Art is able to showcase and highlight social concerns in both history and modern society because of the messages behind them. They can be shown through paintings, drawings, sculptures, books, poems, posters and more. Art is a way for us to express our thoughts and feelings towards issues and things that are important to us. Art influences modern society by changing opinions, instilling values and translating experiences across different kinds of people. Art is communication. It allows people from different cultures and different places to communicate with each other via images, sounds and stories. Socially engaged art can ignite outrage and demands for change, provide a platform for reflection, collaboration, and building community. Art history allows us to look back and understand how our civilization evolved over the centuries. It is a way to know ourselves better. What does your poem mean/discuss/reflect? My poem is about Inequality. During this session I was looking at this picture below of the unbalanced living, one with money, big housing, green vibrant grass and everything perfect. However, the side below with the broken and worn down houses with pretty much nothing is pretty sad. Inequality is unexpected and happens all the time. Like men and women incomes at their jobs, between people of different races, and more. I wanted my poem to represent what was going on in the image. I wanted to add the last line specifically of “You could change your future if given the chance” so that people can see the bigger picture of our Kahiau Project and how we are trying to help those that are suffering from poverty, homelessness and inequality. I hope this poem teaches them to not judge a book by its cover and to “Look further than an image, there's more than what appears” because sometimes people just happen to fall into these categories by chance and it’s very hard to recover without the help so it’s not in our interest to judge those without learning about their story first.
