Although there are many negatives to how colonization has impacted my Kahiau Project topic of poverty and homelessness. Some of the positive impacts were that Hawai’i gained many resources, the humanity in Hawaii was expanded as well and it gave Hawai’i more of an opportunity to be a part of a democracy and find a way to live new lifestyles. However, sometimes the negative side of things over sees the positive. In this case the negative impacted the Hawaiian people much more, upon taking control of the islands, the US not only harmed locals, but also the local environment. Taking our native lands and using it for selfish reasons was not okay with the Hawaiian and local people of the islands. Practice drills left the land deeply harmed and the growing population of military personnel depleted resources. This has an effect on my Kahiau Topic of poverty and homelessness in Hawai’i because by taking the land, it also takes away our home and a lot of homeless people are Hawaiians that are suffering due to the price of living and challenges they faced in their life. Homeless In Hawaii : Facts and Resources. (n.d.). https://ltgov.hawaii.gov/homeless-in-hawaii-facts-and-resources/. United Nations. (n.d.). Stressing That Fallout from Conflict, Colonialism Drives Homelessness,. https://www.un.org/press/en/2020/soc4887.doc.htm. Imperialism means the state of policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other areas. I think that this changed our understanding of these things as we look at it from a cultural perspective and are thinking they are actually helping us instead of hurting us. When the Hawaiian Kingdom was taken over we lost our independence. As it unwillingly became a United States territory, it gained a larger population of foreigners than Native Hawaiians. The United States secured military advantage, economic enrichment, and the first territory outside of its boundaries. While on the other hand, the native people of the land were suffering with their Queen locked up in her own home, lost of the language and culture because of selfish people. |
