Today in Modern America and Hawai’i, yes, we are still in a time of racial discrimination and idendity crisis. People are discriminated against for their skin color every day and the effects of course are negative. On February 4, 1999, Amadou Diallo, immigrant of Guinea was killed by four New York Police Officers because of suspicious activity and being mistakenly suspected of rape a year before. Discrimination shows up in todayʻs society as Implicit Bias, referring to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our behavior, understadning, actions and decisions in an inconscious manner. Race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, etc. could mean the difference in getting hired for a job or being shot to death like Amadou Diallo. In todayʻ world, we can see examples of Prejudice, the unjustified and negative attitude toward an individual group which can not only be due to hatred, but also because of accurate stereotypes.
After the ending of World War 2, the military returned to their families and that was pretty hard on the economy. The unity of the Hawaiian citizens was what enabled them to recover the island beautifully. Hawai’i was the ultimate target for military stations and bases when Japan was trying to expand its empire throughout the Pacific and they had technology and strategies to set out and achieve that.
