Colonization affected our Kahiau project in kinda a bad way. Before colonization Hawai'i has had national sovereignty. Hawaiians were a people of self sustainability. Prior to western contact the native Hawaiians economy was doing just fine. After contact with the Western foreigners it brought western diseases killing off most of Hawai'i's population. This was not only a tremendous decline in culture it also brought a decline to Hawaii's economy and a bad economy directly affects poverty. Then the overthrow happened kinda forcing upon Hawai'i that it's main economy would be based on the sole thing of tourism . This causes a lot of problems especially in todays modern world especially with the covid-19 pandemic. Because people couldn't travel , thats most of Hawai'i's economy gone already. Then people started losing jobs and then there becomes an increase in poverty. Croix, S. L. (n.d.). Economic History of Hawai'i. Retrieved from https://eh.net/encyclopedia/economic-history-of-hawaii/ Through the eyes of the westerners imperialism doesn't seem that bad and might seem okay to some. Yet imperialism has affected the hawaiian culture tremendously. For example while the kingdom of Hawai'i was being overthrown, the hawaiian language was banned and wasn't allowed to be spoken without punishment. This gave the hawaiian culture a loss in language, in fact it wasn't even until 1978 where Hawaiian was re-established as an official language of the state of Hawaii and, in 1990, the federal Government of the United States adopted a policy to recognize the right of Hawaii to preserve, use, and support its indigenous language. This cause almost lost the Hawaiian language. Showing imperialism affects native hawaiians till this day on reviving our culture. Hawaiian Language. (n.d.). Alternative Hawaii.
