay enough for them to be able to live comfortably because of how high the cost of living is here in Hawaii. My group chose the study of the goal of sustainability and decreasing the number of homeless people in our empire and Hawaii. The revolution of agriculture and science affects sustainability because after things evolved when it came to agriculture things started to be packaged and shipped so more waste was made and more energy was needed to fuel machinery and transportation, causing it to pollute the air. Revolution in agriculture and science also affected homelessness because when things were made more efficient, more jobs were replaced. Making it harder for people to find work, leaving them unemployed and running up the homeless rate. The enlightenment age greatly affected sustainability because during the enlightenment age because during this age more and more things were being traded and marketed needing more fuel and packaging which is not sustainable.
Examples of the issue of sustainability are oil, gas, and coal. All of these things are made up of fossil fuels. These fossil fuels pollute the air. The issue presents itself because everyone around the world uses these unsustainable sources for power, packaging and transportation. You can see examples of this issue when you look at gross sewers full of waste and oil gunk, plastic in the ocean, and trash on the ground. The three types of pollution are air and water. Air pollution is when things like gases pollute the air. Water pollution is when water is polluted with trash and waterborne diseases. Compared to its fellow EU member states, the Netherlands comes in at an embarrassingly low 26th position in terms of the share of renewables in the energy mix. It is also known as one of the least sustainable European Countries. The biggest factor for them not being sustainable is because they donʻt use renewable energy. When it comes to Hawaii, I feel that most of the factors that create the issue of poverty that correlates to our goal is because of missionaries and the European lifestyle that was forced upon Native Hawaiians. Now Hawaii is reliant on shipments of goods from out of state and out of country to provide for the people of Hawaii. Hawaii is not able to stand on itʻs own because of how reliant we have become on outer sources.
